Clemson shows up when it matters to take down USC Upstate in the Clemson Regional
Clemson broke open a tie game with a four-run eighth inning to pull away from USC Upstate, winning 7-3 on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in the opening round of regional play. The top-seeded Tigers leaned on timely hitting and clutch pitching to take down the No. 4 seed Spartans and move into the winner's bracket.
Tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, TP Wentworth put Clemson back in front with a go-ahead RBI single. Andrew Ciufo followed with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to bring in another run, and Cam Cannarella delivered the knockout blow with a towering two-run homer to right-center. The blast, his fourth of the season, gave the Tigers a four-run cushion that would hold the rest of the way. Cannarella finished the night 3-for-5 with four RBI and scored twice in a game where he delivered in nearly every big moment.
The eighth-inning surge came after a tense back-and-forth game. USC Upstate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Johnny Sweeney's solo home run off Drew Titsworth—the ninth homer allowed by the Clemson starter this season. The Spartans tacked on another run in the fourth as Scott Newman doubled and later came home on a Gage Griggs RBI single, giving Upstate an early 2-0 advantage.
Clemson responded with a big fifth inning, sparked by TP Wentworth's leadoff single and a nine-pitch walk drawn by Ciufo. Cannarella then lined a two-run double down the left-field line to tie the game at two. He advanced to third on a foul out and came home on Collin Priest's sacrifice fly, putting the Tigers ahead 3-2 for the first time. That lead nearly disappeared the next inning when Titsworth loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, prompting a critical bullpen call.
Enter Jacob McGovern, who has been lights out since returning from injury in mid-April. The left-hander immediately struck out the first two batters he faced, then watched as Dominic Listi made a diving catch in left field to end the inning and strand all three runners. McGovern went on to dominate the next few innings, tossing 3.1 shutout frames and striking out six of the 11 batters he faced. He's now thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings and has held opponents scoreless in 10 of his last 12 appearances.
After McGovern exited with one out in the eighth, Clemson turned to Lucas Mahlstedt to close things out. But the submariner gave up a long game-tying home run to Scott Newman on his very first pitch, briefly resetting the score at 3-3. However, Mahlstedt settled down from there and pitched the final 1.2 innings to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Offensively, Dominic Listi played a key role with a 2-for-3 night and two stolen bases. Wentworth was also steady at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
With the win, Clemson improves to 45-16 and advances to face No. 2 seed West Virginia in the winner's bracket on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Tigers will look to carry their momentum forward as they continue their push through the regional.

Carlos Correa delivers blunt message after Astros' brutal sweep

Carlos Correa delivers blunt message after Astros' brutal sweep originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Astros lost the series finale to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon 7-2, getting swept in the three-game series. The Tigers held to the Astros to just three runs in the series, and outscored Houston by 15 runs. The Astros have now lost four straight games and five of their last six. Following Houston's 1-0 extra-innings loss on Tuesday night, third baseman Carlos Correa gave an encouraging message in a team meeting to keep faith and move forward. However, the Astros couldn't avoid the sweep on Wednesday afternoon, and Correa kept it blunt after the loss. The Astros got 'Out Played' The Astros fell behind early on Wednesday as six batters reached base and five runs scored before Astros' starter Framber Valdez could even record an out. Houston was down 6-0 at the end of the first inning, and could never rally its way back. 'We got outplayed,' Correa said (h/t 'It's as simple as that. They played better baseball. They played a really good brand of baseball and we didn't. When you are facing one of the best teams in the league and we don't show up, that's going to happen.' The Tigers hold the best record in the American League, and they showed why against the Astros. Detroit's offense showed up in the first and third games of the series, scoring a combined 17 runs. Then, Tigers' ace Tarik Skubal led a shutout, extra-inning win in the middle game to help compete the sweep. Luckily for the Astros, the Mariners lost again on Wednesday and Houston remains on top of the AL West. "We're in a great spot besides the terrible play in the last week. We've got to acknowledge that, and we've got to recognize the things we are not doing very well right now in order for us to move forward, be better and be the team we know we can be," Correa said (h/t "We want to look at the bigger picture, but also we want to have a fix for what's been happening the last week. We got a good opportunity to do that in a four-game set in Baltimore. "That's where my head is at right now. I want to flush this series away. I want to start fresh tomorrow and go out there with a positive mind and go out there to win." Although the Astros pitching didn't perform in two of the three games against Detroit, the offense has been in a major slump. The Astros have scored just seven runs in their last six games combined, and are hitting .168 with five total extra-base hits. Houston's been shutout in four of those games, including two against the Orioles who they'll face next. "We had a really good collective approach, but in baseball there's some days that you pick up the bat and look at the pitcher and you don't even know where to put your hands," Correa said (h/t "You don't even know what the hell you're doing at the plate. It seems like it's happening to a lot of us at the same time. We've got to put in a little more work and go out there and try to have those at-bats again." The Astros have been in the middle of a rut right now, but have been aided by the struggles of other teams within their division. Houston still leads the AL West by 1.5 games over the Mariners, but it needs to get things going in the right direction soon. The Astros now travel to Baltimore to begin a four-game weekend series with the Orioles on Thursday. "We've got to continue to grind and this is what happens in August," Astros manager Joe Espada said (h/t "You fight through these tough stretches."

Astros' bullpen depth exposed in series sweep by Tigers

Astros' bullpen depth exposed in series sweep by Tigers originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Astros lost closer Josh Hader about a week ago to shoulder soreness, and the timeline for his return during the regular season is unknown. After being swept by another World Series hopeful team in the Detroit Tigers, the Astros still sit 1.5 games up in the American League West thanks to the Phillies sweeping the Mariners. However, Houston gave up 7 and 10 runs in two of their three losses to Detroit. Astros' bullpen is being challenged without Josh Hader In the first game of the series, which was a 10-0 Tigers victory, starter Spencer Arrighetti didn't do the bullpen any favor by giving up five runs early, but Tayler Scott followed by giving up five runs of his own, and it was quickly out of hand. Astros' ace Hunter Brown turned in a marvelous start in a pitchers' duel between himself and CY Young favorite Tarik Skubal, and the bullpen performed exceptionally well except for Kaleb Ort, who issued three walks in the bottom of the 10th inning. You can't put all the blame on the pitching staff for the sweep, though. Houston scored just two runs in the series and was shut out in the first two contests. It's well known that Bryan Abreu is taking over the closer role in Hader's absence, but it's more of a matter of whether the Astros are going to put themselves into a position for him to close out games, because that remains to be seen. Abreu has been one of the best relievers in the sport, posting a 1.61 ERA in 56 innings and 84 strikeouts. He added his first save of the season over the weekend and will likely carry the closer role for another couple of weeks, until Hader does or does not return.

Clemson's Frustrating Transfer Portal Stance Lands Harsh Reality Check

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Clemson Tigers were one of the most dominant national powers just over a half-decade ago, making four National Championship Games in five years and winning two of them. Since then, however, Clemson has lost some of its luster. The Tigers went 10-4 last season and were hammered in the first round of the College Football Playoff. They've lost at least three games in each of the last four campaigns, and while they appear to be on the rise heading into 2025, there are some who are skeptical of Dabo Swinney's club. More news: Insider Reveals Major Red Flag for Clemson QB Cade Klubnik Take Stewart Mandel of The Athletic, for example, who wonders if Swinney's window at Clemson has closed thanks much in part to Swinney's lack of activity in the transfer portal over the years. "And as those struggles mounted, many others and I criticized Dabo for stubbornly steering clear of the transfer portal," Mandel wrote. "He relented a little this offseason, landing a couple of possible key contributors, but his lineup will still be comprised almost entirely of homegrown guys. It'd be a heck of a told-you-so to win a national title in 2025. However, my concern is depth. While the 'X career starts' guys get the most attention in the portal, teams also use it to build and maintain their depth." Dabo Swinney, head coach of the Clemson Tigers, looks on during the game against the LSU Tigers in the College Football Playoff National Championship game at Mercedes Benz Superdome on January 13 in New Orleans,... Dabo Swinney, head coach of the Clemson Tigers, looks on during the game against the LSU Tigers in the College Football Playoff National Championship game at Mercedes Benz Superdome on January 13 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Clemson's 29-game winning run came to an end with a 42-25 loss to LSU. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Swinney is far from the only coach who has attempted to stick to an old-school approach, but the problem is that that doesn't necessarily work anymore. At least not if you try to use it rather exclusively. Clemson has been outstanding at recruiting for quite some time now, but so have plenty of other top schools in the country. The difference is that the Ohio States, Alabamas and Oregons of the world have also strongly utilized the portal. More news: Insider Exposes Painful Question That Could Derail Oregon Ducks Perhaps Swinney will start getting more with the times now, but there is no doubt that his slowness to adapt in recent years has hurt the Tigers. Clemson is ranked fourth in the AP top-25 poll going into the new college football season, so to be fair, Swinney has done a fine job putting this current roster together. But will it be enough? We are about to find out. The Tigers will open their season at home against No. 9 LSU on Aug. 30. For more on college football, head to Newsweek Sports.
