Asian under-23 champion Sumit got past Worlds bronze medallist Sadyk Lalaev 9-3 before pinning Korean Dahyun Kim and Kazakh Galym Kabdunassarov to enter the final. He lost to 63kg World champion and 60kg European champion Nihat Zahid Mammadali 5-1 in the title clash to settle for the silver.
After losing 6-1 to World and European champion Emin Sefershaev in his first bout, Ulaanbaatar Open champion Anil bounced back to beat two-time European medallist Moldovan Artium Deleanu 7-0 in repechage and Asian bronze medallist Uzbek Ikhtiyor Botirov 7-4 in the bronze medal contest.

India all set for a strong show at Asian Surfing C'ships
CHENNAI: The waves off the coast in Mahabalipuram are set to grace the wave-blades of top surfers as the week-long Asian Surfing Championships is set to kick-off on Sunday. The event is crucial as it serves as a qualifier to next year's Asian Games at Aichi Nagoya, Japan. Over 150 athletes from 20 Asian countries have landed here to prove their mettle as well as grab quotas for the Asian Games. India have already been secured two quotas last year and this event will give them an opportunity to grab some more. For Surfing Federation of India's (SFI) president Arun Vasu, this Asian meet is of a huge significance. Apart from overlooking the sport since 2012 (when the organisation was not even recognised by the sports ministry), organising this tournament, he reckons, is a big step towards matching the world standards, something he saw in the 2023 and 2024 Asian meets in Maldives. "When we travelled there, we saw how they maintained their standards in organising tournaments. It's an amazing opportunity for our Indian team because one, of course, to compete at such a (high) level and secondly, it's their home break," he added. Eight of the 12 Indian team athletes are from Tamil Nadu and have trained in the same waters that they are set to compete in. Senior national champions like Kishore Kumar and Kamali P are expected to put on a strong show.

World Table Tennis Championships: Indian men and women teams qualify for London 2026 WTTC
The Indian men's and women's table tennis teams have booked their places for the prestigious World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) in London after a stellar show at the 2025 South Asia Regional Championships held in Kathmandu. Only 16 coveted Asian quota spots were available per gender. Four regional champions from Central Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia, and West Asia secured direct qualification for the WTTC -- one of the most prestigious events in the international calendar. Both the Indian teams emerged undefeated in the five-nation round-robin format, reaffirming their supremacy in the South Asian region. The men's team comprising Akash Pal, Ronit Bhanja, Anirban Ghosh, P B Abhinand and Divyansh Srivastava defeated Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Maldives with identical 3-0 wins. The women's team, led by Krittwika Sinha, Selenadeepthi Selvakumar, Taneesha Kotecha, Sayali Wani, and Syndrela Das produced an equally commanding show to register comprehensive 3-0 victories over the same four opponents.

Archers Sahil Rajesh Jadhav, Shrey Bhardwaj say winning global gold medals ‘a test of focus and stamina'
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) Kolkata on Friday felicitated two upcoming archers who won gold medals in major international tournaments recently. NCOE trainee Sahil Rajesh Jadhav clinched gold and silver medals at the FISU World University Games in Germany last week, and Shrey Bhardwaj won a hattrick of golds at the World Police and Fire Games in the USA recently. The spotlight was on 24-year-old archer Jadhav, who won one of the only two gold medals India garnered at the World University Games held in Rhine-Ruhr from July 16-27. Jadhav won the gold medal in the men's individual compound event after eliminating Ajay Scott of Great Britain in a tight final (149-148). Maharashtra lad Jadhav also won the men's compound team silver after a closely-contested (232-231) tie versus Turkey. "The final was incredibly tense and every arrow counted," said Jadhav. "I just tried to stick to my process and what my coach, Haresh Kumar, taught me. Seeing the flag go up while on the podium is a moment I'll never forget. My coaches told me that winning the gold was important and am happy that I kept my concentration,' said Jadhav. The World University gold was his maiden international medal. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Shrey Bhardwaj achieved a rare sweep at the World Police and Fire Games held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA from June 27-July 4. Bhardwaj from Jamshedpur won the recurve gold in outdoor, 3D, and field archery categories. The 3D format is a unique category where archers have to figure out the targets in semi darkness. He joined SAI NCOE Kolkata in 2024. "Switching between three different formats is a real test of focus and stamina. To win all three is an amazing feeling. I'm proud to represent UP Police and the country, and it's a credit to the tough, consistent training we get at the NCOE in Kolkata," said Bhardwaj, who wanted to become a cricketer but later found his feet in archery. SAI Kolkata has traditionally produced top archers ever since Limba Ram grabbed headlines with his talent in the late Eighties. From a junior national champion to becoming Asian champion in 1992, Limba trained at Kolkata's SAI centre. Olympians Deepika Kumari, Atanu Das, Bombayla Devi et al have all trained here. "We are all incredibly proud of what Sahil and Shrey have accomplished," said Amar Jyoti, Regional Director-in-Charge at SAI NCOE Kolkata. 'Sahil and Shrey's success shows that this legacy is in good hands and reinforces our commitment to developing the next generation of champions. We see immense future potential here, and these wins will undoubtedly inspire our younger athletes who are starting their careers," added Amar Jyoti. Olympians Bombayla Devi and Mangal Singh Champia, who were present at the felicitation event, felt Indian archers have turned the corner and displayed the ability to be among the best in the world. Both Bombayla and Champia stressed the need for mental strength during pressure moments. Bombayla Devi, who participated in three Olympics, said, "It's inspiring to see young archers rising to the occasion and winning big for India." The 2008 Olympian Champia, a multiple times World Cup gold medallist, added, "They've shown the kind of discipline and skill that defines champions. We're proud of them."
