Why Manila Isn't in the Top Cities to Live In—Yet

Manila has made some progress in recent years—but according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), it still ranks low in terms of livability when compared to other major Asian cities. The capital remains stuck in the mid-tier range, facing challenges in healthcare, safety, and public infrastructure. Global Rankings Show Stalled Growth The EIU's Global Livability Index evaluates 173 cities based on five key areas: healthcare, education, stability, culture and environment, and infrastructure. While cities in East Asia and Australasia continue to dominate the top spots, Manila has not kept pace. Back in 2021, Manila scored 53.4, and while the score has improved slightly over time—reaching 60.9 in 2023—its overall ranking dropped to 136th due to stronger performances from other cities. For comparison, top Asian cities like Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, and Osaka consistently rank among the best places to live. The Biggest Weak Spot: Stability Manila's lowest scores come from the stability category, which includes crime rates, safety perceptions, and risks of unrest. Improving public safety, boosting accountability in law enforcement, and addressing root causes of crime and insurgency are seen as urgent priorities. Healthcare Still Lags Behind The city also struggles with its healthcare system, scoring in the mid-50s to 60s— well behind its ASEAN neighbors like Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Expanding universal health coverage, increasing hospital capacity, and encouraging health workers to serve underserved communities are some of the key recommendations. Infrastructure Needs Massive Upgrades While Manila's infrastructure score sits in the mid-60s, it's still far from the regional leaders. Urban congestion, poor road conditions, and unreliable public transport are everyday issues. To move forward, experts say the city must invest heavily in metro systems, road networks, utilities, and digital infrastructure. Improved broadband, better waste management, and modernized ports and airports are also crucial. Culture and Education: Small Wins, Big Potential There has been progress in Manila's cultural and educational sectors. But despite rising scores, many students still struggle with access and quality. The city is encouraged to invest in cultural spaces, art districts, and tech-enabled learning environments that can help produce globally competitive graduates. Environmental Concerns Still Unresolved Air pollution and waste management remain big challenges. Vehicle emissions and poor enforcement of environmental laws contribute to the city's poor air quality. Garbage collection issues lead to clogged drains and frequent floods—basic issues that greatly affect the quality of life. What Will It Take to Rise in the Rankings? The highest tier in the livability index starts at a score of 80. Manila currently sits in the 60-70 range, where daily life is manageable but still comes with hurdles. The more realistic target: reach the 70–80 range, where life is generally good despite some setbacks. Experts point out that global geopolitical tensions may affect overall urban progress, but Manila still has room to grow. With focused policy and bold investments, the city could climb the global ranks and offer a more livable environment for its people.

Expanding the crypto trading experience: exploring CFDs with Octa broker

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 27 June 2025 - Crypto has been booming for quite a while now. But for those who missed the hype train or find the highly volatile crypto market unsuitable, contracts for difference (CFD) present a viable—and arguably more secure—asset type. The experts at Octa, a global broker since 2011, explain why CFDs are worth exploring to expand experience with the financial markets. New trends, old problems The crypto market experienced turmoil throughout 2024. Bitcoin reached multiple all-time highs in a span of one year, and altcoins tried to follow suit. In early 2025, the appearance of the TRUMP coin reinforces the global trend for crypto's increasing media presence and violent fluctuations of the crypto market. However, even with the current uptrend, the downsides of the crypto market persist. Excessive volatility and the speculative nature of most crypto assets make it a bumpy ride for anyone who aims for consistent outcomes. Among the most popular assets that can be traded instead of crypto, one stands apart for flexibility and accessibility: contracts for difference, or CFDs. These financial instruments allow traders to speculate on the price movements of an asset without owning it. Instead of buying or selling the actual asset, traders enter into an agreement with a broker to exchange the difference in the asset's price from when the contract is opened to when it is closed. This asset price difference constitutes CFD traders' profits or losses. Below are some of the main advantages of CFD trading over investing in traditional crypto assets. Ride with the wave One of the worst situations crypto investors can face in their journey is sudden and prolonged downtrends that appear out of nowhere. Profit potential disappears when the entire market suddenly begins to fall. In cases like these, even portfolio diversification won't help. In contrast, the contract nature of CFDs allows for more flexibility, enabling traders to act on both upward and downward trends. CFD trading enables positions to be opened in anticipation of both rising and falling prices. In other words, CFDs as an asset hold twice as much potential for gains—any swing in asset price can turn into a profit opportunity. Better conditions, lower costs Top CFD brokers can often offer superior trading services, and here's why. Crypto traders regularly face slow order execution, high slippage, and unexpected fees imposed by crypto exchanges. On the other hand, CFD brokers often offer lower spreads and more efficient order execution, which can affect profits significantly if the markets show high volatility. For example, Octa, a CFD broker boasting extensive market experience, offers some of the best trading conditions on the market. The broker's portfolio contains a wide variety of CFD assets, including CFDs on crypto, gold, and indices. Octa's clients have the option to replenish their accounts using cryptocurrency and withdraw funds directly to their cryptocurrency wallets. It is important to note that while Octa facilitates these transactions, the broker does not directly engage in providing services related to cryptocurrency. Instead, it operates through reputable partners who possess the necessary licenses to conduct cryptocurrency-related activities. No wallet, no worries Stories about astronomical amounts of cryptocurrency gathering digital dust on an unrepairable hard drive or unused e-wallet inaccessible because of a lost password have been filling the web for ages. But the risks of losing digital capital due to some transactional or e-wallet issues are more than real. CFD traders don't own cryptocurrencies—or any other underlying asset, for that matter. Instead, they are speculating on the price movement of the underlying asset and can, therefore, tap into the asset's profit potential while avoiding the risks of owning it. CFD traders don't have to manage e-wallets, and that frees them from significant cognitive load—not to mention obvious risks. What's more, the risk of a crypto exchange being hacked and all their digital capital stolen doesn't concern them either. With their flexibility, security, and accessibility, CFDs allow traders to step up their game and avoid many of the drawbacks cryptocurrencies are so famous for as a tradable asset. On top of that, with CFDs, traders can diversify their portfolios since these instruments encompass the whole gamut of various underlying asset types, including precious metals, stocks, and indices. ___ Disclaimer: This press release does not contain or constitute investment advice or recommendations and does not consider your investment objectives, financial situation, or needs. NTT has lodged preliminary prospectus to list REIT on Singapore Exchange

SINGAPORE - Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) has lodged a preliminary initial public offering prospectus for its data centre real estate investment trust NTT DC REIT on the Singapore stock exchange, according to information published on the Monetary Authority of Singapore's website on Friday. Reuters reported on Wednesday that the company was looking to lodge the prospectus with the Singapore regulator as early as this week and list on the Singapore Exchange as early as July, citing two sources with knowledge of the matter. The prospectus did not disclose the IPO amount but the two sources had said in January it could be worth up to $1 billion in what would be the largest in Singapore in several years. The prospectus also did not say when the IPO would be launched. NTT did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Friday. The last listing of similar size was a $977 million IPO for Digital Core REIT in 2021, LSEG data showed. The IPO portfolio comprises six data centre assets located in the United States, Austria and Singapore, with a total appraised value of about $1.6 billion, according to the preliminary prospectus. The sponsor of NTT DC REIT is NTT Ltd, which is part of Japanese telecommunication giant NTT. Cornerstone investors include Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC and private investment and asset management firms such as AM Squared Ltd and Viridian Asset Management Ltd, the prospectus showed. Cornerstone investors are large institutional investors that subscribe to an IPO offering before it is open to the public. There is growing interest from companies seeking to list on the Singapore Exchange, after the city-state announced measures in February to strengthen its equities market, including a 20% tax rebate for primary listings. Hong Kong-listed China Medical System said on Tuesday it had applied for a secondary listing of its shares on the Singapore Exchange. IPO proceeds raised on the Singapore Exchange surged more than five-fold to $331.6 million in the first half of this year, from $59.3 million the same period a year ago, LSEG data showed.
