Australia's women have suffered a painful 8-1 defeat in their return to FIH Hockey Pro League action against the world No.1-ranked Netherlands in Amsterdam.
The Dutch opened quickly, scoring twice in quick succession, with Yibbi Jansen putting them ahead on Saturday and skipper Pien Sanders adding a second.
Hockeyroos keeper Aleisha Power was forced to make two fine saves to keep the halftime score at 2-0 and the visitors finally got on the scoresheet when Mariah Williams converted a reverse stick shot from a wide angle.
But the Netherlands again seized the initiative with Jansen completing her hat-trick with two more fine strikes, while Marijn Veen, Joosje Burg, Frederique Matla and Luna Fokke finished well to wrap up a convincing win.
"I wouldn't say one thing cost us the loss, we clearly need to tidy up defensively, but I'm really proud of the team and the way they handled certain periods of play tonight," Hockeyroos captain Kaitlin Nobbs told 7plus.
"We need to turn this result around quickly and focus on shutting down their fast counter-attack, while also using ours, which can be just as fast, to our advantage tomorrow night."
