Decathlon to exit 5 GTA locations in Canada; shifts focus to online and smaller stores
French sporting goods retailer Decathlon will shut five of its Greater Toronto Area (GTA) outlets, the company confirmed in a release on their website on Wednesday.
Decathlon entered Ontario in 2019, expanded rapidly with stores across the GTA.
In its release, the company said it is 'evolving' and will 'reimagine' its retail operations in the region to match changing consumer preferences for both online and in-store shopping.
'The retail landscape is changing with consumers valuing variety across online and in-store formats. We are adapting our approach in key markets to deliver great value, quality gear and inspire more Canadians to enjoy the wonders of sport,' the online statement said.
The closures will affect locations in Brampton, Burlington, Scarborough, Vaughan and Markham, however the last day of operations is not specified yet.
The retail giant had seven stores across Ontario, primarily located in the Greater Toronto Area, with one branch in Ottawa. Recently, Decathlon shut down its outlet at Union Station, a bustling transit hub in Toronto.
ThThe company stated that it plans to retain its remaining 15 locations, which are mainly situated in Quebec.
After GTA shutdowns, customers in the Toronto area will be able to shop online, with the firm planning faster delivery through wholesale distribution and smaller format stores.

French MNC plans expansion in India by adding to hazardous waste treatment capacity

Courrieres (France): Veolia, a group that offers end-to-end hazardous waste solutions, announced that it was adding 5,30,000 tonnes of new hazardous waste annual treatment capacity by 2030 to respond to intensifying global demand and critical capacity shortages. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Veolia also said it planned to expand its business in India. The French MNC processes hazardous waste, often of industrial origin, including solvents, factory wastewater, batteries, fly ashes, soils contaminated by heavy metals, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or "forever chemicals". Chief executive officer Estelle Brachlianoff said, "Hazardous waste treatment is becoming a strategic bottleneck for many industries, especially those undergoing transformation or reshoring production. It's also an essential topic for human health and ensuring environmental security." Veolia is present in India in water and hazardous waste segments, and plans to develop hazardous waste activities, said Brachlianoff. "We are mainly present in Gujarat for hazardous waste management for industries and expanding our activities there." The group is also involved in crucial water services elsewhere in India, including water supply in Nagpur and wastewater treatment facilities on the outskirts of Delhi. Veolia's primary growth potential in India lies in the industrial sector, the CEO pointed out. "This waste needs to be managed to prevent it from polluting the rivers and harming the health of residents," she said. (The reporter is in Paris at the invitation of Veolia)

Canada revises post-study work permit courses for international students in 2025

Canada has revised the list of educational programs that qualify international students for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), aligning it with the country's labour market needs. The new list, released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on 25 June, adds 119 fields of study to the PGWP eligibility list and removes 178 existing to a report by CIC News, these changes affect international students enrolled in non-degree programs who apply for a study permit on or after 1 November 2024. Students who applied before 25 June 2025 are not affected and will remain eligible under the rules that existed at the time of their application. There are now 920 programs that qualify for PGWP. IRCC removed all transport-related programs and retained only one program under agriculture and agri-food. In contrast, new additions include fields linked to in-demand occupations in healthcare, education, and skilled trades. Among newly eligible programs are veterinary medicine, dentistry, cabinetmaking, and construction project management. Education programs such as biology teacher education and French language teacher education have also been added for the first the STEM category, programs in architecture and landscape design were added, while courses like environmental studies and marine resources management were removed. Trades such as solar energy and drywall installation lost IRCC's rationale, the update said the ineligible programs were removed because 'the occupations they are linked to are no longer experiencing labour shortages.'This change is closely aligned with Canada's Express Entry immigration categories, which were also revised earlier this year. Both systems now reflect a shared focus on addressing current labour market PGWP applicants must still meet language proficiency criteria. Non-university graduates must score CLB/NCLC level 5, while university graduates must meet level 7. Graduates from flight schools remain exempt from field-specific added PGWP-eligible courses comprise of: S.
