Bengaluru: While pain, anguish and trauma unfolded outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium Wednesday, a potential disaster was averted by the skin of the teeth inside the stadium — thanks to the swift response of alert private security personnel and police officers.
By 5pm on that fateful day, as it became clear certain stands, particularly Stand 13, were overcrowded, D Bhaskar, the managing director of Supreme Care Services, a private security agency deployed by event partner DNA, could sense trouble.
"Stand 13 looked dangerous. People were jumping from the upper tier to the lower level to get a better view," Bhaskar recalled. "Some even used pillars and fences to climb down. It was a crowd unlike what we usually see during IPL matches — much more aggressive and unruly."
Bhaskar, drawing on his army training and two years' experience of handling RCB match security, read the situation fast enough to realise it was spiralling out of control. "Several stands were operating at over 120% capacity. Those spectators who stood up were blocking the views of those behind, which led to pushing and jostling," he said. "I feared people could fall off the upper stands straight to the ground."
Bhaskar immediately approached a senior police officer at the venue.

"I must thank him — he acted without any delay. Five police officers from the VIP area were immediately told to control the situation on the upper stands. They moved to the upper tiers and cleared out those threatening to act dangerously," Bhaskar said.
Warnings on loudspeaker
Meanwhile, Bhaskar's team comprising former army personnel, used walkie-talkies and loudspeakers to warn the spectators. "We told the crowd that they were under surveillance and strict action would be taken against any unruly conduct, which instilled some fear and helped calm the situation."

'RCB has lakhs of cricket fans': Letter to Karnataka govt shows warning was issued before stampede; new revelation puts pressure on administration

BENGALURU: A senior police officer had raised red flags over the lack of security personnel and potential crowd control issues just hours before a stampede killed 11 people outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebration on Wednesday. According to official letter accessed by the TOI, MN Karibasavana Gowda, who oversees legislature security, issued a written warning to the state government on the morning of the event. In a letter addressed to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Gowda cautioned against holding a felicitation at the Vidhana Soudha due to anticipated large crowds and insufficient police deployment. 'RCB has a fan following nationwide and lakhs of cricket fans will come to Vidhana Soudha if we organise a programme on the grand steps. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobust arrangements will be a problem,' the officer wrote. This fresh revelation now puts further pressure on the state govt, which is already in the eye of a storm for allegedly prioritising optics over public safety. Fallout and resignations The revelation has intensified public scrutiny of the Karnataka government, which is already facing criticism for allegedly prioritising optics over safety during the celebrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo On Saturday, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced that it had accepted the resignations of two of its senior officials—Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer E S Jairam—who stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the tragedy. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by KSCA president Raghuram Bhat. 'They placed a letter of resignation in front of the committee, which was accepted after acknowledging the work they have done over the last two and half years,' Bhat told reporters. While Bhat did not disclose the names of interim replacements, sources said MS Vinay and Manjunatha Raju are the frontrunners for the roles. The current managing committee's term ends on September 30, with elections due in October or November. Legal action and investigation An FIR has been registered against the KSCA in connection with the stampede. Bhat said the association would fully cooperate with ongoing investigations. 'It is a very delicate issue. When the appropriate time comes, I myself will call all of you and give detailed information,' he said, adding that some senior police officials had visited the KSCA office during the day as part of the investigation process. 'We have already informed the government and the honourable High Court that we will cooperate fully with the enquiry. We will never shy away from anything.' Bhat ruled out dissolving the entire managing committee despite mounting pressure. 'Nothing of the sort. The game must go on, and that is why the emergency meeting was held. Rest all is fine at the moment,' he said. Bengaluru stampede The stampede, which occurred as lakhs of cricket fans gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title win, left 11 dead and 75 injured. The incident triggered outrage and raised serious questions about event planning, crowd management, and safety oversight by both the state administration and KSCA.

‘I Want To Stay Here Too': Father Mourns Son's Death In Bengaluru Stampede

Last Updated: Four individuals have been arrested concerning the stampede, and five police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, have been suspended. A heart-wrenching video of a father mourning over his son's grave has brought the personal tragedies of the stampede to the forefront, where 11 people lost their lives and 47 were injured at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB's IPL victory celebrations turned chaotic. The incident occurred on Wednesday when people celebrated the RCB's victory in the Indian Premier League. In the video, a man, BT Lakshma, who is the father of 21-year-old Bhumik Lakshman, who died in the stampede, wails at his son's grave at their native village in Hassan district. 'What happened to my son should not happen to anyone," he says, lying down on the ground with his head pressed against the grave. 'The land I had bought for him is where his memorial has been built." Refusing to let go, Lakshman says, 'I don't want to go anywhere else now. I want to stay here too," as two other men approach him and help him to his feet. 'No father should have to face what I am facing," he laments. Bhumik, a final-year engineering student, was among the thousands of people who had gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday to celebrate and catch a glimpse of the players who had won RCB the IPL title after an 18-year wait. He was one of the 11 victims, including a 14-year-old girl, who tragically lost their lives in the stampede. A video of Lakshman mourning at his son's grave has gone viral. It has also been shared by the Karnataka BJP, which criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, accusing them of having 'murderous" intentions. 'Murderous CM @siddaramaiah sir, murderous DCM @DKShivakumar sir, if you had made up your mind, you could have taken a photo with your children and grandchildren in a luxurious hotel with a cup. But your insistence on taking a photo on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha has made 11 families wash their hands in tears every day. Can you give this father his son back?" the handle of the Karnataka unit of the BJP posted in Kannada on X. Earlier, after the tragedy, Lakshman had spoken to reporters and made a heartfelt appeal to the government, requesting that his son's body not be subjected to dissection during the post-mortem. 'I had only one son, and now I have lost him. Please give me his body, don't conduct a post-mortem and cut his body into pieces. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister may visit us (the victims of the tragedy), but they can't bring him back," he had said, fighting tears. Meanwhile, the Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of politicising the issue and said the Karnataka government is doing all it can to help the families of the victims and ensure that a tragedy like this doesn't occur again. Four individuals have been arrested concerning the stampede, and five police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, have been suspended. Additionally, the Karnataka government has taken disciplinary action against CM Siddaramaiah's Political Secretary, K Govindaraj, and the state intelligence department chief, dismissing them from their positions. India can 'easily replace' Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's skills: Ponting cuts through emotions with no-nonsense take

As India begin a new era in Test cricket without two of its biggest icons, Ricky Ponting has weighed in on the transition, offering both reassurance and perspective. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli now retired from the longest format, all eyes turn to a younger leadership core led by Shubman Gill, as India prepares to take on England in a five-match series starting June 20 at Headingley. Ponting, who has watched Indian cricket evolve closely through the IPL, believes India are better equipped than most nations to absorb the loss of such monumental players. 'It's always very difficult to replace players like that who have been around for so long and have played so much Test cricket. But if any country can do it quickly, it's India because of the young talent they have," Ponting said on The ICC Review. The former Australian captain pointed to the Indian talent pipeline that has delivered consistently in recent years. 'I've seen it firsthand over the last 10 years in the IPL, and we've witnessed the emergence of players like (Yashasvi) Jaiswal who have transitioned to international cricket with India and performed well almost immediately,' he added. Ponting acknowledged that while talent may not be lacking, the loss of experience will be the true test for the side. 'While replacing the skill is one aspect, which I believe India can do relatively easily, the experience is the key element that will be missing. Even with a young captain like Shubman Gill, they will still have some experienced players like KL Rahul and Bumrah around,' he said. 'In a rebuilding phase, I think India can handle it better than most other teams,' Ponting concluded. Shubman Gill, who takes over the captaincy in what is one of the toughest assignments in world cricket, remained composed when asked about the absence of Kohli and Rohit. 'Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are seasoned players who have secured many victories for us. It is always challenging to replace such talent, but our team has a good blend of youth and experience,' Gill said during the pre-departure press conference. 'This situation does not add extra pressure because our team is always ready to handle stress and knows how to win in such circumstances," he added.
