CCTV shows Brisbane jewellery store robbery that leaves owner with brain injuries

7NEWS12-06-2025
A manhunt is underway after four armed thieves robbed a Brisbane jewellery store and attacked the owner before fleeing.
The violent robbery unfolded just after 5pm on Tuesday at Shree Ganesh Jewellers on Gympie Rd in Chermside, when the masked men stormed the store, smashing display cabinets with hammers and metal bars.
The store owner, 38-year-old Bijaya Sunar, who was working at the time, was struck in the head several times with a hammer.
He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a stable condition.
7NEWS understands Sunar required emergency surgery to remove a haematoma on his brain.
The group stole a large amount of jewellery and escaped in a grey Honda CR-V, Queensland registration 495ZJW, believed to have been stolen from Alfred Circuit in Calamvale two days earlier on Sunday.
Police have released CCTV footage and images of the suspects, appealing for public assistance to identify them.
All four wore balaclavas and dark clothing, and they varied in build and complexion.
The first man was captured on CCTV wearing a high-vis, long-sleeved shirt, grey sweatpants, a green and brown cap, and a black balaclava.
He is described as having a dark complexion, athletic build, and is believed to be in his late teens or early twenties.
The second man was seen wearing a dark hooded jumper with 'Beverley Hills' written across it, a black ski mask-style balaclava, black gloves, and black Nike track pants featuring a white Nike logo on the upper left leg.
He is described as having a dark complexion, a large build, and standing over 182cm tall.
The third man was dressed in a black hooded jumper, black balaclava, and grey track pants.
He is described as having a fair complexion, a proportionate build, and average height.
The fourth man was seen wearing a dark hooded Air Jordan jumper, a black ski mask balaclava, and grey track pants.
He is described as having a dark complexion, a solid build, and standing at approximately 182cm tall.
Police believe the Chermside heist may be linked to another armed robbery at a Lutwyche jewellery store on May 8.
In that incident, a group armed with axes and hammers entered the store on Lutwyche Rd at about 1pm, smashed glass cabinets, and stole a significant amount of jewellery.
A woman suffered minor injuries from shattered glass, but no other injuries were reported.
The group later fled in a white Hyundai Accent Hatchback with Queensland registration 801YLM, which was believed to have been stolen from a home on Samford Rd the day before.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ken Rogers said identifying and arresting these offenders was a top priority.
'There is absolutely no place for violent crimes in Brisbane's north,' Rogers said.
'These offences are outrageous.
'We have zero tolerance for anyone who puts our community's safety or their livelihood at risk.'
Anyone who recognises the suspects or has information about the vehicles involved is urged to contact police.
They used crowbars to smash their way to $500,000 worth of gold. 7NEWS warns some viewers may find these pictures confronting.

One woman dead after vehicle rollover on Hunter Expressway

AN ELDERLY woman has died following a serious two-car crash which caused one vehicle to flip near Greta on Friday night. Emergency services were called to the Hunter Expressway near Camp Road at about 5.20pm on Friday, August 15 after two SUVs - both travelling southeast - collided. A 63-year-old woman, from Aberdeen, driving the vehicle in front, a red 2022 Isuzu, was not injured and stopped nearby; however, the occupants of the following vehicle were trapped when it rolled several times. An 88-year-old woman was a passenger in a grey 2020 Honda HR-V being driven by a 61-year-old woman from Bonnells Bay. The pair were trapped for about an hour before the older woman was released and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where she later died. The driver was taken by road ambulance to the same hospital. The Westpac rescue helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to the scene, causing the expressway to close in a northbound direction, north of Lovedale Road. A spokesperson for NSW Police said the highway north of Lovedale Road was closed briefly in both directions at about 6.15pm. Live Traffic NSW showed drivers could take northbound diversions via Lovedale Road, Allandale Road, New England Highway, and Wine Country Drive. Officers from Hunter Valley Police District attended the scene and have commenced investigations into the incident. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner. As inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage or any witnesses to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. ‘Put the f***ing knife down': Shock moment man attacks cops in Melbourne home

Harrowing footage has captured the moment a man attacked two police officers in a Melbourne home, slashing one with a box knife before fleeing the scene in a stolen car, which he later set alight. Newly released footage shows Diesel Jackson, 25, fighting a male and female police officer, neither of whom were equipped with tasers, at a home in Frankston on March 22, 2024. The officers had arrived at the property at 6.30pm that evening, responding to reports of a man with a stolen white Jeep Grand Cherokee. Footage, released by a judge to 7News on Friday, shows Mr Jackson waving a knife in front of the male police officer. 'Put it down! Put it down!' the officer shouted, while pointing a gun at the man. 'Put the f***ing knife down!' At one point, the female officer is heard pleading with the male officer to let Mr Jackson go, after being 'trapped' alone in the room with him. 'No, no, let him go, let him get out … I'm trapped!' she said. During the altercation, Mr Jackson was sprayed with capsicum spray but it had little effect. 'Let him go, not worth it,' the female officer said as Mr Jackson made his way downstairs. Outside, the pair stood and watched as Jackson drove away, only to return moments later. He accelerated toward them as they stood on the pavement. 'Watch out, he's going to ram us!' the female officer shouted. 'Get out of the way!' What followed was a high-speed police pursuit captured by aerial footage over southeast Melbourne, with Jackson allegedly reaching speeds of up to 170km/h. The stolen Jeep was seen mounting kerbs and median strips, continuing on even after hitting police-deployed stop sticks. The chase came to an end when Jackson lost control and spun out on Cranbourne Road. He then set the vehicle alight before fleeing on foot. He was caught shortly afterwards. Both officers were taken to hospital following the incident, which has since renewed pressure on the Victorian Government to accelerate its plan to equip all frontline police with tasers. Wayne Gatt, chief executive of the Police Association Victoria, said tasers would 'definitely have helped in the situation.' Jackson, 25, was later charged with 28 offences, including assaulting an emergency worker on duty, intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, and theft of a motor vehicle. He was convicted of eight offences and three summary offences and sentenced to six years in prison, with a non-parole period of four years. 'Our thoughts remain with the victims and their loved ones,' a Victorian Government spokesperson said in a statement provided to 'We thank all the men and women of Victoria Police who put their lives on the line every day to keep Victorians safe. 'We have delivered $214 million to give Victoria Police next-gen tasers and we continue to introduce a range of tough new laws that back the work of Victoria Police.'
