DePaul partners with Spire Motorsports ahead of NASCAR Chicago Street Race
DePaul University has partnered with Spire Motorsports for the weekend's events as the main sponsor of the No. 71 Chevrolet ZL1. DePaul's colors will be on the car, driver and pit-crew gear and pit-stop signage, and fans can buy Blue Demons-themed gear before the race.
Piloting the DePaul Chevy will be Michael McDowell, who joined Spire this season. The Glendale, Ariz., native is a 17-year veteran with 518 starts. That includes a victory in the 2021 Daytona 500, three top-five finishes at Talladega and starts in all three of NASCAR's national series (Cup, Xfinity and Truck).
'It's always exciting when you can bring somebody into the sport that you know hasn't been there (before) and bring a new design and a fresh look,' McDowell said. 'You're going to have some fans and you're going to have some support immediately. It's been a great response.
'I've had a lot of people in particular comment about the paint scheme, how well it looks, and (they're) excited to see it on track. The paint scheme turned out nice; the colors look great.'
DePaul's NASCAR partnership is a way to promote the school beyond Chicago.
'Partnering with Spire Motorsports for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race allows us to spotlight DePaul on a national stage while embracing a global event in our own backyard,' athletic director DeWayne Peevy said in a press release. 'This collaboration will extend into our classrooms this fall, offering our students a hands-on look at the business and science behind professional racing. It's the perfect example of how we're using sports to elevate our visibility and create real-world learning experiences for our students.'
DePaul's School of Hospitality and Sports Business introduced a NASCAR-related course this summer, titled HSB 198: A NASCAR Experience. Students created and implemented designs for the college tailgate that will be at Turn 7 of the street race. McDowell will make virtual appearances in classes in the coming weeks.
Along with an offered NASCAR internship program, DePaul students can get tickets at 20% off for the street race.
'One thing that I've learned over the last few weeks is that DePaul is a household brand that people know, especially in (Chicago) and in the country,' McDowell said. 'It's cool to have their athletic fan base join ours.'
The best-case scenario for the partnership is the Demonmobile — name is still in the workshop — taking the checkered flag. McDowell called road courses a 'strong suit' and his 2023 win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course is proof. He led the race for 54 laps and narrowly beat Chase Elliott for his second Cup Series victory.
'We know that's an opportunity for us to win and to run up front,' McDowell said. 'The excitement is there for sure, and you feel the pressure of trying to get yourself locked into the playoffs and trying to get a win. Chicago is an opportunity for us to do that.'

Carson Hocevar Addresses Josh Berry Spinning Him Out at Sonoma Raceway
Carson Hocevar has caused a few wrecks and spins in his second full season in the NASCAR Cup Series, angering fellow drivers and putting a target on his back. While he expected to eventually be on the receiving end, he didn't see the incident with Josh Berry coming. A day after being taken out by Berry at Sonoma Raceway, Hocevar reacted during his Twitch stream on Monday night, responding to the incident that cost him a strong finish in the Toyota/Save Mart 350. 'Why did I get dumped yesterday? I don't know, I didn't do anything. I was just like, 'Man, of all people to wreck me. Thought it would be somebody like, I had it coming. I don't know what I did. It's just like, 'Well, s***.' And through strategy, we get to fifth and then I wreck. It's just like, 'Ah, whatever.' But it's just racing, man. Just racing. It is what it is. I like full-contact sport. So, it's just like. Well f*** yeah, man. Let's get it on. That's what I've been dying for. I've been giving some and I get some, so it's like, 'C'mon, let's go.' I don't why it was that corner or what I did.' It allowed most of the field to get by the No. 77, dropping him outside the top 30. He finished the day in 32nd place. Related: NASCAR standings, see where Carson Hocevar sits in playoff picture As a result, Hocevar finished the day with just five points instead of racking up 25 or more points, with only six races left in the regular season. The lost points mean that, rather than being less than 70 points behind Bubba Wallace, Hocevar is now 96 points back of the final playoff spot and even further behind Alex Bowman and Chris Buescher. Advertisement To his credit, Hocevar fully accepts that his aggressive driving style invites situations like this—something other drivers have said he must acknowledge if he's not going to change how he races. Ironically, his reaction to Berry spinning him is likely similar to how some of his peers felt when they were taken out by Hocevar. Related Headlines

Commanders announce retirement of Art Monk's No. 81 in touching video
Honoring greatness on November 2🔗 Washington Commanders managing partner Josh Harris has done it again. On Tuesday, the Commanders announced they are retiring legendary wide receiver Art Monk's No. 81 jersey. Monk will be honored during the Week 9 Sunday night game against the Seattle Seahawks, which takes place on Nov. 2. A contingent led by Harris, team executive and Redskins legend Doug Williams, team president Mark Clouse, and some of Monk's former teammates, such as Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders, arrived at Monk's home to surprise him. Washington's contingent and Monk's family members all wore No. 81 burgundy t-shirts with Monk's number on the back. Here's the touching tribute video: One number. Forever Monk's number 81 will officially be retired this season Monk was a first-round pick by Washington out of Syracuse in the 1980 NFL draft. He played his first 14 seasons with the Redskins, before finishing his career with stints in New York (Jets) and Philadelphia. Monk finished with 940 career receptions, 12,721 receiving yards, 68 touchdowns, was a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection. Monk was also a part of three Super Bowl championship teams. At the time of his retirement, Monk was the NFL's all-time career leader in receptions. While his numbers have since been eclipsed multiple times, Monk's greatness is often overlooked. In fact, the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee foolishly made him wait for years to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio. When he finally made it, Monk was inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside fellow Redskins legend Darrell Green.
