Ruben Selles endures miserable start at Sheff Utd with heavy Bristol City defeat

Rhyl Journal10-08-2025
The Spaniard was appointed into the Bramall Lane hotseat following the surprise sacking of Chris Wilder after the Blades' play-off final defeat, but his stint could not have begun any worse.
Scott Twine's double and goals from Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti ensured Gerhard Struber's first game in charge of the Robins was a much more enjoyable affair.
Tyrese Campbell had levelled for the Blades but this performance will raise big questions about their promotion credentials this term.
City were back at Bramall Lane, where they left crestfallen after their play-off semi-final defeat in May, but the emotions were entirely different.
It was just 89 days ago that the Blades spanked the Robins to book their place at Wembley with a 6-0 semi-final aggregate win, but they found life much tougher this time.
They fell behind in the fifth minute as Twine converted a trademark free-kick, whipping a 25-yard effort over the wall which left Blades goalkeeper Michael Cooper rooted to the floor.
It was almost 2-0 soon after as Twine danced through the Blades defence and looked primed to score until Femi Seriki made a vital block.
That proved important as the Blades were level in the 14th minute when they scored an excellent equaliser.
Callum O'Hare threaded an incisive pass through to Campbell, who thrashed home from 12 yards.
The Blades had their tails up and could easily have gone in front but Louis Barry had an effort deflected just wide, City defender Jason Knight almost scored an own goal and Harrison Burrows' drilled effort was beaten away by Radek Vitek.
But, in a game where neither defence looked solid, it was City that regained the lead in the 26th minute.
Twine received the ball in the middle and found McCrorie, who drilled into the bottom corner.
Things got even better after the break as they extended their lead just 36 seconds into the second half when Emil Jakobsen got in down the right and teed up Mehmeti to sweep home.
It was 4-1 in the 51st minute after Rhys Norrington-Davies' pass was intercepted by McCrorie and he passed to Twine, whose effort deflected off Tyler Bindon and into the net.
Jakobsen should have made it five but he blazed over from close range when a loose ball fell to him.
Tom Cannon and Sydie Peck were both denied as the Blades tried to reduce their arrears but they were booed by an unforgiving home crowd.

Man City make Rico Lewis transfer decision after fresh Pep Guardiola talks

Rico Lewis had been offered a transfer to Nottingham Forest in the summer window and has now made up his mind after speaking to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola Rico Lewis is set to snub Nottingham Forest and sign a new contract with Manchester City. Forest had made an official approach to City for the versatile defender last week, but he has now decided to stay put. ‌ The 20-year-old defender came through the City academy and has made 95 appearances for the club. He has been nurtured by Pep Guardiola, who has fielded him in a variety of positions, and played 44 times last season. ‌ Forest tried to tempt the full-back by offering to double his wages at the City Ground after signing his team-mate James McAtee for £25million. But Lewis said he was happy at City after playing in the 4-0 win over Wolves on the weekend and The Daily Mail reports that he will pen fresh terms with the club. ‌ Lewis will sign a new five-year deal to increase his wages and commit to a further two years. His decision was foreshadowed by Guardiola, who spoke to his defender after Forest's approach and said he was confident of keeping him after opening the campaign with a thumping win at Molineux. 'I think he is going to stay. I think,' he said. 'He told me that. But maybe tomorrow it changes. 'For example, for the case with Phil [Foden], for Rico, for Nico O'Reilly, I have special sympathy because they were 16 or 17 years old when they arrived here and we were winning Premier Leagues. In his role he is an extraordinary player. 'But he is so small. If he was taller we'd say, 'oh what a player'. Today, I think he is going to stay but I don't know what is going to happen.' Forest's interest came after talks with City over a new deal stalled and he was left out of the squad for the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace at the end of last season, but he made it clear after the Wolves game that he never really considered leaving. 'For me, I've never, ever seen myself at a different club,' Lewis said. ‌ 'I've always wanted to play for City. It's my dream club, and like you see today, when I'm playing with the kind of players that I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy. 'Everyone wants assurance and security, but at the end of the day, it's on me. It's on me to perform. It's on me to take the chances. If I take my own chances, I do it. If I don't, then I have to work and get better. 'Last season I played more than the season before, this season I want to play more than last season, so it's always the same goal, becoming an established player.' City have not signed a right-back in the summer transfer window and Lewis started there against Wolves before being replaced by Matheus Nunes. 'We're fortunate Nunez injury wasn't more serious'

Marcelino Nunez is set to miss several weeks with an ankle injury sustained in the win at Portsmouth, according to Norwich City boss Liam ahead of the Canaries' home game with Middlesbrough on Saturday (15:00 BST), Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk: "We're probably fortunate it wasn't more serious."It was a bit of a nasty one, but fortunately we are talking a few weeks rather than months."It's disappointing because he did extremely well in the Watford game, and I thought he was excellent in the first half against Portsmouth."We're disappointed to lose him, but with the games coming up and then the international break, hopefully we'll see him not long after that."Other topics covered by Manning in his press conference included: "Kenny McLean is back in training. Lucien Mahovo and Gabriel Forsyth are progressing – we're moving in the right direction in terms of getting bodies back.""Josh Sargent has been excellent. He leads, he's stepped up in the changing room. He's in a really good spot.""It's difficult for players with the noise [around transfers] and the pressure, but I can't speak highly enough of Sargent. He's played every pre-season game - not missed a session.""We've got loads to work on. We're trying to pick up results while evolving. It was a strong learning week for us.""We want to turn Carrow Road into a really tough place to come.""Middlesbrough have started well. They didn't have a huge overhaul in the summer. They have some talented players.""There's a lot to be excited about here. It's important to enjoy the journey.""We've got good physicality now. We have to make sure we maximise it."Click here to listen to Liam Manning's full pre-match interview via BBC Sounds.

Alcaraz arrives in New York red-hot and ready to reclaim top ranking

BENGALURU, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Carlos Alcaraz heads to the U.S. Open in his now-familiar role as chief challenger to defending champion Jannik Sinner and the Spaniard will be driven this year by the twin pursuit of Grand Slam glory and the world number one ranking. The 22-year-old won a tour-leading sixth title of the season in Cincinnati on Monday after Sinner retired from the final with illness while trailing 0-5 in the opening set and the result has turned up the heat in the rankings race ahead of the season's final major. Health permitting, all signs point to the duo meeting again in a major final and completing a season-defining trilogy after Alcaraz beat Sinner in an epic five-setter to retain his French Open trophy in June before surrendering his Wimbledon crown to the top-ranked Italian last month. Although Alcaraz has excelled on grass and clay, hardcourt consistency has eluded him on the grandest stage following his 2022 U.S. Open triumph, but the five-times major champion is approaching the New York showpiece starting on Sunday with renewed belief. "I'm feeling a lot of confidence, playing on a different surface," said Alcaraz, whose U.S. Open triumph three years ago ensured that he became the youngest world number one since the inception of the ATP rankings in 1973. "New York is a place that I love playing in. It's where I got my first Grand Slam and I appreciate the love and support that I receive there every year that I go." Having won five of the last seven events he has played in, the red-hot Alcaraz can reclaim the top ranking at the end of the U.S. Open fortnight by outperforming Sinner, who will be defending 2,000 points as the champion. A shock second-round defeat by Dutch outsider Botic van de Zandschulp last year means Alcaraz will defend 50 points but the Spaniard is determined to avoid another early defeat in his bid to split the majors with Sinner for a second straight year. "It was disappointing, the level that I played there," Alcaraz said of his 2024 campaign. "So this year, I really want to show good tennis, my best tennis, and try to go as far as I can, enjoy as much as I can the love there. We'll see how it's going to be." The Cincinnati champion has gone on to capture the U.S. Open trophy in the previous two years, with Novak Djokovic prevailing in 2023 before Sinner's success last time, and a philosophical Alcaraz is hoping to keep that run going. "I'm accepting everything that's happening to me and trying to learn to be a better person and player from the experiences that I'm living in the last three to four months," he said on the Tennis Channel. "I'm doing great things that I'm really proud of, so I'm going to try and do the same things in New York."
