Canada and Malta say they will recognize Palestine, joining France and UK

Saudi Gazette4 days ago
NEW YORK — Canada and Malta both announced on Wednesday that they plan to formally recognize the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September, joining France and the United Kingdom, who announced earlier they would do so.
The move to recognize Palestine as a state comes amid a renewed push in Europe to put pressure on Israel to stop its devastating war in Gaza, which has led to widespread starvation in the strip, as well as to halt the expansion of settlements in the West Bank.
"The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable," Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney speaking after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, emphasising the need for international cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
"Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution. An independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the state of Israel in peace and security," he added.
In return, Canada wants to see "much-needed reforms" to the governance of the Palestinian Authority, including general elections to be held in 2026 with the exclusion of the militant group, Hamas.
"Canada will increase its efforts in supporting strong democratic governance in Palestine," Carney concluded.Malta has long supported Palestinian sovereignty and the self-determination for its citizens. Christopher Cutajar, the permanent secretary at Malta's Foreign Ministry, made the announcement earlier at a United Nations conference on a two-state solution."As responsible actors, we have a duty to work to translate the concept of a two-state solution from theory into practice," Cutajar said.It comes a day after Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced the United Kingdom would formally recognize the state of Palestine before the annual gathering of world leaders at the 193-member General Assembly in September.French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his country's decision to formalise the move in September a week earlier, which would make France the first G7 country and the first permanent member of the UN Security Council to recognize Palestine. At least 147 member states of the United Nations, including ten European Union member states already recognize the state of Palestine. The act of recognition involves acknowledging the sovereignty and independence of Palestine within its pre-1967 Middle East war borders. This includes the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.Israel opposed a two-state solution and boycott the UN conference held in New York City, alongside its closest ally, the United States. — Euronews

Security Council to meet on Gaza hostages: Israeli ambassador

UNITED NATIONS, United States: The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session on the hostages in Gaza, Israel's ambassador said Sunday, as outrage built over their fate in the war-torn enclave, where experts say a famine is unfolding. Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, posted the announcement on social media amid anger over videos showing two of the hostages held by Palestinian militant group Hamas emaciated. Danon said that the Council 'will convene this coming Tuesday for a special emergency session on the dire situation of the hostages in Gaza.' The videos make references to the calamitous humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where UN-mandated experts have warned a 'famine is unfolding.' Israel has heavily restricted the entry of aid into Gaza, while UN agencies, humanitarian groups and analysts say that much of what Israel does allow in is looted or diverted in chaotic circumstances. Many desperate Palestinians are left to risk their lives seeking what aid is distributed through controlled channels. Earlier Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross to get food to the hostages. In response, Hamas's armed wing said that it would allow the agency access to the hostages but only if 'humanitarian corridors' for food and aid were opened 'across all areas of the Gaza Strip.' The Al-Qassam Brigades said it did 'not intentionally starve' the hostages, but they would not receive any special food privileges 'amid the crime of starvation and siege' in Gaza. Over recent days, Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad have released three videos showing two hostages seized during the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing war. The images of Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David, both of whom appeared weak and malnourished, have fueled renewed calls in Israel for a truce and hostage release deal.

Hamas says no special food privileges for Gaza hostages

GAZA CITY: The Palestinian militant group Hamas said Sunday that Israeli hostages would not receive any 'special privileges' in the food they are given compared to the rest of the Gazan population. '(Hamas) does not intentionally starve the captives, but they eat the same food our fighters and the general public eat. They will not receive any special privileges amid the crime of starvation and siege,' Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, wrote in a statement. The group added that it would only allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide aid to Israeli hostages on the condition that humanitarian corridors are opened to Gaza. '(We) are ready to respond positively (to) any request by the Red Cross to deliver food and medicine to enemy prisoners. However, we condition our acceptance on the opening of humanitarian corridors... for the passage of food and medicine... across all areas of the Gaza Strip,' Hamas's military wing wrote in a separate statement. The response came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested that the ICRC help provide food to the hostages held in Gaza, and after the agency issued a 'call to be granted access to the hostages' in a statement posted on X.

Sydney's Historic March for Gaza: Tens of Thousands Call for Ceasefire

Demonstrators gathered to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, chanting 'Ceasefire now,' after the Supreme Court authorized the march just one day before, allowing the event to proceed despite initial resistance. Organizers hailed this decision as 'historic.' Despite torrential rain, tens of thousands joined the March for Humanity, carrying placards demanding politicians end the war. Notably, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange attended, alongside federal MP Ed Husic and former NSW Premier Bob Carr, marking the bridge's first closure for a public assembly since 2023. Court Ruling and Public Safety Justice Belinda Rigg approved the 'March for Humanity' just 24 hours before it began, stating she acknowledged safety risks but found the organizers' arguments about the urgent Gaza crisis compelling. Consequently, police closed the bridge to vehicles, granting protesters legal protection against assembly-related charges. However, families, including those with small children, joined the peaceful demonstration. Police officers from the riot squad monitored the event. 'I know it's the other side of the world, but it affects us here massively,' said Alec Beville, a father who compared the children in Gaza to his son, Frankie. 'We could be helping a lot more with aid.' 'Our government hasn't imposed decent sanctions on Israel,' added Zara Williams, carrying her baby, Avery. 'We can't do nothing while there's a forced starvation of an entire population.' Two hours into the event, NSW Police texted attendees, ordering an immediate halt 'due to public safety.' They instructed the crowd to turn back towards the city 'in a controlled way.' Police have not yet provided any crowd size estimate. Transport for NSW warned motorists of major city delays after road and public transport networks faced significant disruption throughout Sydney. Growing Pressure for Palestinian Statehood Meanwhile, Australia faces mounting pressure to recognize Palestinian statehood, following similar indications from France, Canada, and the UK. However, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for lasting security for Israel before considering recognition of a Palestinian state. The historic march on Sydney Harbour Bridge underscores the global call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite logistical challenges and legal hurdles, the protest highlighted urgent humanitarian concerns and the growing pressure on governments to take action. Short link : Post Views: 15
