Dad promised to take us to Florida, says Bitan's son
Kolkata: Three-and-a-half-year-old Hridaan has constantly been looking for his father, Bitan Adhikari (40), little knowing that he had lost him to a terrorist attack in Baisaran Valley two days ago. "My father promised to take us with him to Florida this time. He promised me. Where is he?"
Not only Hridaan, but also his mother, Sohini (37), is yet to come to terms with her husband's death. Now back in Kolkata but she can't stop going back to that horrific moment, when Bitan, a software engineer who worked in Florida, was shot dead. "I can't wipe off those nightmarish moments. The gunman who shot my husband down had a video camera, strapped to his forehead. It meant they were recording the brutal acts or may have been streaming it for some persons to watch," Sohini said, repeating her earlier account of how her husband was stopped, asked whether he was a Hindu or a Muslim, and was asked to recite the Kalma before being shot dead. "We planned the trip sitting on this very sofa, and now, I am sitting here all alone," Sohini broke down on Thursday. "We went to Kashmir to get some time to ourselves. The same Kashmir snatched everything from us. Even if we want, we can no longer be together."

Bitan's parents were at the Baishnabghata flat on Wednesday night, when his body had arrived in a coffin around 9 pm. On Thursday, the bereaved couple, back at their Behala Sakherbazar home, pleaded to be left alone. Family and friends gathered at the Keoratala crematorium around 11:30 pm for Bitan's cremation. While Sohini, along with her son, had stayed back at home, the cremation rites were conducted by Sohini and Bitan's brothers and cousins. Minister Arup Biswas and mayor Firhad Hakim were present at the crematorium. Before Bitan's body was taken away to the crematorium, Sohini stepped onto the balcony for a final glimpse of her husband. But she quickly returned as her eyes fell on their bird cage. "You asked me to buy these birds for our son, the birds remain, but you are gone," she was heard telling Bitan under her breath.

On Thursday, Sohini recounted the last few moments at Baisaran Valley. "We were having a good time in the Valley when we saw some people coming over and asking questions. Suddenly, we heard gunshots. Everyone ducked down as the militants came up to us and asked our identities. An elderly man remained silent. He was shot in the head," she recalled. "Just when we thought we had survived, my husband was shot. He slumped to the ground. At first, I thought he had fainted and could be revived, but..." Sohini broke down again.
Sohini said she tried everything she knew to revive Bitan but in vail. "From giving water, chest compressions to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, I tried everything. But he stayed unresponsive. It was then I realised it was all over," she said.

Australian mushroom murder suspect denies covering tracks
AP image An Australian woman accused of murdering three people with death cap mushrooms denied Tuesday that she was covering her tracks when she left hospital against medical advice for 95 minutes. Erin Patterson, 50, is charged with murdering her estranged husband's parents and aunt in July 2023 by spiking a beef Wellington lunch with the fatal fungi. She is also accused of attempting to murder a fourth lunch guest -- her husband's uncle -- who survived the dish after a long stay in hospital. Patterson denies all charges in the trial, which has made headlines worldwide. She says the beef-and-pastry meal, which she cooked in individually sized portions, was poisoned by accident. Two days after the lunch, Patterson went to hospital but left within minutes against medical advice, saying she needed to make arrangements for her children and animals and would return shortly afterwards. Patterson was absent for 95 minutes before she returned to receive medical treatment, the trial heard. Prosecution lawyer Nanette Rogers charged Patterson with using this time to "cover your tracks" and only went back to hospital to "maintain the fiction of being similarly unwell as your lunch guests". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Patterson rejected the accusation. "I am sure I did some thinking in that time, but it was not about covering my tracks," Patterson said. The accused said she used the 95-minute window to pack her child's ballet bag and feed the animals. The court heard that internet logs indicated Patterson's device accessed a website showing death cap mushroom sightings in May 2022 -- a year before the lunch. Patterson said she could not recall visiting that website. She rejected the allegation that she must have been familiar with it because she looked up the specific webpage. The lunch host said her "only interest" in death cap mushrooms was to ensure they did not grow in the South Gippsland area, where she lived. The prosecutor charged that Patterson's real interest was in "death cap mushrooms generally", not just whether they grew in the local area. Patterson denied the claim. Patterson had invited her estranged husband Simon to join the family lunch at her secluded home in the Victorian state farm village of Leongatha. Simon turned down the invitation saying he felt uncomfortable going, the court heard previously. The pair were long estranged but still legally married. S imon's parents Don and Gail, and his aunt Heather Wilkinson, attended the lunch and all three were dead within days. Heather's husband Ian fell gravely ill but recovered. Patterson has told the court she had an eating disorder and made herself vomit after her guests left, explaining why she did not become as ill as her lunch guests. Rogers suggested to Patterson on Tuesday that she was "lying" about vomiting. Patterson responded: "I wish that were true, but it is not." The trial in Morwell, southeast of Melbourne, is expected to last another two weeks.
