Honeymoon Murder Sparks Trend: Professional Probe Into Prospective Brides
In Madhya Pradesh, where weddings are often celebrated with opulence and tradition, a new trend is quietly taking root, one that blends suspicion and surveillance. Families are increasingly hiring private detectives to investigate the "character" of prospective brides before marriage.
Sparked by sensational cases like the honeymoon murder, detective agencies across the state are witnessing a surge in pre-wedding inquiries - most of them targeted towards young women.
From social media activity and past relationships to behaviour, friend circles, even criminal records - everything is being scrutinized before the wedding rituals begin.
"After the Sonam Raghuvanshi case, we have seen a sharp rise in requests to investigate girls. People want to know about their character, if they have boyfriends, criminal backgrounds... basically, everything," said Rajesh Pandey, who heads a local detective agency.
"We have received 18 such cases recently, and most of them want only this kind of targeted verification," he said.
Previously, investigations of this sort were mostly sought to uncover extra-marital affairs or financial fraud.
But now, agencies say the focus has shifted to deeply personal aspects of a woman's life - college friendships, online behaviour, call records, even the criminal record of ex-boyfriends.
"Earlier, people would hire detectives only in rare cases. Now we are seeing 70 to 80 inquiries every month," said Subhash Chaudhary, Zonal Head of Action Detective Services. "For some families, a detective is now more important than a pandit. Love marriages and online relationships have led to a new fear - no one wants to take a chance anymore," he added.
Detective agencies are even offering structured pre-marriage verification packages, ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
These include surveillance, digital forensics and background checks. One agency's checklist includes dressing style, voice tone, friends group, daily schedule, and hours spent online.
Behind the surge lies fear-fuelled by crimes where women were accused of killing their husbands post-marriage, like the infamous case of Muskan Rastogi -- who, along with her boyfrien allegedly killed her husband, Saurabh Rajput. Some allegedly did it on their honeymoon -- like Indore-based Sonam Raghuvanshi, who allegedly conspired with her boyfriend to kill husband Raja Raghuvanshi. Others allegedly planned murders and hid bodies in suitcases and drums.
Psychologists are sounding the alarm.
"People are adopting crime-show thinking and applying it to real life. Watching too many crime serials is blurring their perception of trust," said Dr Satyakant Trivedi, a Bhopal-based clinical psychologist. "Marriages are supposed to start with trust. Now they start with doubt," he added.

BJP issues show-cause notice to UP MLA over attack on Vande Bharat passenger
The BJP on Monday issued a show-cause notice to party MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha in connection with an attack on a passenger allegedly by the legislator's associates over a seat dispute aboard the Vande Bharat Express in Jhansi district and directed him to submit an explanation within seven days. Parichha is the MLA from the Babina constituency in Jhansi. If a timely and satisfactory response is not received it will be compelled to take the 'strictest disciplinary action' against him, the party said. Videos of the incident have surfaced on social media. The notice, issued by BJP's Uttar Pradesh general secretary Govind Narayan Shukla, said information about the MLA's conduct and actions on the train had come to light through media and social media reports. The MLA's behaviour has adversely impacted the party's image and amounts to indiscipline, he added. The incident took place on June 19 while the MLA was travelling to Jhansi with his wife and son on the Bhopal-bound Vande Bharat Express. The matter came to light the next day after photos and videos of a man bleeding from the nose went viral on social media. The injured passenger was later identified as Raj Prakash, who was on his way to Bhopal. While the MLA has lodged a complaint with the police, Raj Prakash is yet to take any legal action. MLA Parichha has alleged that two unidentified passengers were causing a nuisance by sitting with their legs stretched out, blocking the passage for others. When he asked them to behave, they allegedly misbehaved with him and used abusive language, he claimed. The MLA further said the two passengers again misbehaved with him after suspecting that he had reported the matter to the railway authorities. He also claimed that when the train reached the Jhansi railway station, the two called their associates, who then misbehaved with the people who had come to receive him at the station. During their preliminary inquiry, the Government Railway Police (GRP) found that two of the MLA's seats were adjacent, while the third was located at a distance. The MLA is believed to have requested Raj Prakash to swap his seat so that his family could sit together. When Prakash refused, the MLA approached the ticket examiner to request three seats together, but the examiner expressed his inability to make any changes. On the MLA's second request, Prakash allegedly got into a heated argument with him. The police said when the train arrived at the Jhansi railway station, the MLA's associates — who were present to receive him — allegedly assaulted Raj Prakash, leaving him injured. As the matter escalated, a police team was sent to Bhopal but was unable to locate Prakash. The team, however, met GRP officials in Bhopal and collected CCTV footage from inside the train and the station platform. According to the GRP, after the train reached the Rani Kamlapati railway station in Bhopal on June 20, Prakash met officials of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the GRP but chose not to lodge a formal complaint. The Uttar Pradesh Police said they are coordinating with their counterparts in Bhopal. CCTV footage from the Rani Kamlapati railway station shows Raj Prakash getting off the train. However, footage from the CCTV cameras inside the Vande Bharat Express did not clearly capture any assault, the police claimed. 'While the visuals suggest some commotion, no act of assault is distinctly visible,' an official said. When contacted, GRP (Jhansi) Deputy Superintendent of Police Sohrab Alam said they are investigating the case based on the MLA's complaint and are in the process of collecting evidence, including electronic records, before taking any further action. Raj Prakash, however, has not filed any complaint so far, he added.

Lucknow: A viral CCTV footage purportedly showing aides of BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha brutally assaulting a passenger on the Vande Bharat Express has ignited widespread outrage on social media, prompting the BJP to issue a show-cause notice to the two-time Babina (Jhansi) MLA. Bomb threat triggers panic in Navrachana school
Vadodara: An email threatening a bomb blast at the city-based Navrachana Higher Secondary School (NHSS) at Sama spread panic among scores of parents and students on Monday morning. However, nothing suspicious was found by the bomb detection and disposal squad, dog squad, and special operations group, which sanitised the campus. The mail mentioned that the bomb would go off by 2 pm. "The Vadodara police immediately coordinated with us to sanitise the entire campus," said Tejal Amin, chairperson of NES. "We also had a prize distribution ceremony at the school in which parents were present. We postponed the ceremony, and by 9.30 am, the entire school premises was evacuated," she said. Sources said the school received two emails, including one on the school's official email ID and a second on the email ID of the school principal. The contents of the email made some mention of the political situation in Tamil Nadu and were a bit similar to the email sent to NISV earlier this year. A similar threat was received at the Bhayli-based Navrachana International School, Vadodara (NISV), on Jan 24. "An offence was registered at the Sama police station, and the IP address of the sender is being traced," DCP Zone 4 Panna Momaya told TOI. "We thoroughly searched every classroom and common area, but no suspicious object or explosive device was found," she said.
