Trichy: Municipal administration minister K N Nehru launched nine new city buses for TNSTC Trichy region at the Central bus terminus here on Friday. The buses will be operated under the free bus travel scheme for women (Vidiyal Payanam). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BS stage VI buses will replace ageing fleets connecting Central and Chathiram bus terminuses. Initially, the buses were planned to be operated once the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur becomes operational. However, as the opening of the terminus has been postponed to June-end, the buses were launched from the Central bus stand. Talking to reporters after the event, the minister said vacant shops at the Chathiram bus terminus will be allocated to traders soon. On desilting waterbodies, the minister said, "Ahead of opening of the Mettur dam, the desilting work in canals and channels has been expedited as per the instructions of the chief minister. Other waterbodies are also being desilted as a part of preparatory measures before the monsoon to prevent inundations. Around 80 crore have been sanctioned for the work." TNSTC sources said the Kumbakonam division was allocated 173 new buses, of which 110 buses including 50 city buses and 60 mofussil buses, were commissioned. The remaining buses — 26 city buses and 37 mofussil buses — will be launched in a phased manner. About 30 low-floor buses are likely to be allocated for operations in Trichy and Thanjavur, sources added.

Elcot park techies seek better lighting, bus trips

Madurai: IT professionals working at the Elcot IT Park at Ilanthaikulam near Mattuthavani have urged the authorities to improve infrastructure and safety measures in and around Pandi Kovil ring road, citing poor lighting and lack of public transport. These concerns were raised at a meeting with commercial taxes minister P Moorthy on Tuesday, when he visited the park. The employees highlighted the urgent need for shuttle services linking the IT park to major transit points like Mattuthavani and Periyar bus stands. "It is difficult to return home safely after night shifts, especially for women. Many hesitate to ride two-wheelers at night due to poor lighting," said M Shanmuga Priya, a team lead at Chella Software. Representatives from HCL added that they were willing to install LED streetlights around TIDEL Park area if permission was granted. The minister assured the employees that he would coordinate with TNSTC to initiate a shuttle route but the service should not cause losses to the transport corporation and have to be used regularly. On allowing companies to install LED lights, he said he would speak to the corporation commissioner. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan told TOI that the concerned stretch of Pandi Kovil ring road falls under Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRIDC), which collects tolls for its maintenance. "However, we will coordinate with the district administration to find a workable solution for the lighting and safety concerns," she said. Balamurugan Palani, president of Madurai Infrastructure and Development Group, proposed a comprehensive bus route connecting Ilanthaikulam and Vadapalanji Elcot IT parks. It could pass through Mattuthavani, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Pandi Kovil Junction, Gomathipuram, Aavin Junction, Anna Bus Stand, Goripalayam, Arapalayam, Kochadai, Achampattu, Virattipattu, Nagamalai Pudukottai, and end at Vadapalanji SEZ campus. He stressed the need for increased patrolling, CCTV surveillance, and other safety measures to protect women techies commuting at odd hours. Wrapping up the session, minister Moorthy said the Elcot IT Park project, initiated by former chief minister M Karunanidhi, helped generate local employment and transform Madurai into an emerging IT hub. With the upcoming TIDEL Park in Mattuthavani, the region is poised for further growth, he added. Earlier, the minister paid tributes to Karunanidhi at his statue at the park, on his birth anniversary.

HC directs TNSTC to pay relief to driver for harassment

1 2 3 Madurai: Expressing serious concern at the authorities of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) adopting unfair labour practices by harassing a driver who approached the inspector of labour and court seeking conferment of permanent status, Madras high court has directed the corporation to pay a compensation of 25,000 to the driver. The court was hearing the petition filed by S Selvaganapathy, who was appointed as a crew driver in 2013. After working continuously for a period of 480 days, the petitioner claimed regularisation as per Section 3(1) of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishments (Conferment of Permanent Status to Workmen) Act, 1981. Since his services were not regularised, he filed an application before the inspector of labour. In 2015, the inspector of labour directed the authorities to confer permanent status to the petitioner. The corporation challenged the order in HC; however, the petition was dismissed. The petitioner stated that the then general manager and checking inspector, for their personal vengeance, adopted unfair labour practices against him, even though he was eligible for conferment of permanent status. Hence, he filed the present petition in 2019. In the counter, the corporation submitted that the petitioner was imposed with several punishments and fines for his negligence, causing loss to the management, disobedience, and misbehaviour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Toyota 4Runner Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) MorninJoy Undo Since the then general manager and then checking inspector retired from service, nothing survives in this petition. Justice B Pugalendhi observed that considering the number of litigations and the manner in which the applications were filed by the corporation, the court is of the view that the authorities adopted unfair labour practices against the petitioner. Since unnecessary litigations were filed even after the orders of the division bench of this court, the court is of the view that the petitioner was victimised. The petitioner made certain allegations against the then general manager and then checking inspector before their retirement. In all fairness, the authorities ought to have considered the same; however, they did not take proper action on the petitioner's representation and allowed them to retire. The judge observed, "The mighty TNSTC is capable of filing a number of petitions including reopening petitions and at the same time, the petitioner suffered due to the conduct of the transport corporation." Hence, in the interest of justice and in view of the decision of the Supreme Court, the judge directed the corporation to pay the compensation to the petitioner for dragging him into unnecessary litigations, within eight weeks. The petition was disposed of.

414-cr Kuthambakkam terminal to open shortly under PPP model

Chennai: After much delay, the 414-crore Kuthambakkam mofussil bus terminal near Thiruvallur is set to become operational in the coming months. The (CMDA) is in the process of appointing a private concessionaire to oversee its operations and maintenance under a 15-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Spread over a core area of 24.80acres, the upcoming terminal will serve as a major hub for west-bound buses, including services operated by TNSTC and MTC. The state-of-the-art facility features parking for 136 buses, 64 idle bays, 44 commercial shops, dormitories, and a full suite of public amenities. An additional 9-acre area has been earmarked for idle bus parking and a police station. To enhance connectivity, the project includes a newly constructed 36-metre-wide, 2.2-km-long access road from NH-4, covering an extra 18.20 acres—bringing the total development area to 52 acres. "There were a lot of small issues in Kilambakkam even after its inauguration. In Kuthambakkam, all these problems will be addressed beforehand. It will be inaugurated soon after these minor issues are sorted out," said minister for CMDA P.K. Sekar Babu. The selected concessionaire will be required to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Companies Act before signing the concession agreement. A mandatory 15-day trial run must be conducted after fulfilling all preconditions, marking the beginning of the concession period. The concessionaire will be responsible for managing all terminal operations—including bus bays, public amenities, parking, and commercial spaces—and will be allowed to generate revenue through advertisements, parking fees, and shop rentals. "Importantly, the concessionaire may sub-licence specific services like security or parking but will retain full responsibility for the quality and delivery of services," said a senior official.
