BSE's Asia Index expands offerings with four new factor-based indices

Asia Index, a subsidiary of BSE, on Tuesday launched four factor-based indices as part of its ongoing revival efforts over the past year.
The company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of BSE in June last year after the exchange bought the stake previously held by S&P Dow Jones Indices.
The indices launched include BSE 500 Enhanced Value 50, BSE 500 Low Volatility 50, BSE 500 Momentum 50, and BSE 500 Quality 50. According to the company, a key differentiator compared to similar offerings from NSE Indices is the frequency of rebalancing. The BSE indices will be rebalanced on a quarter-wise basis.
'The introduction of quarterly reconstitution schedule in our factor indices will enable factor signals to capture the most recent financial and stock price data,' said Ashutosh Singh, managing director and chief executive officer of Asia Index.

Since the change in ownership, it has intensified its focus on index development. In FY25, it unveiled 20 indices, including differentiated offerings such as the BSE 1000. The company is aiming to recover lost ground after lagging behind NSE Indices in index creation during the final five years of joint ownership.
'In terms of market share, we are way below. The priority is to look at our product profile and launch indices based on discussions with mutual funds. This year, our focus is going to be on launching a lot more indices,' Singh added.

Teachers protest land transfer, urge Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to withdraw SC plea

KULLU: The teachers' association of Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, has urged Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to withdraw a Special Leave Petition (SLP) the state govt recently filed in the Supreme Court . This petition challenges the stay order by the Himachal Pradesh High Court on the transfer of 112 hectares of university land to the Tourism Department. In a letter to the CM, the Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University Teachers' Association (HPAUTA), which has been opposing the land transfer for the proposed tourism village, stated that this project by the state govt would jeopardise agricultural education and research in this premium agricultural university. According to the Association, the govt should withdraw the SLP so that the university's academic, research, and extension work is not adversely affected. Professor Janardan Singh, the Secretary of HPAUTA, told TOI that the university land is meant solely for academic and research purposes, not for commercial use. 'The land transfer would not only halt major ongoing research projects, including those funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), but also hinder the university's future expansion as no land would be left for new colleges, departments, or student facilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 日本の高収入建設職種(2025年):一覧を見る 建設作業員 | 検索広告 Undo The proposed tourism village project would also weaken the academic mission of the agricultural university,' said Prof Singh. He mentioned that the state govt's move to approach the SC also raised several questions about its intent. 'Why is the govt in such a hurry to establish a tourism village within the university campus when several hectares of land under various departments of the Himachal Pradesh govt lie unused? The state govt is unnecessarily putting the future of a premium institute of learning at risk,' added Prof Singh. Despite protests and stiff opposition from teachers and students, the state govt last year transferred 112 hectares of university land to the Tourism Department for developing its proposed tourism village. Challenging the state govt's land transfer, the HPAUTA approached the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The HC in August last year put a stay on the land transfer, and challenging the stay order, the state govt filed an SLP in the SC in March this year. Established in 1978, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, in Kangra district was renamed Chaudhary Sarvan Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University in 2001. The university was awarded 14th rank among the Indian agriculture universities by the ICAR in 2019. So far, the university released 179 improved varieties of different crops for different regions of the state and is the first in the country to establish an Advanced Centre on Nature Farming. There are four constituent colleges of the university which impart education to over 2000 students from eight countries and 15 Indian states. If the transfer of the 112 hectares goes through, the university will be left with 277 hectares of land in its Palampur campus, and according to teachers, the university would require more land for expansion in the near future. 'The university land has been squeezed whereas it needs to be expanded and new programmes are required to be started as per the new education policy. There is an urgent need to establish new colleges including the College of Agricultural Engineering, College of Fisheries, College of Agricultural Business Management, College of Environmental Sciences, etc. Instead of providing more land to the university, the state govt is taking away whatever little it has got,' said a university teacher, who didn't want to be named. The state govt announced in November 2023 to set up a tourism village in Kangra district to promote 'local art and culture and to create employment opportunities for the youth.'

‘Buy right, sell after…': Here's Reddit man's story of purchasing JSW shares in 1990s — Here's its worth today

A stock market investor and social media user named Sourav Dutta, in his platform X post on Saturday, 7 June 2025, shared a story of a Reddit man, who inherited JSW Steel shares, which are currently worth nearly ₹ 80 crore. In the post, Sourav Dutta cited a Reddit man who allegedly inherited JSW Steel shares from his father. The father reportedly purchased the stocks in 1990 for ₹ 1 lakh. Dutta said that now, as of the current market value, those shares are worth nearly ₹ 80 crore. 'Guy on Reddit discovered JSW shares bought by his dad in the 1990s for ₹ 1L (lakh),' said Dutta in his post. 'Worth ₹ 80 Cr (crore) today,' he said. The market investors highlighted the importance of purchasing a share at the correct time, holding it for the long term, and eventually selling it for a massive profit. 'Power of buy right, sell after 30 yrs,' said Dutta in his post on X. People on the social media platform X also agreed with Sourav Dutta's stance on buying and holding shares for a longer period for higher gains, compared to a shorter profit-booking strategy. 'Don't be in a rush to sell good businesses. If fundamentals are intact, let time do the heavy lifting. This is not just investing, this is legacy creation,' said a platform X account named @marketanalogy. 'Power of buy and forget?!' questioned a platform X user named @dhanapal13, to which Dutta clarified that people should 'Buy and Track' instead. Another user named Anhad Arora said, 'People don't realise how stock splits, bonuses and dividends add up overtime, it's magical.' JSW Steel shares closed 3.70 per cent higher at ₹ 1,004.50 after Friday's stock market session, compared to ₹ 968.65 at the previous market close. Since their listing in the Indian stock market in 1996, the Iron and Steel manufacturers' shares have given stock market investors a total of 4,865 per cent returns on their investment. The shares were trading under ₹ 20 apiece after their listing on the BSE in 1996. JSW Steel shares have given investors more than 430 per cent returns in the last five years and 9.70 per cent in the last one-year period. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the shares have gained over 10 per cent in 2025, and are trading 2.56 per cent higher in the last five stock market sessions. Consumer forum orders refund after Covid-19 disrupts travel plans

In a classic case of vacation plans gone viral, the Ghaziabad Consumer Forum has ruled in favor of Ishan Pratap Singh, a traveler who was forced to cancel a family trip to the Maldives in 2021 after testing positive for Covid-19—just a day before departure, reported TOI. Singh had booked the dream getaway from Mumbai through Ineedtrip , a Ghaziabad-based travel agency, coughing up a hefty Rs 1.9 lakh as an advance (and even taking a Rs 1.4 lakh loan to fund it). But when he tested positive via an RT-PCR on March 12, he requested the agency to reschedule the trip originally planned for March 13–17, as per the TOI report. Though he tried to shuffle the dates—first aiming for May, then April, and finally November 2021—he was met with repeated refusals. The agency cited expiry of certain travel packages and warned of forfeiture by the partner hotel after September. Despite these pandemic-related hurdles and Singh's continued EMI payments for the loan, Ineedtrip refused to refund the money. They also skipped responding to the consumer forum's notices. Unimpressed, forum members Praveen Kumar Jain and RP Singh passed an ex parte order, declaring Ineedtrip's actions a clear 'deficiency in service' under the Consumer Protection Act. Live Events Now, the travel agency must refund the Rs 1.9 lakh within 45 days, plus 6% interest from the date of the order until the amount is paid. To top it off, they've been ordered to shell out Rs 5,000 more for Singh's legal costs and mental agony. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
