Children in Wales take part in mass singalong for Euro 2025

Rhyl Journal14 hours ago
The event, known as the Wales' Women's Euro Singalong 2025, took place on Wednesday, July 2, and involved 1,051 primary schools across Wales.
It was organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru in partnership with the Football Association of Wales, S4C, and Boom Cymru.
Siân Lewis, chief executive of the Urdd, said: "The Urdd's #FelMerch campaign aims to inspire and empower young women and girls throughout the country, so we've jumped at the chance to show our support to the Welsh women's squad by arranging a nationwide singalong, with the help of our partners.
"Our singalong is a fantastic opportunity for pupils at Welsh and English-medium schools alike to come together, be proud of their Welsh heritage, and feel part of the national football team's campaign."
The event, held at 10:30am, gave primary school children the chance to celebrate and support the Welsh women's football team.
Children sang a selection of Welsh songs, including a new anthem, Ymlaen (Onwards), written by singer-songwriter Caryl Parry Jones and producer Branwen Munn.
Singer and presenter Aleighcia Scott, who appeared as a coach on S4C's Y Llais, said: "It's a momentous occasion for the Welsh women to be competing at the Euros for the first time, and I can't wait to take part in the Urdd's singalong to celebrate this historical moment and bring Welsh children along on the journey.
"It's been an amazing journey for me learning Welsh so far, and taking part in events like the Urdd's singalong makes me feel like the Welsh language does belong to me, and it can belong to all the children of Wales too."
In Lucerne, Switzerland, where Wales will play their opening game, the Urdd is also showcasing contemporary Welsh folk talent as part of its #FelMerch campaign.
The campaign aims to inspire and empower young women and girls to stay active and overcome barriers to participation in sport.
The Urdd will also host a National Female #FelMerch Sports Conference at Cardiff City Stadium on November 13 as part of the tournament's legacy.
The event follows the success of previous conferences designed to support and empower women and girls through sport.
The Urdd's Euro 2025 projects are supported by the Welsh Government's Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund.

Ryan Reynolds left in no doubt as James McClean gets honest about Wrexham role

Ryan Reynolds left in no doubt as James McClean gets honest about Wrexham role Wrexham have won three promotions in a row to reach the Championship and skipper James McClean has opened up on the impact of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney James McClean has praised Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for their impact at Wrexham (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images ) Wrexham captain James McClean has hailed the extent of involvement by co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in operating the club. The Hollywood duo have rejuvenated the Welsh side since taking over more than four years ago. Wrexham have secured three consecutive promotions under the guidance of manager Phil Parkinson, catapulting them from the National League to the Championship. ‌ Former Republic of Ireland international McClean has been instrumental in their ascent, contributing significantly to their recent triumphs in League One and League Two. And the 36-year-old wing-back has commended Reynolds and McElhenney for not meddling with team affairs. ‌ The celebrity pair contribute hugely in other areas, helping to enhance the club's profile through the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary, offering guidance to the squad, and making shrewd business moves to boost funds. McClean has now given credit to the actors for entrusting football-related choices to Parkinson and his coaching team. He spoke highly of his experience at the club so far, saying it has made him want to carry on playing for as long as possible. "It's class and I've found a place where I'm appreciated," McClean told the Irish News. "People have got a lot of respect for me and when that's the case, obviously I'll go above and beyond to repay that. Article continues below McClean has played a key role in Wrexham's recent promotions (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA via Getty ) "It has given me a new lease to life, I'm enjoying my football and I feel like I can do this for a long time yet. Rob and Ryan are 100 per cent part of it, but they are very clever men. They are part of it to a certain extent. "They obviously don't get involved with team affairs, they leave that to the managers, but to have owners involved as they are in the right way, it's class. There are no words to describe the impact that they've had and the praise they deserve, because it's absolutely above and beyond." ‌ Wrexham are currently gearing up to compete in the Championship after a 43-year absence. Parkinson has strengthened his squad for the challenge ahead, enlisting Plymouth forward Ryan Hardie and Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward, with more signings anticipated. Despite some analysts already doubting Wrexham's ability to secure an extraordinary fourth straight promotion, the manager is poised to receive hearty backing from Reynolds and McElhenney during the summer transfer window. ‌ And McClean is feeling confident after issuing a note of caution against underestimating the club's chances of reaching the Premier League for the first time in their history. The former Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion player said: "The rise of the club from where it was a few years ago to where it is now is great. We'll go into the season with people telling us 'this can't be done' and 'that can't be done' and 'this is a step too far', but with Wrexham it's the old fairytale story and let's see how we get on." McClean added: "We we told two in a row would have been tough, three in a row would be impossible and four in a row is just non-existent and it won't happen. We've done the previous ones, so I wouldn't put it past us doing the unthinkable."

Alex Jones names The One Show co-host who 'taught her everything'

Alex Jones names The One Show co-host who 'taught her everything' Carmarthenshire's Alex Jones was thrown in the deep end soon after taking up the reins of The One Show, after Jason Manford's sudden departure, but one BBC colleague helped her through Alex underwent a massive makeover ahead for her first One Show appearance (Image: Karwai Tang, WireImagevia Getty Images ) Welsh TV star Alex Jones has told the story of how she came to present The One Show, and credits the BBC show's Friday presenter, Chris Evans, with teaching her "everything" she needed to know about anchoring a live television programme. Speaking to Mark Wogan on his Spooning podcast, Alex explained that she had initially been contacted by The One Show producers in 2010, after then-hosts Adrian Chiles and Christine Lampard had both decided to quit. ‌ She explained that, at first, she hadn't taken the phone call about the job very seriously, not realising that she had been shortlisted as a potential presenter. ‌ She was joined for her initial One Show run by Jason Manford, with Chris Evans filling in on Fridays (Image: John Phillips, UK Press via Getty Images ) Assuming that the BBC wanted her to just report on a few segments, she turned them down, explaining that she was "too busy" with other work: "I was doing a surfing programme, a poker programme, a holiday programme, a fashion programme, and just in general, like, a bit of a chat show as well on BBC Wales. So I was quite busy, and I thought they meant to be a reporter." However, when the voice on the other end of the phone informed Alex she was being considered as a potential presenter, she decided that it was someone "winding her up," and put the phone down. Article continues below It was only later that she was persuaded the offer was genuine: "We did six weeks of auditions with various people. And ultimately myself and Jason Manford got the job." Alex enjoyed an easy on-screen rapport with Chris (Image: Eamonn McCormack, WireImagevia Getty Images ) Alex had a makeover, involving a haircut and complete wardrobe rethink to make her look less like a surfer chick and more like a tea-time presenter, and began her brief on-screen partnership with Jason. ‌ She recalled how she and Jason were booked into a posh London hotel at first, with neither of them having a permanent residence in London at the time: "Jason and I didn't know anybody in London when we came, so we were like two students ... "We lived in this hotel in Sloane Square, which was so weird. And I remember that shepherd's pie was £37, and we couldn't believe how expensive it was. We were living this funny life where we didn't know anybody. She credits Chris with teaching her 'everything' about live TV (Image: Simon James, GC Imagesvia Getty Images ) Article continues below "And after each show, we'd go to the cinema like two kids, because we didn't know anybody who were far away from our families. And then we'd eat this expensive shepherd's pie and complain to the BBC that it was £37 pounds, and why aren't you giving us any expenses?" But it was her rapport with Jason's Friday afternoon stand-in, Chris Evans that really helped her find her feet, she says: "I still have a real soft spot for him. And he, actually, was the one that taught me everything I know." After Jason left the show, Chris made it his business to help Alex feel at home in the new London media world she had found herself in: "We just got on like a house on fire and had the best time. And just every Friday, we'd go out after the show. That's when I sort of settled into London, I think," she recalled.

Shubman Gill shines and shatters records as India make England toil at Edgbaston

At tea on Thursday evening Gill was in his element on 265 not out, not just a career-best knock but also the highest ever score by an Indian batter on English soil and the most by an India captain. Having assumed the fabled number four slot once held by the great Sachin Tendulkar and most recently by fellow A-lister Virat Kohli, Gill removed any question marks about his ability to shoulder the burden of expectation. It's Tea on Day 2 of the 2nd Test! #TeamIndia power along to 564/7, with captain Shubman Gill marching to 2⃣6⃣5⃣ 👌 👌 Third session of the Day to begin 🔜 Updates ▶️ | @ShubmanGill — BCCI (@BCCI) July 3, 2025 It was a torrid day for Ben Stokes' men, put in to field by their skipper in attempt to recreate the pattern of last week's win at Headingley. By tea they had shipped 254 runs in return for two consolation wickets, Josh Tongue bouncing Ravindra Jadeja out for 89 just before lunch and part-time spinner Joe Root bowling Washington Sundar for 42 deep in the afternoon session. Both men played handy supporting roles to the exemplary Gill, who led stands of 203 and 144 in a princely performance. England have made a habit of pulling unlikely wins out of unpromising positions but their chances of changing the course of this Test already appear dim and distant with more than three full days to play. Day two has proved a challenge for England captain Ben Stokes and his team (Martin Rickett/PA) Gill started play with 114 already under his belt and was in no mood to give it away on a pitch that was playing straighter and truer by the moment. Ben Stokes took the new ball alongside Chris Woakes but neither man was able to summon any danger, an ominous warning about the run-fest that was about to unfold. Jadeja eased to his ninth fifty against England and Gill had soon surpassed the 147 he made in last week's series opener in Leeds. A steady trickle of boundaries gave the scoring rate a bump, Jadeja punching back-to-back fours off Stokes and Gill taking a liking to Brydon Carse after he entered the fray. With a wafer thin margin of error for the bowlers, Carse found himself driven hard when he strayed too full and pulled round the corner when he dug in short. England were keeping tabs on Jadeja's footwork, seemingly concerned about creating some additional rough for his own off-spin later in the game, but there was no formal intervention from the umpires. Ravindra Jadeja scored 89 and put on more than 200 for the sixth wicket with Shubman Gill (Martin Rickett/PA) Their own spinner, Shoaib Bashir, was not finding much joy and found himself clattered for two sixes in an over as he experimented with changes in pace and a lesser spotted 'carrom ball'. Just when it seemed like England had nowhere to go, Tongue found just enough bounce to draw the error, Jadeja springing into evasive action and popping a catch to Jamie Smith. Sundar's nervy start against Tongue gave England false hope of wrapping the innings up and they soon realised he was in for a long stay. They became visibly weary in the middle session, which saw 145 added to the total and a handful of signs that they were losing grip. At one stage Root and Zak Crawley collided in an unsuccessful attempt to cut off one of Gill's 30 fours, part-timer Harry Brook served up five overs of inelegant medium-pace and a clearly fatigued Carse saw four byes skip through Smith's legs as he dragged one wearily down the leg side. Gill's 200 came in 311 balls and the data showed a false shot rating of just five per cent. His next 50 was the quickest of the lot, comprising just 37 balls. Root hit Sundar's off stump with a neat off-break but his stony-faced celebration told the story of the day.
