
Ranya Rao case: DGP Ramachandra Rao re-appointed
Giving respite to the Director General of police K Ramachandra Rao, who has been linked to the gold smuggling case involving his step daughter, Ranya Rao, the State government on Monday (August 11, 2025) withdrew the compulsory leave imposed on him and posted him as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement to the upgraded, vacant post.
In a notification issued, it is stated that the DGP, DCRE, post is equivalent to the post of Director General of CID, Special units and Economic offences under rule 12 of IPS (pay) rules 2016.
Mr. Rao in March was questioned by the State government-appointed inquiry committee led by Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta , after the arrest of his step daughter , Ranya Rao for allegedly trying to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold at the airport .
During the inquiry, it was revealed that Ranya had allegedly been misusing police escorts provided to her in violation of rules, to evade custom checks and checkout of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The State government formed the Gaurav Gupta Committee to probe the misuse of police protocol services and the possible role of Mr. Rao in the case. He was sent on mandatory leave on March 15.

Bengaluru: The state govt Monday revoked the compulsory leave order of director general of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao and posted him as DGP, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement. Rao was sent on compulsory leave on March 15, days after his daughter, actress Harshavardhini Ranya, aka Ranya Rao, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a gold smuggling case. The govt had not mentioned any specific reason while sending the 1993 batch officer on leave. Ranya, caught with 14.2 kg of gold at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), has been lodged in the central prison at Parappana Agrahara. She was booked under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. Karnataka govt withdraws compulsory leave imposed on IPS officer Ramachandra Rao
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 11 (PTI) The Karnataka government on Monday appointed senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao as the DGP for Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, withdrawing the compulsory leave imposed on him following the arrest of his stepdaughter and actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case. Prior to this new role, he served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. 'The order of compulsory leave with respect to Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN 1993) is hereby withdrawn and the officer is posted with immediate effect and until further orders as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in the upgraded vacant post," a government order said. The post of Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement is declared equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units & Economic offences, Bengaluru under Rule 12 of IPS (Pay) Rules 2016 as included in Schedule Il of the said rule, it said. Rao was sent on compulsory leave in March. Ranya Rao (34) was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 3 upon her arrival at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai, and gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore were seized from her. The next day, the DRI said it seized gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and cash amounting to Rs 2.67 from her residence in Bengaluru. Ranya Rao was accused of misusing police escorts, provided to her in violation of rules, allegedly to evade Custom checks and checkout of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The Karnataka government had formed a committee to probe the role of Ramachandra Rao, if any, in the alleged gold smuggling activity of his step daughter. He had appeared before the Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta-led committee for questioning. CS-CID arrests 261 people in seven months for PDS rice smuggling in Salem
The Salem Civil Supplies-Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID) police have arrested 261 people in connection with smuggling of public distribution system (PDS) rice in the last seven months in the district. Salem district has 1,737 fair-price shops, including 1,264 full-time shops and 473 part-time shops. Rice is distributed free of cost to ration card holders, ranging from five kg to 35 kg a card, every month. Likewise, other essential commodities are also given. From January 1, 2025, to July 31, 2025, the Salem CS-CID police has registered a total of 246 cases, including 218 cases related to PDS rice smuggling. The police seized 79.80 tonnes of PDS rice and 101 LPG cylinders from the offenders. They also arrested 261 people in connection with these cases and detained four under the Black Marketing Act. The police also seized 62 vehicles from the offenders, including 44 two-wheelers, one three-wheeler, and 17 four-wheelers. Likewise, after various legal processes, 179 vehicles, including 97 two-wheelers, nine three-wheelers, and 73 four-wheelers, were released in the seven months. The officials attached to the CS-CID said that people shall provide information regarding the illegal transport and hoarding of essential commodities through toll-free number 1800-599-5950. The information will be kept confidential and immediate action will be taken against the offenders, officials added.
