Promethea review – a stylishly creepy supernatural drama you'll want to binge
Forgive me. I am consumed by this puzzle. The success of a French drama can be measured by how successfully the official narrative mystery distracts me from the conundrum, and here the new six-part series Promethea does just fine.
We begin with married couple the Lassets – Caroline (Marie-Josée Croze), a headteacher, and Charles (Thomas Jouannet), a doctor – hitting something that dashes out of the woods as they are driving home on a dark, rainy night. It turns out to be a teenage girl (played by Fantine Harduin) with neither a stitch of clothing nor a scratch on her. She remembers nothing about where she comes from or who she is, except for her name, Prométhée. They take her to hospital where she is examined by doctors and questioned by the police and, later by Charles's colleague, psychoanalyst Marie (Odile Vuillemin). No concerned parents have reported her missing and the only clue to her identity is a tattoo on her wrist of a jellyfish.
The police, led by the permanently vaping officer Elise (Camille Lou), have been investigating the brutal murder two months previously of a teenage girl called Lea, but have come up with nothing. This changes when Prométhée starts drawing sketches that seem to match photos taken of the crime scene and having flashbacks to bloody horrors that suggest much but obviously won't resolve into solid information until we have had a few more episodes of fun with them.
The Lassets' daughter was killed in a motorcycle accident two years before, and the sense of pervasive grief is heartbreakingly shown, not least in their inadvertent emotional neglect of their sweet son, Hugo (Aymeric Fougeron). They are all immured by misery and Hugo doesn't resent his parents for their behaviour, but takes what comfort he can in his girlfriend, Vanessa (Margot Heckmann). When Prométhée moves in with the Lassets to avoid going into foster care, the emotional stakes increase in intensity and complexity.
Clues and connections begin to take shape as everyone hares off on their own private investigations. Charles would like to know why there is blood on the car windscreen, but no visible injury to the girl herself. And it's hard not to agree that this is a fundamental question that needs to be answered. He sends a blood sample to the lab for testing. Prométhée tracks down the house that she keeps drawing from memory flashbacks and the jellyfish tattoo artist who may know who she is.
Vanessa is Elise's sister, which entwines the two families and plot lines from the start. Then Prométhée starts scrabbling in Lea's garden and unearths a box of photos that one may assume the teenage girl did not intend her parents to see, but which at last provide a lead for Elise and her team. It is almost enough( along with Marie's icy, watchful presence and her volunteered information that she has brittle bone disease – the equivalent of ostentatiously placing a gun on a Chekovian mantlepiece) without the suggestion of the supernatural that hardens into near-certainty as Prométhée begins to reveal unexpected physical powers. By this time, we are along for the stylishly creepy ride, so let's enjoy it.
There is nothing wonderfully new or innovative here, but it is a nicely packaged and paced six hours of solid entertainment. It is a flavoursome binge rather than something to be lingered over and savoured, but who doesn't have an appetite for that? And the sorrows of the two sets of parents add enough heft to keep it from being a simple potboiler, though with everything apart from their grief, tidy resolution is promised, every loose end tied up. Apart, of course, from that mystery of how they look so ordinary and so good all the time.
Promethea launches on Channel 4 on Sunday and is available from streaming now.

Prince Andrew linked to FOURTH man accused of sex with teenage girls
Jeffrey Epstein's long-term butler has told how Prince Andrew enjoyed afternoon tea in Saint-Tropez with his boss and disgraced British photographer David Hamilton Prince Andrew socialised with a fourth man accused of having sex with young teenage girls, it has been claimed. Andrew 's connections to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, suspected sex trafficker Jean-Luc Brunel and fashion mogul Peter Nygard – jailed for sexually assaulting four women including a girl aged 16 – are well reported. And now Epstein's long-term butler has told how Andrew enjoyed afternoon tea in Saint-Tropez with his boss and disgraced British photographer David Hamilton. Hamilton, known for his nude images of young girls, took his own life in Paris in 2016, shortly after four women alleged he had raped them while they were in their early teens. A victim of Epstein said: 'Andrew's repeated associations with men accused of exploiting minors raise serious questions about his judgment and the company he keeps.' Speaking for the first time, Valdson Vieira Cotrin, who was in service to billionaire Epstein in the French capital for 18 years, said Andrew and Hamilton 'came for tea' at a property in Saint-Tropez in the early 2000s. Hamilton, 82, killed himself weeks after prominent French TV presenter Flavie Flament said he had raped her when she was 13. Other women levelled similar accusations at him, which he denied. He was the third convicted or suspected paedophile to die by suicide after being accused of underage sexual abuse who has also been linked to Andrew. As well as Epstein, who was found guilty of child sex charges and died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting another trial for underage sex trafficking, Brunel also killed himself. The modelling agent, a close pal of Epstein's, was found hanged in his cell in Paris in 2022. The 76-year-old was being investigated on suspicion of the rape of minors and trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation. It was claimed he spent time on Epstein's private island with the prince. Canadian fashion mogul Nyard, 84, is still alive. Last year he was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting four women, including a girl aged 16. Nygard lured young women with false modelling promises before assaulting them, his trial heard. According to reports, Andrew and ex-wife Fergie visited Nygard in 2000 at his estate in the Bahamas, which had a helipad and casino. Meanwhile, butler Cotrin told the Telegraph he met Andrew at Epstein's flat in Paris and in New York and that the prince and the billionaire paedophile dined together 'five or six' times at Epstein's Paris townhouse, always accompanied by taxpayer-funded bodyguards. There is no evidence that Prince Andrew was aware of any illicit activity by these four men. However, the claims deepen the scrutiny surrounding his links with people later convicted or credibly accused of heinous sexual offences. Epstein's victim said: 'The pattern of powerful men surrounding themselves with accused abusers and then distancing themselves while victims suffer is all too familiar. 'Prince Andrew's ties to these men should not be ignored, and victims deserve answers and justice.'

I need £90k or me & my kids'll be evicted & I'm begging strangers to help -I may be deluded, but what choice do I have?
A MUM has claimed that she needs to raise £90,000 or she and her children will be evicted from their home. Single mum Rhiannon says she has 806 days to make the mammoth sum, and is asking strangers on the internet for their help. 2 2 Taking to TikTok, Rhiannon admitted that her plan does seem "delusional" and "far fetched". "But I feel like if I don't even try to raise the money then I'm letting my boys down", she said. The mum does not give further details as to why she believes she will be evicted Rhiannon's plan is to post a TikTok video every day until September 1st 2027, when the 806 days is up. As well as documenting her journey, she hopes to make money from the TikTok Creator Fund, which pays TikTokers for the content they create, dependent on how many likes and views they get. This means that if strangers help her out by interacting with her TikTok videos, they can help her to make cash. "I would never ask for any money, but I am going to ask for your engagement", she said. To reach her goal, Rhiannon needs to make £111.66 every day. "And yes that does sound impossible, even for me", the ambitious mum said. As well as using the Creator Fund, Rhiannon also plans to sell some of her belongings, and look for some "side hustles." "I know this is unrealistic and probably not going to happen, but I at least have to try", she said. Rhiannon is now on day 53 of her journey, and has set up a donation page where people can "buy a brick" which has had 454 supporters so far. Her video, posted to the account (alittlebitofrhi) has gone viral, racking up over 959,000 views on the video sharing platform. One person said: "Selling on Vinted has made me loads! "Commenting to help." A second person said: "Commenting so you can get paid."
