
Generating warmth for unloved Curragh may prove hardest part of racecourse revamp
It is 25 years since
the late Aga Khan
told an audience he was tired of parking his keister in unsatisfactory surroundings at the Curragh racecourse.
He put it rather more eloquently than that, declaring himself 'an articulate sufferer at racecourses that do not meet acceptable standards of efficiency, convenience, practicality and comfort'.
Instead of just moaning, he did something about it. It can be argued that a vastly wealthy royal could afford to put his money where his mouth was. But even so, ponying up a reported €15 million to buy the hotel at the back of the old Curragh stands so it could be knocked down, therefore freeing up space for redevelopment, spoke of a man tired of roughing it.
It is 10 years since plans for the revamped Curragh that we know today were first revealed.

(HRI), Joe Keeling, described it as the 'most important venture in the modern history of Irish racing'.

The original budget was for €65 million and it was to be finished by 2018. By the end of the tender process, it was €72.3 million. Unforeseen delays – or cock-ups – included having to redo the parade ring for an extra €500,000.
So, in 2019, the revamped Curragh was officially opened, a year late. The final cost was €81.5 million, €36.5 million of which was public money through HRI. The impressive new stand was named, appropriately, after the Aga Khan.
There were teething problems, such as the embarrassing whistling sound the new stand roof made when the wind blew in a certain direction. There was also the departure of Curragh chief executive Derek McGrath over lack of unity, as he saw it, on a shared vision for the racecourse. The biggest challenge of all was the Covid pandemic.
The push for redevelopment was driven by an elitist vibe
A lot of water and money has been passed since the Aga Khan decided to set the ball rolling. Ultimately, however, the aim of delivering a flagship, luxury facility for racing's great and good has been achieved.
It is a modern facility, which, by most measures, is lovely to look at. It is also, by most measures, predominantly unloved.
Pinning emotions to locations is an illogical exercise, but that doesn't prevent lots of people from doing so anyway.
There are those in south Dublin who don't know the back end of a horse from the front end of a BMW 7 Series, but whose annual Christmas pilgrimage to Leopardstown is as important a festive ritual as fighting with the in-laws.

Just a few weeks ago, a record attendance of 42,138 crammed into the Punchestown Festival's Friday card. It was frantic, raucous and felt like much of Kildare was on the razz on their own doorstep.
Different racecourses have their own identity. Galway is as much part of the Irish summer as rain. Smaller tracks like Ballinrobe and Kilbeggan exert a local pull that puts higher-profile courses to shame. Laytown has sand. Gowran has mud. But to too many people, the Curragh suggests exclusivity.
That's partly to do with the nature of the racing and having all the classics, as well as most of Ireland's group one races. But it's not just that.

The push for redevelopment was driven by an elitist vibe. Rather than failure to pinpoint any shared vision, the concept was essentially to put the best side out and impress international neighbours by transforming a down-at-heel venue into a place the rich are happy to play in. In that sense it has succeeded. But it patently lacks a sense of popular engagement.
The three-day Guineas festival begins there on Friday. The first classics of 2025 will be run over the weekend. So will the Tattersalls Gold Cup. It is flat racing at its finest.
Last year, there was an official attendance of just over 14,000 over the three days. Only 5,000 showed up for the 1,000 Guineas. The Curragh's biggest day is the Derby, which last year drew an attendance of 11,418. The other big date, its leg of the Champions Festival, saw 8,645 pass through the turnstiles. The grandstand's capacity alone is 13,000.
Such figures illustrate that the overriding response to the Curragh's revamp has been indifference.
The argument can be made in racing terms that exclusivity is what the Curragh is supposed to be about. The private money behind the redevelopment can certainly afford not to worry about empty seats.
But since almost half the cost has been picked up by the taxpayer, such a position smacks of complacency. And, rightly or wrongly, an unfortunate 'them and us' attitude has arisen that will be hard to shift.
Maybe in time, indifference will turn to enthusiasm. Back in the day, even the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, a modern architectural masterpiece, got flak for being a colossal waste of public money. The secret to being liked is often to just hang around long enough.
Generating warmth for the Curragh, however, might turn out to be the final and most difficult part of its revamp.

Robert Pether's wife hopes his release from Iraqi prison will end ‘living nightmare'
An Irish resident who has been in jail in Iraq for the last four years is 'unrecognisable', his wife, Desree Pether, has said. Robert Pether, originally from Australia, was released on bail on Thursday. He was arrested in April 2021 along with an Egyptian colleague Khalid Radwan on suspicion of theft. Mr Pether has been held in a cell with 20 other prisoners. The United Nations says it has been an arbitrary detention. The arrest arose out of a contract dispute. Mr Pether was an engineer working for the Dubai-based engineering firm CME Consulting on rebuilding Iraq's Central Bank headquarters in Baghdad. The couple bought a former convent in Elphin, Co Roscommon, five years ago with a view to turning into a herbal therapy centre. She is an Irish citizen through her Dublin-born father. Last night she saw him for the first time in four years on video and it was a 'shock'. 'I was very happy to see him – but also to see the state of him, he was completely unrecognisable'. Dramatic spike in ‘safe account' scams flagged by Bank of Ireland
Bank of Ireland has recorded a 10-fold increase in attempted 'safe account' scams this week. Criminals have been contacting potential victims and luring them into calling a fake bank phoneline where they can be duped into transferring funds to a secondary account – in most cases Revolut – and in turn to a safe account, controlled by the fraudster. Reports of the scam to Bank of Ireland's fraud line and Text Checker service have been on the increase since the start of the year. This week has seen daily reports over 10 times the number of those made weekly in April and May. READ MORE 'We have been seeing a concerning pattern in the increase of this type of fraud,' said Bank of Ireland's head of fraud Nicola Sadlier. 'This week's escalation has resulted in the highest number of reports in a single day of this particular type of fraud, so we need our customers and the general public to be vigilant and recognise the warning signs.' She said the main advice is to 'look out for these texts and do not call back. And remember that Bank of Ireland will never ask you to move your money to another account to keep it safe.' Typically the scam starts with the customer getting a text message asking them to call a phone number about a suspicious transaction or activity. Such messages can drop into the thread of a genuine BOI text. Questions posed can be a variant of 'Did you login from a new device?'; 'Do you recognise this transaction?'; or 'A transaction for [value] to [merchant] was declined and your card has been placed on hold' – followed by 'if this was not you / if you don't recognise this / etc please call us back on a given number. The callback number will be answered by someone claiming to be from Bank of Ireland, highlighting suspicious transactions and claiming the customer's account is compromised. The victim is then asked if they have a Revolut / or other secondary account. If they say yes, they are told that they should move all the money from their BOI account into their own Revolut account, or secondary account. The fraudster does not ask for access to the customer's account, and does not ask for any security details like pin numbers or codes – avoiding common red flags associated with fraud. The victim is then told they need to move their money from their Revolut account to a new 'safe' account, after which it disappears for good.

Co-founder of Swedish internet security company named EY World Entrepreneur of the Year
Stina Ehrensvärd, co-founder of Swedish internet security company Yubico, has been named EY World Entrepreneur of the Year 2025 at an award ceremony in Monaco's Salle des Etoiles. Ms Ehrensvärd was selected from almost 5,000 participants that included 52 winners across 43 countries and jurisdictions competing for the global title. She is the fourth woman to hold the title and first winner from Sweden in the award's 25-year history. EY Ireland Entrepreneurs of the Year 2024 Sharon Cunningham and Orlaith Ryan of Shorla Oncology represented Ireland at the event. She further created 'exponential growth for her company and a lasting impact on Sweden and its people'. Yubico was cofounded by Ms Ehrensvärd in 2007. Over the following five years, it secured work with three of the biggest technology companies in Silicon Valley. Since then, Ms Ehrensvärd has scaled Yubico to where it now protects 19 of the world's 20 largest internet companies. Its compound annual growth rate has been 40 per cent since 2020. EY chief executive Janet Truncale said Ms Ehrensvärd's 'defining philosophy that a secure digital identity is a basic human right is exactly the type of purpose-driven leadership we look to celebrate'. Ms Ehrensvärd said she was 'committed to saving the internet for democracy, for free speech, for education, for all the beautiful things we can do with it'. 'This recognition isn't the finish line,' she said. 'It's fuel. We are building a safer digital world, and I won't stop until that mission is fulfilled.' The winner was chosen by an independent panel of judges against four criteria: entrepreneurial spirit, purpose, growth and impact.
