Report: Lakers F Dorian Finney-Smith has ankle surgery
June 12 - Los Angeles Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith had surgery on his left ankle and is expected to be ready for fall training camp for next season, ESPN reported on Thursday. Finney-Smith, 32, has played through the lingering injury for several years, according to the report, and the surgery will make him pain-free. He missed eight games last season due to left ankle issues, per Lakers' injury reports, after sitting out 12 games with the Brooklyn Nets for a sprained left ankle and a left calf contusion which he had said was related to the ankle issue. Finney-Smith averaged 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 43 regular-season games (20 starts) with the Lakers, who acquired him from Brooklyn on Dec. 29, 2024. Los Angeles was 29-14 in games he played, including 14-6 as a starter, and qualified as the Western Conference's No. 3 seed in the playoffs. He averaged 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 20 games (all starts) with the Nets last season. For his career, Finney-Smith has averaged 8.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 28.0 minutes in 591 games (444 starts) for the Dallas Mavericks (2016-23), Nets (2023-24) and Lakers. Finney-Smith has a June 29 deadline to opt out of the final year of his contract, with a value of $15.4 million for next season. He has been eligible since mid-February to negotiate an extension before the beginning of free agency on June 30. --Field Level Media

Insider: Three free agents the Lakers seem likely to keep
Los Angeles Lakers fans are very focused on the players their favorite team could add this offseason, either through free agency or the trade market. But the Lakers will have a few of their current players become free agents this summer. There are a couple of them who they will need to retain in order to become a championship-caliber team next season. Advertisement Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report feels Dorian Finney-Smith, Jordan Goodwin and Jaxson Hayes, all of whom can or will be free agents this summer, are likely to stick around for at least one more year. Via Bleacher Report: "You can also pencil in Dorian Finney-Smith back at a figure close to his player option ($15.4 million)," Pincus wrote. "His relationship with [Luka] Dončić may make him a fixture with the franchise. "Assuming the Lakers retain Jordan Goodwin ($2.3 million team option), waive Shake Milton ($3 million non-guaranteed) and sign the 55th pick in June's draft to a minimum contract, their payroll will be $191.4 million with 12 players. That leaves them $16.5 million under the second apron (projected at $207.8 million) for any free agent acquisitions, with the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception as their primary spending tool. "L.A. also has Jaxson Hayes' early Bird rights, which allows them to pay him as much as $13.9 million as the starting salary on a new deal. That's higher than they'll budget for Hayes in a backup role, though." Finney-Smith helped start the Lakers' transformation into a team that has the ability to play excellent perimeter defense when he arrived in a late December trade. Losing him would be a sizable blow, as he makes a significant impact on the court that goes beyond his numbers. Goodwin was called up from the G League at midseason. The 6-foot-5 guard showed some promise by consistently hustling for rebounds and loose balls while displaying an improved 3-point shot. He averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 18.7 minutes while shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from 3-point range with Los Angeles during the regular season. Advertisement Hayes was the only true center the team had on a standard contract after sending out Anthony Davis in the trade that brought it Doncic. While he can't be counted on to play big minutes, especially in the playoffs, nor can he effectively guard standout centers or box out for rebounds, he's a decent depth option. Lakers 2024-25 season player grades: Jordan Goodwin
While the Feb. 1 trade that brought the Los Angeles Lakers Luka Dončić gave them a young generational superstar, it also made them a thinner team, especially in the backcourt, as it cost them emerging 3-and-D wing Max Christie. On Feb. 7, they called up Jordan Goodwin from the G League and signed him to a two-way contract. The 6-foot-5 guard quickly made a positive contribution and somewhat filled the hole that Christie's departure created. Advertisement While he isn't quite the player Christie was becoming, he has shown some promise as a player who can help out moving forward. Jordan Goodwin's season stats In 29 regular-season games, Goodwin averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 18.7 minutes a game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from 3-point range. In the first round of the NBA playoffs versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, he averaged 0.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 7.8 minutes a game while shooting 20% from the field. Overall analysis Goodwin isn't the most skilled player, but he displayed plenty of hustle, especially on the offensive boards. He also made a nice effort on the defensive end, and in doing so, he helped form a gritty second unit for the Lakers that included Dorian Finney-Smith, Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, all of whom brought hustle and defense. Advertisement Although he's not a high-volume 3-point shooter, he seemed to start developing into a reliable outside shooter as time went on. Goodwin will turn 27 years of age in late October, so while he's young, he also has some experience. He spent parts of three previous seasons with the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies, but he likely showed more with the Lakers than he did with his previous teams. Goodwin's contract situation Goodwin has a team option for next season. Bleacher Report insider Eric Pincus implied in a recent article that the Lakers are likely to keep him for next season, which would seem like a good idea. Advertisement The franchise has found diamonds in the rough as far as undrafted players such as Goodwin before, and he could be their next find, especially since they have reportedly established a player development system. With a reported wingspan of 6-foot-10, he should be able to become a serviceable player off the bench moving forward, including during the playoffs, as long as he puts in plenty of work.
