I tried out every Londoner's worst nightmare and spoke to other commuters

Metroa day ago

Trapped in a cable car with strangers.
Nope, this isn't a new horror film. But that is what came to my mind when I heard about the TfL's chatty cabin initiative in North Greenwich.
Running for the second time, the chatty cabins initiative on the IFS Cloud Cable Car allows people to talk to each other while taking in the unobstructed view of London.
It's been set up to help tackle loneliness in London, which, according to the campaign to end loneliness, which estimates 8% of Londoners experience severe loneliness.
Interested in the real-life psychological experiment, I wanted to try every Londoner's worst nightmare – eye contact and conversation in public transport – while dangling 295ft over the River Thames with nowhere to escape.
But I discovered that curiosity is not dead – and Londoners are a warm bunch when one person dares to break the ice.
While the Tube air hangs heavy with stressed commuters trying to avoid eye contact, the cable car I jumped into with five other passengers invited conversation.
Facing each other on the ski lift-style cabin, conversation began to flow as we took in the sights and introduced ourselves.
Any shred of anxiety was gone as the cable car whizzed on, making the journey ahead with strangers feel more like an opportunity to be present rather than a torture chamber (although the mostly see-through cabin was very warm).
With only a 20-minute ride ahead of us, it was clear we all wanted to make it count and use the rare opportunity where talking to strangers is not considered too nosy.
William Bolding was the first to admit that 'I'm afraid of heights' as he clutched the handrail and braced for the journey ahead. As the wind picked up, he asked whether it was normal for the cable car to swing so much.
He had booked a slot on the chatty cabin – which sold out last time the initiative ran – to challenge his fear, he admitted.
Jackie Hufford had ridden the cable car with her children years ago when it launched for the 2012 London Olympics, and she wanted to relive the memory after reading about the chatty cabins in Metro.
'I love talking to new people and travelling,' the south east Londoner said.
Caroline McLeary joked that 'everyone thinks we know each other already, but Jackie and I have just met,' and the pair, both from the Lewisham area, shared numbers at the end of the ride.
Caroline said she wanted to come try the chatty cabin to 'do something for myself' although she had to catch two buses to get there.
'Everyone experiences loneliness,' she said.
Naturally, the conversation turned to travel as the City Airport loomed in the background.
While we couldn't agree on which London airport is the handiest to get to, one thing we agreed on was how expensive travel in the capital is.
Despite the heavy and personal theme of loneliness, which brought us for the ride in the first place, my face hurt from smiling by the time we touched back down on the Greenwich Peninsula terminal.
I could have easily gone for a pint with our chatty cabin gang.
Despite the sold-out success of the first chatty cabin, there are no plans to bring it on the Tube.
'It would be difficult on the Tube,' Josh Crompton, the head of IFS Cloud Cable Car for TfL, said. More Trending
'The Cable Car is different because it's a closed environment. But we certainly encourage people to have conversations.'
Josh said the range of people who have tried the chatty cabins includes people 'who struggle with bereavement to tourists coming to London on their own and wanting to engage with people, single parents who are in with their children all day and are looking to get out.'
'I'm one of those people who struggles opening conversations as much as people do, and that's why we create that environment. It's quite refreshing to have a conversation with people, and I don't generally do that, and I find it quite hard, and this was easy and quite refreshing,' he said.
The chatty cabins initiative runs this week until Friday and aims to help tackle loneliness in London as part of the Loneliness Awareness Week.

OnlyFans confirms Bonnie Blue 'permanent ban' after porn star's latest sex stunt

Adult star Bonnie Blue, known for having sex with 1,057 men in a day, has been 'permanently banned' from OnlyFans for posting and intending to make 'extreme' content. This comes after the Derbyshire porn star was planning to break her own world record by sleeping with 2,000 men in a single day in a stunt she was branding a 'petting zoo'. An OnlyFans spokesperson told Metro: 'Extreme challenge content is not available on OnlyFans and is not permitted under our Acceptable Use Policy and Terms of Service. 'Any breach of our Terms of Service results in content or account deactivation… This is why it has been necessary to take this action. We always act when users breach our terms of service.' When Metro asked how long Bonnie's ban will be in place for, OnlyFans replied: 'The ban is permanent.' She has since revealed her 'petting zoo' stunt has been cancelled. OnlyFans has been valued at £8 billion thanks to its adult content creators — the same value as film studios, Paramount. The creators on the platform keep 80% of the money their subscriptions generate — which means Bonnie could be about to lose out on the £600,000 she claims to make each month. Back in 2021, OnlyFans had even announced it was going to ban all adult content from its platform, but this ban lasted six days before the company U-turned. Bonnie's decision to join OnlyFans in 2021 stemmed from the fact that she wasn't feeling happy with the direction her life was going in – and wanted a new challenge. She previously told Metro that she had given up on her dreams of being a midwife because she didn't want to stay in education, so she began working in recruitment. 'I thought, is this what my life is going to be? I realised I wasn't happy with 80% of my life. I didn't want to get old thinking I wish I'd done more,' she explained. Once she realised it wasn't for her, she sold her house and moved to Australia to live a 'beach lifestyle.' Using her savings, she was able to give up work for two years. Not wanting her time in Oz to be the only 'highlight' of her life, she first began working as a cam girl, inspired by other women doing the same thing online. Almost instantly, she was earning £2,030 a week. 'I loved it – it gave me so much confidence,' she said. But it was her antics last year that placed Bonnie firmly in the spotlight, when she posted call outs for 'barely legal' teens or 'schoolies', to sleep with her, setting herself up in student-heavy areas in the UK. All encounters were filmed, even if she was taking the teen's virginity, which caused outrage online and earned her the label of a predator. She has refuted these claims and says her content is educational. Bonnie took her content to the next level on January 11, when she slept with 1,057 men in a single day. The 25-year-old OnlyFans star announced her record-breaking sex marathon with an inflammatory Instagram caption, writing: 'Over 1,000 men in a day! Thank you to all the barely legal, barely breathing and the husbands.' The sex worker thanked the men who took part, saying: '1,057 isn't possible without volunteers… thanks for the fluids boys. 'Honestly thank you so much because if it wasn't for you turning up putting your **** inside me I wouldn't have any of this whatsoever, and it really has changed my life. Hopefully I can continue pleasuring you.' Men were put into groups of five had two minutes with Bonnie collectively, while those who had sex with her alone had 30 to 45 seconds. It's this type of extreme content that has led OnlyFans to take the decision to ban the star from its platform. It's not just Onlyfans that have taken issue with Bonnie's extreme challenges. Sophie Rain, 20, a leading OnlyFans creator and co-founder of Bop House – a collective of OF creators, hit out at Bonnie telling The Blast: 'It's no longer women empowerment. 'It's shock value, and she's making a joke out of all of us. We built this space to take control of our bodies and our finances, not to fake pregnancies, weddings, or throw cake at strangers in the street.' It appears she's also alluding to the fake pregnancy stunt pulled by Bonnie's rival Lily Phillips, who hit headlines after sleeping with 101 men in a day. More Trending 'Brands don't take us seriously anymore. Media doesn't take us seriously,' Sophie added. 'I'm tired of explaining that not all of us are doing circus acts for views.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video British broadcaster Ashley Louise James also challenged Bonnie back in November on This Morning on her 'predatory pursuit of teenage boys and her antagonistic (and outdated) attitudes to women'. She followed up on Instagram, saying: 'Bonnie has openly bragged about have sex with 'fresh 18 year olds' and has described it as 'babysitting adults' and even declared that she 'loves taking virginities'. 'I find this behaviour disturbing and predatory. I also find it deeply disturbing and disgusting that there are so many men and boys willing to queue up and have sex with her.' Netflix drops 8 new episodes of action series that left fans 'thirsting for more

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Netflix's hit action-comedy series FUBAR starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is back with a brand new season of thrilling chaos. The show, which just dropped eight new episodes, follows a father-and-daughter duo, Luke and Emma Brunner, portrayed by The Terminator star and Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro. When they discover they both secretly work for the CIA 'their high-stakes missions get tangled up with awkward family dynamics.' After the first season proved a smash success for the streamer in 2023 – topping the streaming charts and securing 25.57 million viewing hours in its first week – the second season was a sure bet. 'It is bigger, it is better. There are more laughs. There is more of everything … including one more legend!' Arnold teased about the new season, referring to The Matrix actor Carrie-Anne Moss who plays German spy Greta Nelso, who also happens to be Luke's ex. The second season has been hotly anticipated by fans of the show who have shared plenty of rave reviews. 'Time, my dear friends, had no power over me while I was watching Fubar. It vanished like a sneaky ninja, as I was too engrossed in the exciting escapades that unfolded before my eyes. 'Each episode left me thirsting for more, as the relentless thrill carried seamlessly from one installment to the next,' Sabrina Viot wrote on Google reviews. 'Schwarzenegger may well the best comic action star who ever graced a movie or TV screen. He carries Fubar like the champion weightlifter he once was, and does so in ways which make all the rest of the cast shine,' David Aronofsky praised. Michel Lu also offered plenty of glowing words to Mocia's performance, calling her a 'scene stealer'. 'She not only convincingly portrays a skilled and determined agent but also a complex daughter wrestling with the realities of her unusual family life. Her on-screen chemistry with Schwarzenegger is superb, blending respect, conflict, and love in equal measure,' they added. The second season also sees the return of Travis Van Winkle as Aldon, Fortune Feimster as Roo, Milan Carter as Barry and Scott Thompson as Dr. Pfeffer, among other familiar faces. More Trending This may not be everyone's cup of tea, however, with some fans complaining of the comedy 'falling flat' at times, calling certain moments 'corny' and unrealistic, so you'll have to give it a try to see if it is up your alley. Speaking about what to expect from the new season, creator Nick Santora called it 'bananas' and the Brunner family will have 'a million things they're going to have to deal with.' 'They are family, and they know the only way they are going to survive is as a family working together. And they're going to have to do so if they don't want the world to end as we know it!' Santora added. View More » Fubar seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? Outbreak Festival 2025 in Victoria Park: set times, full lineup, tickets and everything you need to know

Last weekend (June 6-8), LIDO Festival made its debut in Victoria Park. Gig-goers enjoyed sets from Massive Attack, Jamie XX and Nia Archives as they welcomed the brand new event. This weekend (June 13-15) is set to be even bigger, as LIDO welcomes Charli XCX, London Grammar, and an entire sub-festival appropriately called 'Outbreak'. Outbreak Festival was born in Manchester in 2011, and, according to LIDO's organisers, 'has built a major platform to the UK's consistently thriving counterculture'. This year, it's making its way down to the capital and bringing with it a 'diverse and eclectic' host of underground bands and artists. This Friday, for one day only, Londoners will have the chance to experience Outbreak without getting a train up north. Here's everything you need to know about Outbreak at LIDO this weekend. When and where is Outbreak at LIDO Festival? Outbreak will be taking place in Victoria Park on Friday, June 13, ahead of the rest of LIDO's sets on Saturday and Sunday. It will take place in Victoria Park, in the same place and same stages as the wider LIDO fest. Timings Doors will open at 2.30pm, or 2pm if you have an advanced entry ticket. Headliners Alex G and Turnstile will take to the main stage at 7.35pm and 9.25 respectively. What's the full Outbreak LIDO lineup and set times? You can find the rest of the stage splits for the day below: Main Stage Mudi Sama: 2.35pm - 2.55pm Momma: 3.20pm - 3.50pm Fleshwater: 4.20pm - 4.50pm Julie: 5.20pm - 5.50pm Danny Brown: 6.20pm - 6.55pm Alex G: 7.35pm – 8.35pm Turnstile: 9.25pm – 10.55pm Stage 2 Kumo 99: 2.35pm – 3pm Drug Church: 3.30 – 4.05pm Speed: 4.35pm – 5.10pm Superheaven: 5.40pm – 6.10pm Glassjaw: 6.45pm – 7.30pm Knocked Loose: 8.15pm – 9.15pm Stage 3 They Are Gutting a Body of Water: 3.40pm – 4.10pm feeble little horse: 4.40pm – 5.10pm Jane Remover: 5.40pm – 6.10pm Model/Actriz: 6.40pm – 7.25pm Have A Nice Life: 8.15pm – 9.15pm Sunny Day Real Estate: 8.15pm – 9.15pm Festival map The festival map will be the same as the one for the rest of LIDO – you can have a look at it here. How to get to LIDO festival If you're travelling by tube, the best stations to get off at are Mile End (District, Central and Hammersmith and City lines) and Bethnal Green (Central line), both of which are within walking distance of Viccy Park. Just be aware that there are no night services on the Hammersmith and City or District lines. By bus, you can get any of the 8, 277, 309, 339, 388, D3 and D6 services, because they all have stops nearby the venue. If you are using public transportation, make sure to check before you travel, and have a look here for this weekend's disruptions. Are there any tickets left for Outbreak at LIDO Festival 2025? Yes, there are still tickets left for Outbreak, and you can buy them on the official LIDO website here. Day passes begin at £85.55. What's the weather looking like? The weather forecast is currently alright, although it could be better. There is a yellow warning for thunderstorms for Greater London starting from 3pm, but temperatures are looking like they'll be hitting mid-to-high twenties, so bring a light rain jacket to cover all bases. We also recommend you up to date with the latest weather forecasts before you leave for the event tomorrow. Afterparties If all of that somehow isn't enough, you can keep the party going at the Colour Factory, where DJs such as Kumo 99 and LustSickPuppy will be playing. You can grab your tickets for £13 here.
