Emma Raducanu hires Rafael Nadal's former mentor Francisco Roig as the eighth coach of her career
The Spaniard will be the eighth coach of Raducanu's career and perhaps the most high-profile - given he was in the box for all 22 of Nadal's Grand Slam titles.
Raducanu has been with old friend Mark Petchey since Miami and results have been strong, but the fact Petchey had to split his time between coaching and his broadcast commitments meant it was never a workable long-term option.
Petchey himself said in July: 'We are very aware she needs a second coach to come on board and maybe just one coach, not me, as well.' It appears that latter option has been chosen, although it is understood that Petchey will remain close to team Raducanu in an informal role.
Mail Sport understands discussions with Roig, 57, began during Wimbledon and there was a trial soon after. Obligations meant he was not available until this week – he was due to land on Monday evening in Cincinnati where he and Raducanu will begin preparations for the final WTA 1000 event before the US Open.
Roig, a former player who reached a career-high ranking of No 60, acted as No 2 coach to Nadal's uncle Toni from the beginning of his career. Known as a top technical coach, he was part of team Nadal from 2005 to 2022 then spent a year as the coach of Italian former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini from 2023-2024.
For Raducanu, this is a move away from her preference for surrounding herself with a close circle who have known her since before she won the US Open in 2021. Slovak coach Vlado Platenik was the most recent departure from this formula and he lasted just 14 days.
Roig will have to earn the trust of a young woman who does not trust easily, but if he can this could prove a fruitful partnership. The man from Barcelona spent 18 years in the inner sanctum of the most dedicated and ferocious competitor this sport has ever seen – he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
His technical expertise will also be important for a player who is still in the early stages of her career with a few kinks to iron out, especially on the serve and forehand.
The main draw of the Cincinnati Open begins on Thursday August 7, with Raducanu, at No 38 in the live rankings, looking to get a couple of wins and earn herself a seeding at the US Open.

Sex toy tossed on LA Sparks' court in third WNBA incident in past seven days
A sex toy landed near Indiana's Sophie Cunningham after it was thrown from the stands in Los Angeles while the Fever played the Sparks on Tuesday night. The incident in Los Angeles occurred with 2:05 left in the second quarter with the object landing in the lane near Cunningham, who had been vocal on social media about fans throwing the toys on the court. Kelsey Plum kicked the toy into the stands. Cunningham walked over to the Sparks bench and was laughing about it. According to social media posts, another green toy was thrown in New York, but didn't reach the court – landing near a child. A fan was arrested, according to the WNBA, and was ejected from the arena and faced a minimum one-year ban. On Friday, another sex toy was thrown in Chicago under a basket after a whistle was blown to stop play during the third quarter of Golden State's 73-66 victory over the Sky. An official kicked the object aside before it was picked up and removed. It's unknown if the fan who threw the object at the Sky game was arrested. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,' the league said in a statement. 'In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.'

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka reached the semi-finals of the Canadian Open for the first time after beating Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2 in the quarters on Tuesday, while Ben Shelton eliminated Alex de Minaur on the men's side. It marks Osaka's first WTA 1000 semi-final since Miami in 2022, as the Japanese former world number one needed just over an hour to secure victory over the 10th seeded Svitolina. Osaka capitalised on Svitolina's unforced errors to break twice and move within a game of taking the first set. Despite dropping serve while Svitolina threatened to shift the momentum, Osaka held her nerve, broke back and closed out the opener. The second set was more closely contested, but Osaka converted two more break points to seal the win in Montreal.
