What's Next for the Los Angeles Kings?

Yahoo04-05-2025

By any objective measure, the Los Angeles Kings had a very good regular season. They tied a franchise record with 48 wins and set a new record for home wins at 31. LA's .640% points percentage is the second-best mark in team history and goalie Darcy Kuemper posted a stellar campaign, culminating in a Vezina Trophy nomination.
But let's face it. Nobody cares about any of that because the Kings failed to make it past the Edmonton Oilers for the fourth straight year. Regular season accomplishments are quickly forgotten once the battle for Lord Stanley's Cup begins and LA's loyal fan base is certainly within its rights to want change after yet another playoff fiasco.
On the Blake/Hiller returning rumors:Hiller did a great job during the regular season until bad decisions cost him dearly in the playoffs. It's unclear whether another coach would be an improvement. What is clear is Rob Blake's team-building philosophy doesn't work. It hasn't…

However, based on some early off-season rumblings, it doesn't appear that change is on the horizon. In fact, it sounds like management is already circling the wagons and Kings fans may be hearing soundbites of "it's hard to make the playoffs four years in a row" and "we were right there" sooner rather than later.
REPORT: Blake and Hiller Likely to Remain with Kings for 2025-26 Season#GoKingsGo https://t.co/8Z39qRBAhV pic.twitter.com/vCCLVSLBj4

Since being hired as general manager in 2017, Rob Blake has failed to deliver a playoff series win. Only the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres have longer playoff series wins droughts. Head coach Jim Hiller, who sports the franchise's highest points percentage (.638) in the regular season, has a meager .273 winning percentage in the playoffs. After replacing Todd McLellan late last season, Hiller has already lost to Edmonton twice in the playoffs, matching McLellan's two series loses from 2022 and 2023.
With a valuation of over 2 billion dollars, the Los Angeles Kings are among the top five wealthiest teams in the league. It begs the question of how much longer the fans will continue streaming into Crypto.com Arena should they decide to "run it back" without any significant roster or managerial moves. As of this year, attendance at Crypto was averaging at 17,196 or 94.9% of capacity. At first glance, those numbers appear fairly solid but it actually places the Kings in the bottom third of the league, just above Seattle and Pittsburgh. Two teams that didn't even make the playoffs.
Will there be incremental moves or a big shake up this off-season? We should be getting some answers to that question in the coming days, but if past is precedent, fans in the Kingdom shouldn't hold their breath.

Australian Alex Toohey reveals how the NBL prepared him for the 2025 NBA draft

Australian Alex Toohey reveals how the NBL prepared him for the 2025 NBA draft Alex Toohey played two years in the National Basketball League, and the Australian believes that time with the Sydney Kings helped prepare him for the 2025 NBA draft. Toohey averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists on 30.2% shooting from 3-point range in 30 appearances with the Kings. He was rewarded with the NBL Next Generation Award, given to the top player under the age of 25. The 6-foot-8 forward signed with the Kings as part of the Next Stars program, which has also helped the likes of LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey and Alexandre Sarr, among others. He is appreciative of that time, as he prepares to transition to the NBA. "I think just being a pro early, you learn those habits," Toohey said Monday after working out with the Sacramento Kings, via Sean Cunningham of KCRA-TV. "Basketball is one part of it, but everyday life is another part of it. You have a lot of time to yourself, so just making sure you're good with your time management and efficient with your body and your mind. ... I think just being able to play against grown men and be able to compete in a high-pace league." Toohey is considered a potential first-round pick because of his offensive skill set and ability to score in various ways. He also made a jump on the defensive end of the court, thanks to his instincts and 6-foot, 10 3/4-inch wingspan. The 21-year-old competed in the combine last month, averaging 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in two scrimmage games. He also recorded a 2.90-second time in the shuttle run, tied for the 16th-fastest mark among all participants this year. Toohey has also had a known workout with the Toronto Raptors this predraft cycle. He is looking to make the most of those visits and show teams he is capable of impacting games at a high level. "I think just versatility," Toohey said of what he wants to prove to teams. "Being able to play different positions, be comfortable in different situations and be a confident basketball player across the board."

Devin Williams is Matt Blake's biggest Yankees pitching puzzle to date

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free For years, the Yankees and pitching coach Matt Blake have gained a reputation for taking relievers that have been mediocre — or worse — with other organizations and turning those afterthoughts into useful — or better — bullpen pieces in The Bronx. There was Clay Holmes, who went from wallowing with Pittsburgh to Yankees closer, and other lesser-known arms like lefties Wandy Peralta and Lucas Luetge, as well as right-hander Ian Hamilton. Even Fernando Cruz, whose stuff has always been recognized, is having more success with the Yankees than he did in his years in Cincinnati following his arrival in the trade that sent Jose Trevino to the Reds this past offseason. All of them came to the Yankees with unimpressive résumés and quickly became better with the Yankees. 4 Devin Williams throws a pitch during the Yankees' win against the Red Sox on June 6. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post So why, with as good a track record as any in the majors over the past several seasons, has it gone so poorly for Devin Williams? And how have Blake and Co. gone about trying to fix it? 'It was shocking to everybody,' Blake said of Williams' early season struggles, when he was battered around for 10 earned runs, a dozen hits and seven walks in just eight innings in his first 10 appearances. 'Everybody was trying to figure out what was going on here and what are we missing?' Blake said. 'He's not getting the swing-and-miss and the strikes we were hoping for. We had all those questions and had to get it fixed on the fly.' Williams is back in the closer role — at least temporarily, with Luke Weaver on the IL with a hamstring strain — but the former Brewer is beginning to resemble the pitcher he was in Milwaukee. After putting up a whiff rate of just 26.8 percent on his changeup and 25.6 percent with his four-seamer in March and April, Williams was at 39.6 percent with his change and 47.1 percent with his four-seamer in May. Those numbers are more in line with those he had with the Brewers last season, with a 48.8 percent on the changeup and 32.7 percent with the fastball. 4 Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake is pictured during spring training. Charles Wenzelberg CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS 'I think he's gotten comfortable in the environment,'' Blake said. 'He had the challenge of not pitching well and having it magnified in New York.' On the pitching side, Blake said Williams was 'maybe a little too overreliant on the changeup early on and his fastball command wasn't great, which limited what he was doing.' 4 Aaron Boone removes Devin Williams from the Yankees' April 25 game. Jason Szenes for the NY Post Since then, Blake said Williams has been both 'more unpredictable and more aggressive in the zone to control counts better so can get that expansion and chase in counts he wants.' The results, while not vintage Williams, have improved. His strikeout rate since May 7 has jumped from 11.4 per nine innings to 12.8 and his walks have dropped from 4.5 per nine innings to 1.5. And in his past 13 appearances, he's walked two and struck out 17 and his WHIP is 0.830. 'The best thing we did was being able to pull him out of the [closer] role without sacrificing our relationship with him and say, 'We fully believe you will have success in this role, but let's take a break and find some different spots to get you in to get you rolling,' ' Blake said. 'That freed us up to get him back on track and hopefully we can build on that.' Williams still hasn't gotten all the way back, and questions about whether he will be the closer the Yankees sought when they traded Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin for him persist. 4 Austin Wells (l.) and Devin Williams (r.) embrace after the Yankees defeated the Red Sox on June 6. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post But Blake is more confident now. 'He's in a good place and the rhythm of his attack plan to batters has gotten stronger,'' Blake said. 'He feels good about his process and we feel good about putting him in those spots again. He's gonna have some hiccups along the way, but there's much more stability to get through those now.'

Fans Upset After Mariners' Cal Raleigh Announcement on Sunday

Fans Upset After Mariners' Cal Raleigh Announcement on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Angels are looking for a sweep of the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Taking the first two games of this three-game AL West matchup, Los Angeles is pursuing its second-straight series victory after taking two of three from the Boston Red Sox last week. Advertisement Both wins over Seattle this weekend have not come easy for LA. Securing a 5-4 victory on Friday, the Angels followed that with a narrow 8-6 win on Saturday. One of the biggest challenges LA has faced against Seattle has been containing switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh. The MLB's leader in home runs with 26, Raleigh left the yard twice on Saturday. The only American League hitter with definitively better numbers than Raleigh this season has been New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge. Entering Sunday, the Mariners' catcher owns a 1.035 OPS that ranks second in baseball. This production has carried Seattle's offense that ranks middle of the pack in most offensive metrics. But on Sunday, the Mariners will have to survive without Raleigh, as he is not in the lineup against LA. It is not uncommon for a starting catcher to sit the series finale, especially when the start time is earlier than normal. That said, Mariners fans were upset to see the team's best run producer on the bench. Advertisement "No Dumper? We will not be watching," said one. "Cal out lol .. only good player.. that's cool," one added. "Cal has a full day off. We probably aren't scoring," one predicted. "No Cal? No thanks," said another. "Cal not in the lineup we lose by 20," said another. "No Cal? Sweep incoming," one added. "We are the only team dumb enough to sit the league MVP," one wrote.
