‘I'm not always dressing for the male gaze': Olivia Attwood Dack on how she's made glasses cool again

BreakingNews.ie19-07-2025
There was a time when wearing glasses – especially as a woman – was synonymous with awkwardness. A shorthand for geeky, uncool or – most misogynistic – unattractive.
But Olivia Attwood Dack has never been one to lean into stereotypes.

The reality TV star and presenter has long been associated with her bold eyewear choices and it's something she's become proud of.
'I think I am so known for my glasses, like I really bring glasses into my fashion,' she says, 'and I've done so since I was on Love Island. I mean, I was the first person to ever bring their glasses into Love Island.'
The reaction, at the time, was unsurprisingly mixed. 'Back in 2017 […] people found that wearing glasses was kind of like geeky or like, not cool,' but Attwood saw it differently. 'I've always been a very pro glasses wearer, a proud glasses wearer.'

She's been wearing prescription glasses and lenses since her early teens – but, like many, didn't always feel confident about them.

'I think when I was like 13 […] I'd have them in my school bag, and I'd be squinting at the board […] and then the teacher would be like, Olivia, you're squinting, put the glasses on.'
But that reluctance faded with age. 'As I got into my later teens […] I didn't love doing contact lenses,' she says, 'I always have really long nails. I do find them like a bit of a faff and I genuinely find glasses a really good way to express fashion.'

More than a practical choice, glasses have become part of her identity. 'They can be a statement if you want them to be. I think, for me, they've become a massive place of security,' she says. 'If I'm not feeling my best […] I feel like I can kind of hide behind glasses if I choose a chunkier frame.'
And Attwood Dack's collection is extensive.

'I think I probably have easily 20 pairs, but maybe more,' she laughs, 'I am an avid collector.'
She selects frames the way others choose shoes or jewellery: 'If I was wearing a predominantly black outfit, I might go for a tortoiseshell frame or a gold frame […] or I might use black on an outfit that's already quite busy.'

But her go-to pair is a black, chunky frame from Saint Laurent, 'they go with everything and they're robust,' she says. 'Having a large surface area with the lens as well gives you a lot more freedom than a slightly narrow lens.'
This is one of the pairs that she has included in her latest project: a style-led collaboration with Boots Opticians that showcases the range of designer frames they have on offer, from Attwood Dack's favourite Saint Laurent to Gucci and All Saints.

'I've got quite a small face, so technically, they probably wouldn't recommend a lot of the frames I have,' she says, 'but I enjoy the quirkiness and the aesthetic of an overpowering frame.'

Overpowering is a moniker Attwood Dack has long been associated with, following her debut on our screens back in the late 2010s. But what some dubbed 'overpowering', others deemed straightforward and outwardly spoken.
Throughout her career, Attwood Dack has borne the brunt of some appallingly sexist remarks – from the way she looks to her personality. But incredibly – and perhaps this is what owes to her long and ever-growing career – she has managed to stay put in her own beliefs and identity.
'I think glasses are a fashion statement now, and I think they can be sexy and they can be feminine as well as cool,' she says, 'I'm not always, you know, dressing for the male gaze.'

Her priorities – like those of many women – have evolved.
'When you're younger, it's something you're very focused on – does something make me look cool? Does it make me look, you know, attractive?' she reflects, 'and I think now it's like, as long as I feel good when I look in the mirror, I don't care.
'I want the girls to love it, the gays to love it.'

Despite her commitment to glasses as part of her style, she still finds resistance in unexpected places – like the glam team.
'The other night, I hosted an event for eBay, and I had to read from autocue and I was like, I need to wear my glasses,' she recalls, 'and [her make-up artists] were like, no, you're hiding our work. But actually I think that's not correct anyway, because that's the beauty of a bigger frame – that you do see all of the eye.'
And if the outdated assumption still exists that wearing glasses makes you look more serious or intelligent – 'I'm not against that,' Attwood Dack laughs, 'if it makes me look smarter – there's even better reason to wear them!'
It's clear that she thinks glasses are just as good an accessory as a bag or bracelet – even if they don't
necessarily
suit your face shape.
'Sometimes I like to lean into the fact that the frame is very big – or even too big – on my face,' she laughs.
'There is fun in leaning into a pair that isn't your style.'

Saturday's Lotto jackpot estimated at £7.3m after no ticket wins top prize

Saturday's lottery jackpot will be an estimated £7.3 million after no players won Wednesday's top prize. The winning Lotto numbers were 17, 31, 47, 05, 58 and 09, while the bonus number was 35. No players matched all six main numbers, meaning the jackpot was missed, while no ticket-holders won £1 million by matching five of the six numbers plus the bonus ball. Set of balls 3 and draw machine Lotto2 were used in the first Lotto draw since the National Lottery paused over the weekend to enable the biggest technology upgrade in the game's 31-year history. In Lotto HotPicks, which uses the same numbers as the Lotto draw, no players matched all five numbers to win the £350,000 top prize. Two ticket-holders won £13,000 each after matching four of the five numbers. The winning Thunderball numbers were 19, 02, 27, 03 and 38, and the Thunderball was 11. No ticket-holders won £500,000 by matching all five numbers plus the Thunderball. One player matched all five regular numbers, which earned them £5,000.

Destination X players thrown into chaos by next location – would you have got it from show clues?

Rob Brydon is the host of the new BBC show, which sees a group of strangers try to figure out where they are in Europe through a series of clues in a bid to win £100,000. The windows of the bus are usually blacked out so the group can't get a steer on where they are, but at one point tonight, they were given the chance to look out and saw a roundabout with large red balls in the middle. The first clue had them thoroughly perplexed, but once they boarded a luxury train, they received more. Split into two teams, they headed into their respective carriages and saw a postcard with Oscar-winning actress Audrey Hepburn, a ticket stub with 'Oktober' written on it and a slip of paper with the word 'Dienstabteil' printed. Another postcard featured a print which player Saskia asked: "Do we think these are roads or vines or like a forest maybe?" Meanwhile a book had a stamp from the Bavarian State Library. The two teams then went head-to-head in a challenge onboard the train, with the winning group receiving the chance to go into a glass sided carriage to discover more clues. The team that won consisted of Josh, Judith and Saskia, and when they reached the carriage they saw they were moving through a forest. The train slowed down for them to see a number of new clues, which included a sign reading 'Donau' and a group of naturists eating large sausages and drinking from big glass beer steins. Meanwhile in the carriage, there was a football magazine with Harry Kane on the front which read 'Harry Kane strikes again' . Fans stunned as THREE Destination X contestants are immediately axed in brutal opening twist The clues all lead to Germany, and the winning team were convinced it was Munich, but decided to throw some red herrings into the mix when they returned to the others, and suggest what they had seen was pointing to Dortmund. But what did you think? The episode featured a brutal twist which saw the three players who failed to make it onto the bus in episode one return in a bid to try and win a spot on board. LOSING GAME After a series of head-to-heads with Ben, James and Nick from the losing team, James was sent home there and then. The remaining players then entered their guesses for Destination X into the computer, before Rob revealed the results. It turned out Ben had been furthest from the actual location and would be leaving too. And if you had guessed Munich, you were correct! Well done! Destination X continues tomorrow night at 9pm on BBC One. 5 England footballer Harry Kane featured among the clues Credit: BBC 5 Contestants analysed ticket stubs to try and figure out the location Credit: BBC

Strictly Come Dancing favourite will NOT have a celebrity partner this year as they are tempted away by new gig

Gorka Marquez has pulled out of being partnered with a celebrity on the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing. The professional dancer, 34, will be missing from the BBC show for three weeks this year to work as a judge on the Spanish version Bailando Con Las Estrellas. His judging commitments means he can't have a professional partner on the new series and will be instead part of the ensemble dancers. According to The Sun, Gorka will appear as part of the ensemble for the first seven weeks and then will be gone for a month before returning in week 11. A source said: 'Strictly bosses were desperate to keep Gorka so have made it work around his schedule to make sure he's as involved as possible because he's such a fan favourite.' Gorka took to Instagram to confirm he would be a judge on the Spanish version of Strictly. He wrote: 'I am happy to announce that I will be back for season two of BAILANDO CON LAS ESTRELLAS as a judge from September. 'Due to the filming dates this means that I won't be competing with a partner this year in Strictly but I will be a part of lots of the group numbers and will be back for final weeks of the Show to support the rest of my fellow pros and their celebrities in what is going to be an AMAZING SERIES. 'As always thank you for all The love and supportand remember!' It comes after Strictly unveiled two new pros who are joining the lineup ahead of the much-anticipated new series this autumn. Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon will shimmy onto screens alongside a slew of much-loved pros later this year, with both already familiar to the show, having performed on the show's international versions, Dancing With The Stars. American-born Alexis Warr, 25, is best known for winning US dance series So You Think You Can Dance in 2022 and was crowned as 'America's Favourite Dancer', becoming the first female Ballroom and Latin dancer to claim the title. She has performed as a guest Professional Dancer and in the dance troupe on the US version of Strictly, Dancing With The Stars, and has been part of the series' accompanying US tour for the past three years. As well as appearing on America's Got Talent, World of Dance, and on national tours across the States, Alexis has also joined Dancing With The Stars judge Derek Hough for three tours, in addition to his Las Vegas residency. Prior to the announcement, Alexis hinted that she could be joining the Strictly pros in the new lineup, as she shared a video ahead of her flight to the UK over the weekend. The fiery redhead has been married to dentist Jake Burton for six years, and regularly shares sweet snaps with her spouse on Instagram. Speaking about joining the show, Alexis said: 'I've admired Strictly for years, so joining this incredible family is such an honour. 'I can't wait to step into the ballroom, pour my heart into every moment, and share my love of dance with the UK.' Australian-born Julian has been dancing since the age of 10, specialising in Ballroom and Latin American, and going onto represent Australia on the international stage. He appeared as a Professional Dancer on three seasons of Australia's Dancing With The Stars, has toured the globe with hit dance show Burn The Floor, and also competed on So You Think You Can Dance in Australia. Julian has a degree in Exercise Physiology from UNSW Sydney and, alongside his dance career, has worked as a Personal Trainer and Exercise Physiologist. Back in December, Julian announced his engagement to his girlfriend Sofia, posting a sweet video of their beachside proposal on Instagram. He said: 'Joining the cast of Strictly really is a dream come true. I've watched it for years, especially cheering on all the amazing dancers I know and work with who've been part of it. I can't wait to get stuck in, have some fun, and be part of something special! '
