Peaky Blinders auction of original costumes raises £19k for cancer charity
An auction of original costumes from BBC TV series Peaky Blinders, including a suit worn by actor Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in the show's final scenes, has raised £19,000 for charity.
The 48-year-old Irish actor wore the period-style grey three-piece suit in the final episode of the sixth series.
The suit, which came with a handwritten note on a piece of script found in a pocket which says: 'takes off ring', sold for £1,650.
The highest price of £3,000 was fetched by a three-piece woollen suit, also worn by Murphy as Tommy Shelby, which comes with a label reading 'Tommy suit C'.
A hat worn by Sam Claflin, who played fascist MP Oswald Mosley during series five and six, sold for £180, and a coat worn by the late Helen McCrory as Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in episode four of series three sold for £650.
Other auctioned costumes and accessories included Tommy Shelby's wedding suit in episode one of the third season, which sold for £1,600, an embroidered jacket worn by Aimee Ffion Edwards as Esme Shelby in season six, sold for £240, as well as hats, dresses, ties, and shoes from the hit show.
The Omega Auctions sale ran for four weeks from April 22.
It concluded on May 20 with a themed event held at the Peaky Blinders bar on Peter Street in Manchester, featuring costume displays and live bidding.
All proceeds from the auction have gone to The Christie Charity, which supports cancer patients and research at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester.
Oscar-winner Murphy is set to reprise his role as Birmingham gangster Shelby in a film set after the final season of the show, which ran from 2013 to 2022.
Across six series, Peaky Blinders tackled the rise of fascism, Irish republican politics, and communist activities through the period following the First World War, along with Shelby's political ambitions.

Some sorts of books and dramas have very strict rules. We like a lot of things to be absolutely predictable. In romantic comedies, a girl chooses between a charmer who turns out to be a rotter and another man she hates at first but then falls for. In the BBC's long-running Casualty, if a worried patient turns up with his put-upon wife who coughs twice, it's the wife who's got an undiagnosed fatal disease. Bertie Wooster falls for a girl that Jeeves doesn't care for and the valet goes to some lengths to detach his employer. We like these things because they're safe and a little bit cosy and we all know what the rules are. One of the most rigid genres at the moment is slightly different. Even though it's got a set of incredibly strict rules, it's regarded by its adherents, not as an exercise within conventional boundaries, like an episode of Midsomer Murders, but as a radical demonstration of rule-breaking. I'm talking about the experimental novel. After a while, the sceptical reader has to ask: if the same rule is being broken in exactly the same way, novel after novel, at what point does that turn into a new and very strict rule? Earlier this year, the Irish-British novelist Eimear McBride published a new novel, The City Changes Its Face. I single her out but, to be honest, there is no shortage of other exemplars. It was greeted with rapture by book reviewers. The Guardian observed with awe that 'she uses verbs as nouns, nouns as adjectives'. This magazine's reviewer wrote: 'To say that it is 'experimental' doesn't do justice to its flexibility and force.

Doctor Who star breaks silence on exit after taking time to 'process'
Doctor Who aired its latest season finale on Saturday night, in which the likes of Ncuti Gatwa, Varada Sethu and Millie Gibson appeared to bid farewell to the BBC show Cast member Varada Sethu has now broken her silence following the season finale of Doctor Who on the weekend. The episode, which featured the departure of her co-star Ncuti Gatwa, is thought to mark her exit from the show. Varada, 33, played companion Belinda Chandra in the latest season of the BBC show. The character made her debut in the first episode, which aired in April, and then bid farewell to the Doctor - played by Ncuti, 32 - in Saturday's finale. The actor has since addressed her apparent departure from Doctor Who in a lengthy post shared on Instagram today. Varada wrote about her experience as a cast member alongside various photos, including several of her and Ncuti. She wrote in the caption: "Wow wow wow wow wow. I'm sooo late to the party (as always), but needed to take a few days to process this show, this finale and everything & everyone it has brought into my life, what it all means. "My heart has doubled in size. I have felt so so full of gratitude and love, I still feel I haven't found the words to express it. It has been a true gift to know a woman like Belinda, I will never forget our journey together." Praising her co-stars, she continued by writing: "Thank you [Ncuti] for being my partner in crime, my beloved Doctor. You are unending, pure magic, what a privilege it's been to bear witness to it. Mom & Dad forever. My sweet angel [ Millie Gibson ], thank you for your kindness, for always lifting me up, you have stolen everyone's hearts!! I cannot wait to see what life has in store for you." Varada then expressed gratitude for some colleagues who worked behind-the-scenes. She wrote: "For teaching me and showing me love & support like I've never known before." She added in the post this week: "Thank you to every beautiful soul involved in this madness." She concluded: "And of course to the beautiful fans, thank you soooo much for embracing Belinda, for all the kind words, all the joy! I think I finally understand what you meant [ Russell T. Davies ] when you said my life would never be the same. I feel transformed. Thank you thank you thank you." The post has amassed more than 16,000 likes and former colleagues reacted in the comments section. Ncuti wrote: "MOM AND DAD FOREVER. Love you endlessly." Whilst co-star Millie said in her reply to Varada: "I LOVE YOU." Varada's post comes after lead Ncuti addressed his own departure from Doctor Who. Last week's season finale, the Reality War, on Saturday night saw his Fifteenth Doctor regenerate - showing Billie Piper in his place - in a bid to save Poppy (played by Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps), who in one reality was the child of the Doctor and Belinda. In a video message shared by the BBC, Ncuti said: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Unfortunately, we are mere mortals." Ncuti, who also reflected on the experience elsewhere in the video, released on Saturday, added: "I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it's time." And in a statement, he said: "You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. Race Across the World pays heartbreaking tribute to contestant after sad death
Race Across the World paid tribute to a former contestant at the end of tonight's episode, after it was revealed that Sam Gardiner has died aged 24 in a car crash Race Across the World has honoured a past contestant following their untimely passing. The emotional tribute came at the close of Wednesday's episode for 24-year-old Sam Gardiner, who passed away this week. When the end credits began to roll, the viewers were met with a touching tribute to the series two adventurer. Displayed alongside Sam's photo, the message read: "In loving memory of Sam Gardiner, 2000 to 2025." Fans of the hit BBC travel show expressed their sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), with one posting: "They gave Sam Gardiner an end card. Sad." Another shared: "The tribute to Sam Gardiner [sad face]," and one more added: "Rest in peace to Sam Gardiner, who took part in series 2 with his Mum, Jo, back in 2020." A fourth viewer noted: "Lovely tribute to Sam at the end," while another wrote: "Rest in peace Sam." "We are all deeply saddened to hear the tragic news about Sam, who died this week following a car accident," the post read. The tribute expressed how evident it was to those who met him and viewers alike, just how life-changing and significant the journey had been for Sam and his mum, Jo. The homage was wrapped up with: "Since filming, both Sam and Jo have been an integral part of the Race Across the World cast family and on behalf of us all from the BBC, production and the rest of the cast, we would like to extend our deepest condolences." Sam and mum Jo were unable to compete in the final leg of the race after they ran out of money. However, Sam had described his time on Race Across the World as a "life-changing" experience.
