
Andaman & Nicobar Police Officers honoured with National Awards on Independence Day
The awards were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
HGS Dhaliwal, IPS (AGMUT 1997), currently serving as Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Known for his operational expertise in anti-terror and organised crime cases, Dhaliwal has led several high-profile investigations, including the Soumya Vishwanathan, Radhika Tanwar, and Jigisha Ghosh murder cases, the Delhi serial blasts case, and operations against Indian Mujahideen, LeT, and ISKP. He also supervised the arrest of Rajwinder Singh, wanted in Australia in the Toyah Cordingley case, and coordinated with international agencies such as the FBI and Interpol in transnational operations. As DGP, he led an investigation into the seizure of the largest quantity of methamphetamine in the islands.
Sub-Inspector V Satyawati, who joined the force in 1992 and was promoted in 2016, received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. She was recognised for her integrity and dedication, notably completing the investigation of a high-profile POCSO case in just 18 days, resulting in a conviction.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Mahali Urong of the India Reserve Battalion, who joined in 2002, was also awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. He has been commended for his role in anti-poaching operations in the dense island forests, where he helped apprehend several offenders.
Home Guard B.C. Naskar, who has served since 1994, received the Home Guard Medal for Meritorious Service for over three decades of service, including work in law and order duties, VIP movements, and disaster response during the earthquake and tsunami.
The Andaman & Nicobar Police described the awards as a proud moment for the force and a recognition of the officers' dedication and service to public safety.

One charred to death, three feared dead in fire at Bengaluru market
Bengaluru: One person was charred to death and three others were feared dead in Nagarthpet, located close to the busy K.R. Market in Bengaluru, on Saturday. The victims were residing in a house on the fourth floor of a commercial building. According to police, the fire erupted suddenly inside the residence and engulfed the entire house within minutes. The exact cause of the tragedy is yet to be ascertained. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire first broke out in a plastic mat shop and then spread to the entire floor. The deceased has been identified as Madan Singh from Rajasthan. His wife and two children, aged 8 and 5 years, are also feared dead. About 18 fire tenders have been deployed to extinguish the blaze. However, due to the narrow lanes, personnel and vehicles of the Fire and Emergency Services Department faced difficulties in reaching the spot. Three ambulances have also been rushed to the area. More details are awaited as rescue operations are still underway. Former MLA and local Congress leader R.V. Devaraju, who arrived at the spot, stated that it is suspected one person has died and three others are feared dead. An official statement in this regard is awaited from the Police Department. On Friday, a boy was killed and nine others were injured in an explosion in Bengaluru. The incident caused panic among residents and authorities, as people were busy with the 79th Independence Day celebrations. The deceased was identified as eight-year-old Mubarak. According to police, 12 others, including an eight-year-old girl, sustained injuries and have been admitted to various hospitals. Authorities suspect a gas cylinder blast, although locals claim the impact was much stronger than a typical LPG cylinder explosion. Police are continuing their investigation. On October 7, 2023, in a major tragic incident, at least 13 persons were burnt alive and four others were injured in the cracker shop cum godown fire incident that was reported from Attibele in Anekal Taluk on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

State to become world's ‘Capital of Innovation': CM
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said Karnataka is already India's IT capital, and it is now stepping forward to become the world's 'Capital of Innovation'. He said Karnataka ranks second nationally in attracting foreign direct investment, and remains among the nation's leading industrial states. The Chief Minister said this while delivering his address at the 79th Independence Day celebrations here. 'Our government has never lagged in prioritising industrial growth. To manage and develop the state's largest industrial regions into global manufacturing hubs with world-class infrastructure, 18 industrial areas covering 44,166 acres have been declared Special Investment Regions. Alongside, we continue to encourage small industries,' Siddaramaiah said. He said, investors have expressed interest in bringing in over Rs 10 lakh crore in investments. Out of this, 48 per cent has already been processed under Single Window IT Platform. Karnataka remains among the nation's leading industrial states, with the manufacturing sector contributing 23.6 per cent to the state's GSDP, and the state ranks second nationally in attracting foreign direct investment, he said. 'A new Tourism Policy has been implemented to boost tourism in the state by developing world-class infrastructure and fostering entrepreneurship in the sector.' Noting that the government has rolled out multiple programmes for the welfare of labourers, particularly in the unorganised sector, the CM said, 'We will be soon implementing the Karnataka Labour Policy to ensure job security.' The state has made significant achievements in the services sector, which contributes 66.7 per cent to our GSDP, he said, 'We are not only safeguarding the interests of all workers engaged in this sector, but enacting 'Platform-Based Gig Workers Bill' for the welfare of over five lakh gig workers.' Under this Bill, the government is introducing an insurance scheme providing coverage of up to Rs 4 lakh for these workers, he added. The government is undertaking various initiatives for job creation, Siddaramaiah said and added that at Invest Karnataka-2025 (Global Investors Meet), held in February 2025, a total of 3,250 entrepreneurs participated. 'We signed agreements with 98 companies for investment of Rs 6,23,970 crore, and 1,101 companies have obtained necessary approvals for investments worth Rs 4,03,533 crore. These initiatives are expected to generate over 6 lakh jobs,' he said. In 2023-24, Karnataka attracted Rs 54,427 crore in foreign investment, ranking third in the country, Siddarmaiah said. 'In 2024-25, we have attracted Rs 56,030 crore, moving up to second place nationally,' he added. Stating that Karnataka is at the forefront in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and biotechnology, Siddaramaiah said the country's first quantum computer is in Karnataka. 'Our Karnataka Quantum Mission will shape the future of science.' 'We are not merely creating jobs. We are creating ideas, inventions, and innovations that change lives. These ideas are reaching far beyond our borders,' he added.

State-specific education policy soon: CM
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said steps are being taken by the state government to frame a comprehensive 'Karnataka-specific' education policy which will lead to holistic development of the youth. A commission constituted for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education and that Kannada or the mother tongue be the medium of instruction up to Class 5. In his address during the 79th Independence Day celebrations here, the chief minister also said the government was upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics in the state, and establishing 13 new technical education institutions. 'Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth,' Siddaramaiah said. The Commission had submitted its report to Siddaramaiah on August 8. It was constituted in October 2023 following the Congress' poll promise to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) of the BJP-led Centre. This year, the government is setting up 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, Siddaramaiah said.
