Lawson, Rodriguez earn Cape Cod League All-Star nods

USA Today6 days ago
The Florida Gators always seem to have at least one player break out over the summer in the Cape Cod League. This year is no exception. In fact, they doubled their pleasure this time around.
Last year, it was Jake Clemente who earned the All-Star nod and started the spring as a member of the weekend rotation. This year, infielder Brendan Lawson and right-hander Christian Rodriguez are participating in the event on Jul 19 at 4:05 p.m. ET at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth, Mass. Lawson will also compete in the home run derby at 2:30 p.m. ahead of the All-Star Game.
INF Brendan Lawson
Lawson put together an All-SEC Freshman Team spring, slashing .317/.417/.522 with 71 hits and 10 home runs. He also showed a mature eye at the plate, walking in 12.2% of his plate appearances while striking out in just 20.7%. With numbers like that, Lawson came into the summer with one of the highest ceilings in the league.
He joined the Brewster Whitecaps midway through the season and "continues to barrel the ball consistently," according to Joe Healy of D1Baseball. Lawson is slashing .344/.475/.719 with three home runs over 10 games. He's walked as much as he's struck out, with seven each, and the Whitecaps are using him at third base most of the time, which could signal a position change for the former shortstop. Florida needs help on the left side of the infield after losing Bobby Boser and Colby Shelton to the draft.
RHP Christian Rodriguez
Rodriguez was solid with a 5.32 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 22 appearances as a redshirt freshman in the spring. His fastball is still ramping up from Tommy John surgery that kept him out all of the 2024 campaign, but the "Bugs Bunny changeup" with a 15-mph difference in velocity still baffles hitters. His slider is also working better, coming in the 76-79 mph range as well.
Rodriguez has a 1.35 ERA with 0.90 WHIP and 13 strikeouts over 13 1/3 innings for the Harwich Mariners this summer. He's only walked four batters and routinely gets out of innings with 15 or fewer pitches. Healy described Rodriguez as "utterly dominant this summer," and he looks like a strong option to replace his former high school teammate, Clemente, in the closer role.
Other Gators on the Cape
Billy Barlow, Blake Cyr and Matthew Jenkins are with Lawson on the Whitecaps. Barlow has made three starts for Brewster, compiling a 2.70 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 13 1/3 innings. He's struck out 16 and walked just two, although Barlow has hit three batters.
Cyr is slashing .308/.357/.487 with a home run. He still needs to tone down the aggression at the plate, striking out 11 times to just two walks over about 40 plate appearances. Jenkins is struggling, giving up 11 earned runs over four appearances (two total innings). The command isn't there with four walks and two strikeouts.
Ashton Wilson is with the Falmouth Commodores, hitting .206 with 16 strikeouts through 10 games. Luke McNeillie has a 5.68 ERA through 12 2/3 innings with Harwich. His 14 strikeouts are good, but his eight walks are not. Jacksonville center field transfer Jaden Bastian is hitting .100 through 30 at-bats for the Orleans Firebirds, but his elite eye is showing with nearly as many walks (9) as strikeouts (10).
Caden McDonald, Landon Stripling and Hayden Yost all play for the Wareham Gateman. McDonald is thriving in a two-way role, slashing .333/.464/.533 with three homers at the plate and maintaining a 4.32 ERA as a hybrid starter-reliever on the mound. McDonald could be considered an All-Star snub given his numbers. He's thrown 16 2/3 innings and is north of 50 plate appearances on the summer, so there's consistency to consider here, too.
Stripling is playing a lot of third base for Wareham, but his bat is struggling with just five hits through 35 at-bats. Yost isn't getting a ton of hits either, but he's playing the most of any Gator mentioned so far with 61 at-bats over 23 games. His .197 average is on the wrong side of the Mendoza line, and his strikeout (21) and walk (7) numbers aren't anything special. Still, he's outperforming Bastian, which could end up as a position battle through fall.

NBC SPORTS FINALIZES GAME ANALYST TEAM AND ADDS FINAL PLAY-BY-PLAY VOICE FOR NBA COVERAGE BEGINNING THIS FALL

1986 No. 1 Pick Brad Daugherty, Five-Time NBA Champion Derek Fisher, and NBA Veterans Robbie Hummel, Austin Rivers, and Brian Scalabrine to Join NBC Sports' NBA Coverage as Game Analysts Michael Grady Joins as Play-by-Play Voice 2025-26 NBA Season Begins Oct. 21 on NBC and Peacock STAMFORD, Conn. – July 24, 2025 – NBC Sports finalized its NBA game analyst and play-by-play rosters today with the additions of analysts Brad Daugherty, Derek Fisher, Robbie Hummel, Austin Rivers, and Brian Scalabrine, and play-by-play voice Michael Grady. The 2025-26 NBA season begins on NBC and Peacock on Oct. 21. Daugherty, Fisher, Hummel, Rivers, and Scalabrine round out a game analyst roster for NBC Sports which also includes previously announced NBA veterans Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Grant Hill. Grady joins Mike Tirico, Noah Eagle, and Terry Gannon as NBC Sports' play-by-play voices for the NBA. This group will handle up to 100 regular season games -- including five games a week for portions of the season -- plus the playoffs. 'We're excited to introduce this group to NBA fans and can't wait for them to set up and break down games for viewers all season long,' said NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood. 'This team would win a lot of games on the court and now they have the opportunity to take their talents to NBC and Peacock.' Brad Daugherty, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, played nine seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he was a five-time NBA All-Star and had his No. 43 retired by the team. Daugherty had a storied college career at the University of North Carolina, playing two seasons alongside Michael Jordan and earning two first-team All-ACC selections and a second-team All-America selection. As a co-owner of Hyak Motorsports and stockcar enthusiast, Daugherty joined NBC Sports in 2020 as a NASCAR pre- and post-race analyst. A five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers (2000-2002, 2009-2010), Derek Fisher played 18 seasons in the NBA and appeared in 287 playoff games, second only to LeBron James on the all-time list. The No. 24 overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft out of Little Rock, Fisher played in eight NBA Finals (seven with the Lakers, one with the Oklahoma City Thunder). After retiring in 2014, Fisher spent time as the head coach of the New York Knicks and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. A two-time AP Honorable Mention All-American during an impressive career at Purdue (2007-2012), Robbie Hummel was selected in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft and played two seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since 2023, Hummel has been an analyst for NBC Sports' presentation of Big Ten men's basketball and served as a men's basketball analyst on NBCUniversal's Paris Olympic coverage. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft out of Duke, Austin Rivers played 11 seasons in the NBA, making the playoffs eight times. He spent his career with seven teams (New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves). Rivers' father is NBA champion-head coach Doc Rivers, who coached Austin for three-and-a-half seasons with the Clippers. Following his retirement in 2023, Rivers began his broadcasting career as a studio analyst for ESPN before joining NBC Sports in 2025 as a college basketball analyst. Rivers will occasionally work as an NBC Sports studio analyst as well. A second-round pick out of USC in the 2001 NBA Draft, Brian Scalabrine played 11 seasons in the NBA, primarily with the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics. During his career, he played in four NBA Finals, winning one in 2008 with the Celtics and becoming a city fan favorite. Since the 2020-21 NBA season, he has been NBC Sports Boston's primary game analyst for Celtics' games. He makes weekly appearances on the network's Celtics Insider show as well as other NBC Sports Boston programming throughout the year. Scalabrine will occasionally work as an NBC Sports studio analyst as well. Michael Grady has been the play-by-play voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Bally Sports North since the 2022-23 NBA season, which led him to ESPN's rotation of NBA play-by-play announcers at the start of the 2024-25 season. He has also called NBA games for TNT Sports. Grady began his career as the PA announcer at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the Indiana Pacers and Fever, and in 2017, began serving as a sideline reporter for the Brooklyn Nets on YES Network and started calling select games for the team in 2020. Grady will continue to call some games for the Timberwolves. The NBA returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock on Tuesday, Oct. 21, when the 2025-26 season tips off. Throughout the course of the season, NBC Sports will present up to 100 regular season NBA games -- including five games a week for portions of the season -- plus the playoffs. NBC and Peacock will present coverage on Tuesday nights beginning in October. After Sunday Night Football coverage concludes in 2026, NBC Sports will launch Sunday Night Basketball across NBC and Peacock. Peacock will also livestream national Monday night games starting Oct. 27. *** In July 2024, NBCUniversal and the NBA announced an 11-year agreement to present NBA and WNBA regular-season and playoff basketball games across numerous platforms beginning with the 2025-26 season. For more information on the agreement, click here. NBC Sports has already announced that Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Grant Hill will serve as game analysts; Carmelo Anthony and Vince Carter as studio analysts; Maria Taylor and Ahmed Fareed as studio hosts; and Mike Tirico, Noah Eagle, and Terry Gannon as play-by-play voices. Michael Jordan has been announced as a special contributor. Emmy Award-winning producer Frank DiGraci is NBC Sports' NBA coordinating producer. In a nod to its original era of NBA coverage from 1990-2002, NBC Sports is bringing back Roundball Rock, one of the most iconic and beloved theme songs in sports history, and will use an AI-generated voice of the late Jim Fagan, a longtime NBC Sports narrator whose voice was synonymous with its NBA coverage and promotion. Girls basketball recruiting: Offers rolling in for top junior, top-70 senior nearing decision, more

WESTFIELD – The AAU season is officially in the books, which means it's time to begin turning our attention to the upcoming high school girls basketball season. Let's get caught up with the latest recruiting news and commitments. Claire Larrison was (jokingly) hopeful she might avoid playing against Hannah Menser when Greensburg played Plainfield in a summer league game last month. Larrison had heard her IGB teammate and fellow 2027 prospect had been nursing an injury, but Menser was suited up and ready to go for their clash. "I was like, you're joking, right? Of course she played in our game," Larrison laughed. "Her shooting ability is crazy, how quickly she gets that shot off and the way it moves and spins — and she's so quick," Larrison continued. "Hannah's just such a great player." Menser's shot has been her calling card through two varsity seasons. A 5-8 guard and career 42% shooter (38% from 3), she averaged 17 points for the 17-win Quakers last season. She did this while averaging career-highs in assists (3.3), steals (2.9) and blocks (1.8), and a career-low in turnovers (1.7). "I've been looking to be more of a scorer and not just a shooter (this summer)," said Menser, who added Division I offers this offseason from Ball State, Bowling Green, Evansville and Purdue Fort Wayne. "Getting to my pull-up — that's one of my best shots, I just need to be able to get there. And I've been attacking more." The summer high school league also pushed Menser out of her comfort zone. Injuries to Abrielle Dugan (Plainfield's third-leading scorer) and Caroline Pugh forced her to become more of a vocal leader — a responsibility that doesn't necessarily come naturally for her. "I'm getting into it," Menser smiled. "It's been fun." Brooklynn Renn, ranked 70th nationally in her class by ESPN and fourth in the state by Prep Girls Hoops Indiana, will begin narrowing down her list and scheduling official visits after the AAU season, with plans of committing by the start of the upcoming high school season. "It will take some of the pressure and some of the stress off," said Renn, who picked up an offer from Kansas this week, adding it to a list which already included Cal, Clemson, Maryland, Marquette, Miami, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin, among others." I can play my senior year without worrying about it." A 6-3 forward and Indiana Junior All-Star, Renn fought through injury last season to average 15.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks (school-record 99) for the sectional runner-up Dragons. She shot 41% from the field, 36% from 3 and 71% at the line, and ranks second on the school's all-time rebounding list (715). Renn was tabbed to participate in the Girls Under Armour Association Future 60 event in June, but was unable to attend. Kamrah Banks recently announced her commitment to UCF. The 5-9 senior guard averaged 26.4 points on 54% shooting, 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.8 assists last season, according to MaxPreps. She averaged over 17 points, three assists and two steals as a freshman at Decatur Central, before transferring to Monteverde Academy for a year. Banks, who is nearing 1,000 career points entering the 2025-26 campaign, chose UCF over West Virginia, Kansas State, Kansas, BYU, Kentucky and Vanderbilt, among others. Vanessa Rosswurm, a key member of Norwell's Class 3A state championship team from a season ago, announced her commitment to Indiana Wesleyan. Rosswurm, a 5-8 Junior All-Star, averaged 22.4 points on 36% shooting, plus 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists this past season. She helped the Knights secure their first semistate championship since 1976-77 as a sophomore (finished runner-up to Gibson Southern). Norwell is set to move to 4A this season. A couple 2030 prospects are already beginning to draw high-D-I interest: ∎ Claire Stoops (Zionsville) has added offers from IU, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Michigan State and Iowa this summer. ∎ Quinn Sowder (Brownsburg) was recently offered by Purdue. She is dunking a toy basketball in her profile photo on X.
