KAPIT (May 21): The Magistrates' Court here today fined a man RM3,000 in default three months in jail for illegal possession of a shotgun and nine cartridges.
Ningkan Ijau, 44, from Batu Tunggal, Baleh pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 8(a) of Arms Act 1960 before Magistrate Romario Jonoi.
The Section provides for a jail sentence not exceeding seven years or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
Ningkan settled the fine.
According to the facts of the case, a team comprising Marine Police and Sarawak Forestry Corporation personnel stopped the accused while he was riding a motorcycle at a logging road in Mengiong-Entulu here at about 10.53pm on March 8 this year.
An inspection uncovered a shotgun and nine live cartridges, which the accused admitted were his.
A serviceability test by the police on April 16 at the General Operations Force shooting range at Mile 13 Jalan Sibu-Bintulu found the weapon and ammunition were serviceable.
The Bukit Mabong district officer in a report dated April 14 stated that the accused had no record of ownership of a shotgun and ammunition licence.

RM955k morphine busted: Drug syndicate foiled at Johor courier hub
JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department foiled an attempt by a drug syndicate to smuggle more than RM955,000 worth of morphine via courier services, following the interception of two suspicious parcels. Johor Customs director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the seizure was made by a team from the department's Narcotics Branch after a thorough inspection at a Pos Laju office here at 3.35pm on April 23. He said that this was the sixth case this year involving attempts to smuggle drugs using courier services. "Previous seizures using similar methods involved drugs such as cannabis, sent from countries including Thailand and Vietnam," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Kijal assemblyman Razali ordered to enter defence on sedition charge
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here today ordered Kijal Assemblyman Datuk Razali Idris to enter his defence on a charge of making a speech of seditious nature, alleging government influence over the judiciary, at the launch of the Kemaman by-election machinery two years ago. Judge Norma Ismail made the order after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against Razali, 58, who is also the former Bersatu Information Chief, at the end of the prosecution's case. "After examining the evidence and submissions of both parties, the court found that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case. "Therefore, the accused is called to defend himself on this charge," said the judge, who then set the trial date for four days on Sept 26 and 30 and Oct 2 and 3. The proceedings were attended by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Badiuszaman Ahmad and Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman, and lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, representing Razali, who is also the Terengganu Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman.
