Markets in twin cities buzz with Eid prep

Express Tribune2 days ago

The twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are abuzz with Eid preparations as shoppers flock to markets, malls, and shopping centres. The festive spirit is in full swing, with families, youth, and children eagerly searching for the best deals, turning the cities into a lively spectacle of colour, joy, and celebration.
The commercial hubs are bustling with activity as vendors display vibrant Eid collections, ranging from traditional attire to festive delicacies. Shopkeepers attract customers with special discounts, adding to the excitement and anticipation of the upcoming celebration.
This year, rising tailoring costs make off-the-rack outfits a practical choice, offering affordability and diverse fashion options. For many, these pre-stitched options strike the right balance between affordability and trendiness.
Inamur Rehman, a resident of Islamabad, while talking to the media, said, "It's overwhelming to witness such massive crowds yet encouraging for local businesses." he highlighted how ready-made garments have streamlined Eid shopping for many while stressing the need for more discounts.
"Shopkeepers should offer promotions to help more people celebrate Eid with ease," he said, adding that it's essential to support the underprivileged during this time. "As Muslims, we have a duty to remember and support those who are less fortunate," said Romana, a shopper from Rawalpindi.
"This year, I chose ready-to-wear clothes because of their variety and affordability," she said. "I found everything I needed, in line with the latest trends and traditional styles." She urged authorities and business owners to introduce more price cuts on Eid-related items. "If discounts are offered, lower-income families would be able to participate in the celebrations without financial strain," she added.
After spotting the crescent moon of Dhul Hijjah on coming Wednesday, the shopping frenzy is set to intensify as malls and bazaars extend hours to accommodate surging crowds.

Livestock sold by weight in Charsadda's village

As Eid-ul-Azha approaches, livestock markets across the country, including in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, are drawing large crowds. However, skyrocketing animal prices have made it increasingly difficult for the middle class to fulfill the ritual of sacrifice. In response to this challenge, traders in Nesata, a village in Charsadda district, have introduced an innovative pricing model — selling sacrificial animals based on weight. According to local sources, the rate for bulls is Rs900 per kilogram, while buffaloes are being sold at Rs680 per kilogram. This weight-based pricing model, known locally as 'wazan per sale', is proving to be cost-effective. Traders claim that buyers can save between Rs50,000 to Rs70,000 compared to conventional market prices. As a result, a significant number of people are flocking to Nesata to purchase animals after verifying their weight on a computerized scale. Sellers have installed digital weighing machines near the livestock markets, allowing buyers to get an accurate reading of the animal's weight before making a purchase. If a buyer finds the total price beyond their budget after the weighing, they are free to walk away - though they are required to pay a Rs100 fee for the weighing slip. The trend is gaining popularity, particularly among residents of Peshawar and nearby areas, who are now traveling to Nesata for more transparent and potentially economical livestock purchases. Located just two kilometers from the Charsadda Motorway Interchange, Nesata is fast becoming a hotspot for buyers seeking fairly priced sacrificial animals ahead of Eid. Meanwhile, with the disbursement of salaries to public and private sector employees, Eid shopping in the city has seen a significant surge. Markets are experiencing a dramatic increase in foot traffic, severely impacting the flow of traffic across major commercial areas. Alongside traditional Eid shopping, the purchase of sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha is also gaining momentum. On Saturday, both shopping malls and livestock markets across the city witnessed heavy crowds.

Six markets set up in Lahore for sale and purchase of animals

LAHORE: For the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals on Eid-ul-Azha, the Lahore district administration has made six designated cattle markets operational across the provincial capital, providing a well-organised and hygienic environment for buyers and sellers. One permanent cattle market has been set up at Shahpur Kanjran, while five temporary markets were established at Haveli Markaz near Spring Mill (Raiwind zone), Sports Complex near Adda Rakh Chabeel (Wahga zone), LDA City near Kana Kacha on Defence Road (Nishtar zone), Mouza Nain Sukh near Saggian Bridge (Ravi zone) and Burki Road near Paragon City (Cantonment zone). The initiative aims to ensure convenience and comfort for both traders and the general public through comprehensive on-ground arrangements, said the administration here on Saturday. To ensure quality service delivery, the Punjab Cattle Market Management Company is providing essential facilities, such as tents, fodder, toilets, mobile ATM units, complaint cells and information desks. Moreover, electricity, standby generators, and clean drinking water are also available at all market locations. The Punjab Police have been given the task to provide security in and around the markets, while the traffic police will manage vehicular flow. The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has been tasked with cleaning operations and debris removal, particularly from the Saggian site. To review the ongoing operations and assess the facilities being provided at the cattle markets, Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza visited Kacha Bakra Mandi. He was briefed by the Chief Officer of Metropolitan Corporation Lahore and the Assistant Commissioner of Nishtar Town on administrative measures in place to support the market's smooth functioning. During the visit, the DC personally inspected key facilities, including clean drinking water, sanitation services, animal shelters, and parking areas, and directed officials to further enhance service delivery. He instructed that any gaps be addressed promptly to ensure a seamless and efficient market experience for all visitors. The district administration has also directed the Punjab Cattle Market Management Company to ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services at all designated sites. These include access to clean water, proper drainage, shaded rest areas, and organised parking to prevent congestion and inconvenience. The DC emphasised the administration's commitment to maintaining high standards of service in all markets. He assured that the buying and selling of sacrificial animals would take place in a safe, accessible, and well-managed environment, in line with the city's broader public facilitation goals. Meanwhile, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 across the province in connection with Eid-ul-Azha, and a notification has been issued in this regard. Under Section 144, restrictions will be in effect from June 5 to June 11. According to the notification, burning the heads and feet of sacrificial animals (siri paaye) in public places has been prohibited during Eid. Swimming, bathing and boating in rivers, lakes, canals and dams are also banned. Section 144 has been enforced against dumping animal waste and offal into manholes, drains or canals, and against the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals at locations other than officially approved cattle markets. The public display of weapons and ammunition is also prohibited under this order. The notification further stated that these restrictions have been implemented to protect human lives, maintain peace, and ensure environmental cleanliness. These activities pose threats to public safety, health and create unrest among the population. Additionally, banned organisations will not be allowed to collect sacrificial animal hides during Eid. Only organisations registered with the Punjab Charity Commission will be permitted to collect hides. Authorities and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of these directives. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Sindh govt says will launch new mega projects in upcoming budget

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah convened cabinet meeting with ministers, advisors, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and relevant secretaries to deliberate on the province's budget proposals for the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26, a statement from the CM House said on Saturday. The meeting underscored the government's commitment to inclusive development, poverty alleviation, and sustainable progress in line with the directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, it added. Opening the session, Murad Shah said, 'I want to engage all cabinet members thoroughly in shaping the next budget to ensure it addresses the real needs of our people.' Cash withdrawals from banks: FBR proposes raise in WHT for non-filers The CM outlined the core focus areas of the new budget, emphasising water supply and drainage, solar energy expansion, education, healthcare, agriculture, and industrial growth. 'This year ((2024-25), we have not introduced any new schemes under the priority to complete ongoing projects,' he said. For the upcoming budget, he added, Bilawal Bhutto has issued instructions for launching new initiatives that 'bring tangible benefits to the people'. As per the CM House, the important highlights from the meeting included continued rehabilitation efforts for flood-affected communities, repair of schools and hospitals, and launching new mega projects through Public-Private Partnerships to boost infrastructure and services, strengthening social protection programmes aimed at eradicating poverty and increasing budget allocations for repair and maintenance, as well as upgrading hospital equipment and completion of transport projects in Karachi to improve urban mobility. Proposals given by the cabinet members included reducing non-development expenditures and empowering local governments to become financially self-reliant, introducing digital cash transfers with incentives to enhance social welfare delivery, expanding solid waste management and solar energy systems across the province, and constructing new bus stands in multiple districts to improve public transportation. Industrial raw materials: Proposals for duty cuts to be submitted to PM The CM also highlighted the importance of federal-provincial coordination, stating, 'We will finalise the budget based on the federal government's funding commitments (provincial share) and our provincial revenue targets to ensure fiscal responsibility and effectiveness.' 'After Eid, we will hold further meetings to finalise and approve the budget proposals. Our goal is to present a budget that is transparent, development-oriented, and focused on improving the lives of every Sindh resident,' he said.
