Lawson, Rodriguez earn Cape Cod League All-Star nods

USA Today19-07-2025
The Florida Gators always seem to have at least one player break out over the summer in the Cape Cod League. This year is no exception. In fact, they doubled their pleasure this time around.
Last year, it was Jake Clemente who earned the All-Star nod and started the spring as a member of the weekend rotation. This year, infielder Brendan Lawson and right-hander Christian Rodriguez are participating in the event on Jul 19 at 4:05 p.m. ET at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth, Mass. Lawson will also compete in the home run derby at 2:30 p.m. ahead of the All-Star Game.
INF Brendan Lawson
Lawson put together an All-SEC Freshman Team spring, slashing .317/.417/.522 with 71 hits and 10 home runs. He also showed a mature eye at the plate, walking in 12.2% of his plate appearances while striking out in just 20.7%. With numbers like that, Lawson came into the summer with one of the highest ceilings in the league.
He joined the Brewster Whitecaps midway through the season and "continues to barrel the ball consistently," according to Joe Healy of D1Baseball. Lawson is slashing .344/.475/.719 with three home runs over 10 games. He's walked as much as he's struck out, with seven each, and the Whitecaps are using him at third base most of the time, which could signal a position change for the former shortstop. Florida needs help on the left side of the infield after losing Bobby Boser and Colby Shelton to the draft.
RHP Christian Rodriguez
Rodriguez was solid with a 5.32 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 22 appearances as a redshirt freshman in the spring. His fastball is still ramping up from Tommy John surgery that kept him out all of the 2024 campaign, but the "Bugs Bunny changeup" with a 15-mph difference in velocity still baffles hitters. His slider is also working better, coming in the 76-79 mph range as well.
Rodriguez has a 1.35 ERA with 0.90 WHIP and 13 strikeouts over 13 1/3 innings for the Harwich Mariners this summer. He's only walked four batters and routinely gets out of innings with 15 or fewer pitches. Healy described Rodriguez as "utterly dominant this summer," and he looks like a strong option to replace his former high school teammate, Clemente, in the closer role.
Other Gators on the Cape
Billy Barlow, Blake Cyr and Matthew Jenkins are with Lawson on the Whitecaps. Barlow has made three starts for Brewster, compiling a 2.70 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 13 1/3 innings. He's struck out 16 and walked just two, although Barlow has hit three batters.
Cyr is slashing .308/.357/.487 with a home run. He still needs to tone down the aggression at the plate, striking out 11 times to just two walks over about 40 plate appearances. Jenkins is struggling, giving up 11 earned runs over four appearances (two total innings). The command isn't there with four walks and two strikeouts.
Ashton Wilson is with the Falmouth Commodores, hitting .206 with 16 strikeouts through 10 games. Luke McNeillie has a 5.68 ERA through 12 2/3 innings with Harwich. His 14 strikeouts are good, but his eight walks are not. Jacksonville center field transfer Jaden Bastian is hitting .100 through 30 at-bats for the Orleans Firebirds, but his elite eye is showing with nearly as many walks (9) as strikeouts (10).
Caden McDonald, Landon Stripling and Hayden Yost all play for the Wareham Gateman. McDonald is thriving in a two-way role, slashing .333/.464/.533 with three homers at the plate and maintaining a 4.32 ERA as a hybrid starter-reliever on the mound. McDonald could be considered an All-Star snub given his numbers. He's thrown 16 2/3 innings and is north of 50 plate appearances on the summer, so there's consistency to consider here, too.
Stripling is playing a lot of third base for Wareham, but his bat is struggling with just five hits through 35 at-bats. Yost isn't getting a ton of hits either, but he's playing the most of any Gator mentioned so far with 61 at-bats over 23 games. His .197 average is on the wrong side of the Mendoza line, and his strikeout (21) and walk (7) numbers aren't anything special. Still, he's outperforming Bastian, which could end up as a position battle through fall.

Fever Star Caitlin Clark's Projected Return Date Revealed by ESPN

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Indiana Fever have suffered through a rough start to the 2025 WNBA season compared to what had been expected from them. Caitlin Clark has suffered the same fate thanks to multiple different injury issues. Even now, Clark remains out due to injuring her groin once again just before the All-Star break. She has only played in 13 games this season of the 25 the Fever have played as a team. As of right now, the team has not given any timetable for a potential return to the court form Clark. Read more: Fever's Caitlin Clark Breaks Another Record Without Playing a Minute "The team can confirm that no additional injuries or damage were discovered through the evaluations," the statement read. "Clark will continue working with the Fever medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for Clark's return, and no additional details will be provided at this time. Any further updates will be shared as they become available." Despite there being no official timeline for Clark to return to the court, ESPN has revealed when it believes she'll be back and playing for the Fever again. On their WNBA injuries page, ESPN has listed August 12 as a potential return date for Clark. If that does end up becoming accurate, Clark would make her return against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings at home. Throughout the 13 games she has been able to play this season, Clark has seen her numbers decrease. That should be expected though, as she has been playing through nagging injury issues. Read more: Sky Coach Sends Message as Angel Reese Faces Threat of Suspension In the 13 games she has played, Clark has averaged 16.5 points per game to go along with 8.8 assists, five rebounds, and 1.6 steals. She has also shot 36.7 percent from the floor and has connected on 27.9 percent of her three-point attempts. Obviously, it hasn't been the MVP-caliber season that many fans and analysts were expecting from Clark. The hope is simply that she can get healthy and back on the court to help Indiana pursue a run in the playoffs. Expect to hear more about the Fever superstar in the near future. For now, ESPN's projected return date gives Indiana fans hope. Make sure to follow Newsweek Sports for all Indiana Fever and WNBA news and updates.

College World Series home run record-holder, former Gator Ty Evans retires from baseball

A storied baseball career came to an end for former Florida Gators outfielder Ty Evans. On Saturday, the 22-year-old from Winter Haven, Florida, decided it was time to explore other avenues in life, announcing his decision to hang up the cleats on his social media account. Having used up his collegiate eligibility while going unselected in the most recent draft, the young man finally reached the end of his road. "Gator Nation, thank you for the four most amazing years of my life. I spent my childhood dreaming of playing Division I baseball, and being able to play at the University of Florida has made that dream come true," Evans' social media post begins. "Being able to wear the orange and blue is something that I will cherish forever. The support that I have gotten from all of you over my time here has been a true blessing. I wouldn't trade any of these moments for the world." He continues, "To the staff, I can't thank you all enough for everything that y'all have done for me. You guys helped me not only become a better baseball player, but also a better man. Through the ups and downs, y'all stuck with me through it all, and I am forever grateful for that. "To my teammates, it has been a blessing to play with you all over the last four years. I couldn't imagine going through the grind with any other group of guys. I can't thank y'all enough for all of the amazing memories and for the life-long friendships that were made. "With that being said, I have decided to move on from my playing career. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have started and finished my career at the University of Florida. Words can't express what this place has meant to my family and me. I can truly say that I gave everything I had to this program and am leaving with no regrets. It's been one hell of a ride." Ty Evans' accomplishments at Florida Prior to his arrival in Gainesville, Evans was drafted out of Lakeland Christian School by the Atlanta Braves in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. His decision to enroll in college rather than starting his professional career in the minor leagues proved to be fortuitous for the Gators. Evans primarily played right field, batting .270 with 31 home runs and 128 RBIs over the course of his four-year career, which stretched across 174 total appearances. He played in 49 games during his sophomore campaign and hit a record five home runs while making the Men's College World Series All-Tournament Team at the 2023 CWS, which foreshadowed his breakout in 2024. For his junior season, Evans once again appeared in 49 matchups, batting a career-high .316 while also slashing a .406 on-base percentage and a .580 slugging percentage, adding up to a robust .987 OPS. He tallied 61 hits, 13 home runs, 10 doubles, 44 runs scored and 43 runs batted in. Unfortunately, an arm injury in the 2024 MCWS ended his breakout effort and may have contributed to his senior decline. In 2025, Evans played in 41 games but saw his slash line regress to .263/.322/.451, though he did set his career high in doubles with 11. Cowboys sign tight end Jake Ferguson to a 4-year, $52 million extension

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension Sunday. The deal includes a $12 million signing bonus. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Ferguson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He had 59 catches for 494 yards but did not have a touchdown reception last season. The previous year, he posted career highs with 71 catches for 761 yards and five TDs. Ferguson dealt with knee and concussion issues last year but still started 14 games. This deal comes as two-time All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons remains in negotiations for his own extension, entering the final season of his rookie deal. Parsons said recently he had not seen much progress in those talks. ___
