I tried out every Londoner's worst nightmare and spoke to other commuters

Metro11-06-2025
Trapped in a cable car with strangers.
Nope, this isn't a new horror film. But that is what came to my mind when I heard about the TfL's chatty cabin initiative in North Greenwich.
Running for the second time, the chatty cabins initiative on the IFS Cloud Cable Car allows people to talk to each other while taking in the unobstructed view of London.
It's been set up to help tackle loneliness in London, which, according to the campaign to end loneliness, which estimates 8% of Londoners experience severe loneliness.
Interested in the real-life psychological experiment, I wanted to try every Londoner's worst nightmare – eye contact and conversation in public transport – while dangling 295ft over the River Thames with nowhere to escape.
But I discovered that curiosity is not dead – and Londoners are a warm bunch when one person dares to break the ice.
While the Tube air hangs heavy with stressed commuters trying to avoid eye contact, the cable car I jumped into with five other passengers invited conversation.
Facing each other on the ski lift-style cabin, conversation began to flow as we took in the sights and introduced ourselves.
Any shred of anxiety was gone as the cable car whizzed on, making the journey ahead with strangers feel more like an opportunity to be present rather than a torture chamber (although the mostly see-through cabin was very warm).
With only a 20-minute ride ahead of us, it was clear we all wanted to make it count and use the rare opportunity where talking to strangers is not considered too nosy.
William Bolding was the first to admit that 'I'm afraid of heights' as he clutched the handrail and braced for the journey ahead. As the wind picked up, he asked whether it was normal for the cable car to swing so much.
He had booked a slot on the chatty cabin – which sold out last time the initiative ran – to challenge his fear, he admitted.
Jackie Hufford had ridden the cable car with her children years ago when it launched for the 2012 London Olympics, and she wanted to relive the memory after reading about the chatty cabins in Metro.
'I love talking to new people and travelling,' the south east Londoner said.
Caroline McLeary joked that 'everyone thinks we know each other already, but Jackie and I have just met,' and the pair, both from the Lewisham area, shared numbers at the end of the ride.
Caroline said she wanted to come try the chatty cabin to 'do something for myself' although she had to catch two buses to get there.
'Everyone experiences loneliness,' she said.
Naturally, the conversation turned to travel as the City Airport loomed in the background.
While we couldn't agree on which London airport is the handiest to get to, one thing we agreed on was how expensive travel in the capital is.
Despite the heavy and personal theme of loneliness, which brought us for the ride in the first place, my face hurt from smiling by the time we touched back down on the Greenwich Peninsula terminal.
I could have easily gone for a pint with our chatty cabin gang.
Despite the sold-out success of the first chatty cabin, there are no plans to bring it on the Tube.
'It would be difficult on the Tube,' Josh Crompton, the head of IFS Cloud Cable Car for TfL, said. More Trending
'The Cable Car is different because it's a closed environment. But we certainly encourage people to have conversations.'
Josh said the range of people who have tried the chatty cabins includes people 'who struggle with bereavement to tourists coming to London on their own and wanting to engage with people, single parents who are in with their children all day and are looking to get out.'
'I'm one of those people who struggles opening conversations as much as people do, and that's why we create that environment. It's quite refreshing to have a conversation with people, and I don't generally do that, and I find it quite hard, and this was easy and quite refreshing,' he said.
The chatty cabins initiative runs this week until Friday and aims to help tackle loneliness in London as part of the Loneliness Awareness Week.

Europe's 'Paris of the East' is an underrated gem with £37 flights

You don't have to work for Runway magazine to have Paris on your bucket list. From haute couture and charming bistros to some of the most romantic backdrops on the planet, the City of Love ticks all the boxes for a perfect city break. However, like several European destinations, the French capital is grappling with the effects of overtourism. City bosses recently hiked tourist taxes and banned key boxes in a bid to fight illegal short-term rentals. As of 2024, 3-star hotels in Paris charge a levy of €5.20 (£3.90) per person per night, while 4-star accommodations are higher, at €8.45 (£7.19). At Metro, we're all about promoting sustainable travel and putting 'hidden gems' on the map, as long as the destination is truly eager for visitors. So when we heard about the 'Paris of the East' — an underrated city with flights from the UK starting at just £37, we wanted to share it with our readers. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. Enter Bucharest, which has the beautiful buildings, tree-lined boulevards and swish cafés we associate with Paris — all without the steep price tag and overcrowding. Recently ranked ninth in The Times' roundup of 'the best affordable city breaks in Europe', Romania's capital and largest city is actively promoting tourism. The government is pouring money into accommodation and public transport in a bid to attract travellers, while other countries are pushing them away. So if you'd feel guilty heading to an overrun holiday hotspot, rest assured that visitors here are very much welcome. During the 19th and 20th centuries, a number of French artists and intellectuals frequented Bucharest. At the time, society mirrored the Parisian way, with a focus on fashion, elegance and sophistication. Likewise, prominent Romanian artists – including Constantin Brâncuși – studied in Bucharest before making their names in France. Visually, the city earned its 'Little Paris' nickname thanks to its architectural similarities with France's capital. Of the many buildings and landmarks influenced by the French, the most obvious is the Arcul de Triumf, Romania's version of the Arc de Triomphe. So if you fancy swapping a trip to Paris for this affordable destination dupe, here's everything you need to know about Bucharest. The streets of Bucharest really do look like Paris; ornate flourishes of Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Romanian Revival are on display on every corner. A wander through the city's expansive boulevards will take you to the Palace of the Parliament, the world's heaviest building weighing roughly4,098,500 tonnes. You can get a closer look at its size and grandeur on a guided tour, with ticket prices costing around 60 Romanian Leu (£12). When in 'Little Paris,' it would be rude not to check out the Muzeul Micul Paris (Little Paris Museum), a fascinating destination for anyone interested in art, architecture, the Romanian bourgeoisie era. The museum is filled with antique furniture, clothing, and perfume, from the 'Belle Époque,' the period of French and European history from 1871 until 1914. There's also an antique gallery and a vintage photography studio, where you can experience an immersive journey into the past. Tickets cost 25 Lei (£4.18). Step out of the time capsule and into nature with a walk around Herăstrau Park, on the northern side of the city. The lake is dotted with trendy restaurants and bars — and since Bucharest in August sees daytime highs of 31°C which drops to a more comfortable 18°C by the evening, it's a fantastic spot for sun-seekers and sun-downers alike. If you're looking for something active, boat rentals and hydro-bicycles are also available along the shore. Metro's Alice Murphy spent a day at the park during a trip to Romania and said it is easily accessible by train, bus, taxi, or on foot. She also recommends the Free Walking Tour of Bucharest, where you can learn about the city's history and culture, and a visit to the National Village Museum to discover how people live in rural Romania. Of course, no European city break is complete without a stroll around, and Bucharest's pedestrian-only area is very tourist-friendly and brimming with terraces, cafes, restaurants, and shops. Wizz Air flies direct to Bucharest from London Stansted and London Luton for as little as £20 one-way. Flying from another part of the UK? Ryanair flies from Leeds Bradford airport for £37, while Birmingham flies with Wizz Air for the same price. We're suckers for an Old Town. Whether in Bruges or Krakow, there's something magical about wandering through narrow Medieval streets or sampling the different local restaurants serving traditional food and drink. You might want to branch out a little here though, as for Alice Murphy, Bucharest's Old Town is 'stag central,' with an abundance of bars and clubstaking away from its otherwise charming vibe after dark. And if you're looking for somewhere that's escaped the hen and stag mob, Alice recommends Brasov. A train ride away in Transylvania, you'll find a smorgasbord of traditional charm and modern city life. Brasov's Old Town, which has received UNESCO World Heritage status, is worlds away from its capital counterpart. More Trending Embroidered with medieval buildings, including the Gothic Black Church and the Council House, the city is home to Rope Street, the narrowest street in Romania. The Bucharest to Brasov train takes around two hours and 30 minutes, with prices ranging between £5 to £14. Love Venice? Why not try 'Venice of the Algarve,' an 'understated' destination with flights from £28. Further afield you'll find the 'Venice of the Middle East,' a hidden gem that's 32°C in April. Elsewhere, the Spanish 'mini Maldives' has recently bagged a brand new TUI flight from a UK airport, while closer to home there's the 'Hawaii of the North,' a little UK island with 240 hours of sunshine in May. 'One of the smartest shows on television': Your favourite TV spy thrillers

Intricate plots, heart-pounding action sequences and bucketfuls of suspense. Just three of the ingredients that make the spy genre so gripping. Amazon Prime Video's new crime thriller, The Assassin, is no exception, having proved popular with critics since landing on the streamer last week. Metro's own TV editor, Sabrina Barr, awarded the series four stars, praising its 'gripping twists' and confessing it had her on the edge of her seat from the very beginning. The series stars Keeley Hawes, who is no stranger to spy thrillers, having previously appeared in Bodyguard and Spooks, as a retired former assassin living in Greece. Her life is turned upside down when her estranged son (played by Freddie Highmore) arrives on the remote island. They soon find themselves on the run, and she is reluctantly drawn back into her former profession. Following the popularity of The Assassin, we asked Metro readers to share more of their favourite TV spy thrillers. From a 'tantalising' limited series to long-running classics, these are the five shows that came highly recommended by our readers… 'I was immediately enraptured by The Assassin's fast-paced action and cleverly choreographed fight sequences, as well as the wry British wit embodied by Julie and Edward as they strive to make something of their awkward relationship. Despite the wild twists and turns of the story, it still feels relatable and grounded at its core. 'Julie's no-nonsense wisecracks are a joy to watch, as is Edward's bumbling nature as he's forced to grapple with his entire world being flipped upside down. While he's the sensible one, his mother lives life on the reckless side – an entertaining subversion of the typical roles played by a parent and child.' Read Sabrina's review in full. Metro readers James Lyddall and Pramuditha Lakshan both recommended The Night Manager, which boasts a star-studded cast including Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander. The BBC thriller is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by John le Carré, who is known for his gripping novels about espionage. The critically acclaimed thriller aired on BBC One in 2016, picking up three Golden Globes among many other awards. It follows Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a former British soldier working as a hotel night porter, who must infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Roper (Laurie). In good news for its many fans, the BBC revealed last year that the spy thriller will be returning for not one but two new series, with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role. The release date for series two has not yet been confirmed. Where to watch: All six episodes of The Night Manager are available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Prime Video. Another award-winning series, The Americans, came highly recommended by Metro readers. Simone Rumfitt and Chathurinda Sumithraarachchi both suggested the series, which is set during the Cold War and follows the marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) are in an arranged marriage, but their connection soon becomes genuine. As the demands of their job increase, so does the personal toll, and their ability to protect both their cover and their family's safety becomes much more difficult. One reader said of the series, which aired between 2013 and 2018: 'This is a top five favourite show for me, not a single misstep or bad season, just a show that started great and got consistently better season to season and ends perfectly.' Many fans have raved about the ending of The Americans, with one reader hailing it as: 'One of the best series finales ever.' Where to watch: All six seasons of The Americans are available to stream on Channel 4. Unsurprisingly, several Metro readers also praised Apple TV Plus smash hit Slow Horses — and particularly Gary Oldman's performance as the dishevelled and obnoxious Secret Service agent Jackson Lamb. A user calling themselves Green4cl0ver added of the series, which follows a dysfunctional group of MI5 outcasts: 'This is how modern spy shows should be!' The show is so popular that it's already been renewed for a seventh season, even though the fifth instalment is yet to air. Set in modern-day London, the agents, who have been relegated to a run-down office called Slough House, must navigate the smoke and mirrors world of espionage along with their rude and flatulent boss. Slow Horses season five will arrive on Apple TV Plus on September 24. Metro TV reporter Ruth Lawes awarded the latest season of Slow Horses five stars in her review, writing that the show 'should be bigger than Line of Duty'. 'The drama does away with most thriller tropes – from an overabundance of female victims to missing children in backwater towns – and is all the more compelling for it. 'Season 4 takes this up a notch by making the plot, normally what drives any thriller, almost secondary to the characters. 'Despite their various vulgarities, I cried twice during the season because, for the first time in a long time in a crime drama, I actually cared about them. 'It's not just Oldman, who puts in a performance of a lifetime, but the rest of the Slough House misfits I'm rooting for too.' Read Ruth's full review. Where to watch: All four episodes of Slow Horses are available to watch on Apple TV Plus. Elsewhere, Netflix hit The Diplomat was praised by Metro readers as 'one of the smartest shows on television'. The series follows a US diplomat (played by Keri Russell), who juggles her job as ambassador to the United Kingdom with her strained marriage to a political star (Rufus Sewell). As she attempts to defuse international crises and form strategic alliances with other countries, her husband Hal finds it difficult to step out of the spotlight and let his wife shine. And there's more to come, with the series soon returning for a third season. Though the release date is yet to be confirmed, Netflix has said The Diplomat season three is expected to land in Autumn 2025. Where to watch: Both seasons of The Diplomat are available to watch on Netflix. Several readers mentioned BBC series Spooks, which ran for 10 seasons between 2002 and 2011. It follows a group of MI5 operatives who are tasked with keeping Britain safe from organised crime and terrorist activity. Metro reader Val Howard said it's so good that they're rewatching all the old episodes. More Trending The show saw a number of stars make appearances throughout, including The Assassin's Keeley Hawes as well as Matthew Macfadyen, Robert Hardy, Nicola Walker and Hugh Laurie, to name a few. The complex plots and strong characters made Spooks an instant hit for the BBC, with audiences showering praise on the series. Though some viewers at the time criticised the activities of the intelligence officers as unrealistic, audiences in recent years have commented on how relevant some of the storylines are to today. View More » Where to watch: All 10 series of Spooks are available to watch on BBC iPlayer and UKTV. Got a story?
