Thirumangalam bus stand to be renovated at Rs 2.77 crore
MADURAI: The Thirumangalam bus stand, which has been operating for more than 30 years, is undergoing renovation works by the municipality for Rs 2.77 crore. The temporary bus stand established on Virudhunagar road lacked lighting facilities and had only one shelter to protect from the heat/rain.
According to TNSTC sources, the bus stand is a centre point for inter-district buses connecting Usilampatti, Sholavandhan, Kariyapatti, T Kallupatti, Kallikudi, Virudhunagar, and neighbouring districts- Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. Around 940 buses, including 620 local buses and 320 other district buses, are used by thousands of passengers every day.
In the wake of the situation, the Thirumangalam municipality began renovating the existing bus stand. According to an official, the renovation work includes toilets, a lactating room, six shops, an entrance arch, and a road facility inside the bus stand will be completed in 45 days.
Stressing the difficulties, a passenger, R Sakthivel (27), stated that the temporary bus stand cannot withstand the rain and dust during summer. Though it has a shelter, it's not enough because only 10-15 people can use it at a time, and more than 100 passengers are using this bus stop at any given time. Since the onset of summer, passengers have urged the municipality to address this issue by including more shelters and drinking water facilities on the premises.
Another passenger, S Vijay (33), said, even though it's a temporary bus stand, basic facilities must be provided for the passengers. The authorities must also ensure clean toilets, even though it's a temporary bus stand.
An official from the municipality assured to look into the issue and take necessary actions.

Dehu Nagar Panchayat must pay Rs14.36 crore fine for sewage discharge into Indrayani river, pollution regulator tells NGT
1 2 3 Pune: Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has submitted an affidavit to National Green Tribunal (NGT) stating that Dehu Nagar Panchayat must pay Rs14.36 crore in environmental damage compensation (EDC) for illegally discharging untreated sewage into Indrayani river between April 1, 2020, and Nov 30, 2024. The NGT bench in Pune had earlier directed MPCB to calculate the EDC to be levied on Dehu Nagar Panchayat for contaminating river water, which resulted in repeated fish kills. This followed the tribunal's principal bench in New Delhi taking suo motu cognisance of a TOI report titled, "Hundreds of fish found dead in Indrayani river at Dehu," published on March 15 this year. The pollution regulator provided a breakdown of the EDC in its affidavit filed on May 28, which includes cost of bioremediation and setting up of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at Kapur and Ghat Nullahs. The board, in an affidavit filed at the tribunal on May 28, stated that the EDC is to be levied to prevent discharge of pollutants into Indrayani river, causing harm to the environment. The board calculated that the panchayat will pay Rs 2.38 crore for bioremediation activities at Ghat Nullah and Rs 2.79 crore for bioremediation at Kapur Nullah. The board sent a notice to Dehu Nagar Panchayat on April 25, informing it about the EDC it had calculated. The bench directed that notices be issued to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) at Andheri in Mumbai, and the Pune district collector and sought their responses. The matter was then heard by the western bench on Oct 14, 2024. Dehu Nagar Panchayat's STP was not found functional, which led to pollution of nallahs and discharge of effluent, resulting in fish as big as 45 kg and up to 4 feet in height being found dead. MPCB stated that officials from the board and from Dehu Nagar Panchayat visited the site on March 14, 2024 and observed that a fish kill occurred at Indrayani river, near Kapur Nalla and at Ghat area on a large scale, as the water was contaminated with sewage found during sample testing. Previously, a fish kill incident occurred at the same location in June 2023. The final amount to be levied is to be decided in the next hearing to be held at the tribunal. Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 13 (ANI): Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson on Friday said they are devastated by the plane crash in Ahmedabad and said the company is committed to providing 'full and unstinting assistance' in these difficult times. Campbell Wilson said he also met key stakeholders in the government and assured them that Air India is committed to full cooperation with those working on the ground and to the investigations. 'We know that the investigations will take time, but we will be fully transparent and will support the process for as long as it takes. Air India will continue to do everything we can to care for those affected by this tragedy and to uphold the trust placed in us,' the CEO said in a video message post on the airline's X handle. Air India's London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take off from Ahmedabad on Thursday killing 241 people on board. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Wilson said they are also deeply concerned for the well-being of the students of the medical hostel involved in the accident. 'Air India is committed to providing full and unstinting assistance in these difficult times,' he said. Wilson said he visited the crash site this morning and was deeply moved by the scenes. 'All of us at Air India are devastated by this loss and grieve for those affected, their families and their loved ones. Air India's advanced team of nearly 100 caregivers and 40 engineers has now arrived in Ahmedabad. The technical team is now helping at the site and the caregivers are providing support to families. Many more caregivers are travelling to Ahmedabad to provide further support,' he said. . 'We have set up Friends and Relatives Assistance Centres at Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi and London Gatwick airports for the next of kin of air passengers and crew members. These Centres are facilitating their travel to Ahmedabad and providing them full support. He was assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 hours of flying experience. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Runway 23 at 1339 IST (0809 UTC). It gave a mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. 'Aircraft immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site,' an official said. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Friday confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran on Friday wrote an emotional letter to employees, expressing grief and solidarity. Calling June 12 'one of the darkest days in the Tata Group's history,' Chandrasekaran said, 'Words are no consolation right now, but my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the people who died and were injured in the crash. We are here for them.' 'I want to say, like you, we want to understand what happened. We don't know right now, but we will. There is plenty of speculation all around us. Some of it may be right, some of it may be wrong. I want to urge patience,' he wrote.
