DGCA orders additional maintenance checks for Air India's B787 aircraft
New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday issued a directive mandating urgent additional maintenance checks for Air India's B787-8/9 fleet equipped with Genx engines.
The directions were issued in the wake of the recent accident involving an Air India Boeing B787-800 aircraft operating flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick on June 12.
In an order issued here, the aviation regulator stated that, as a preventive measure, the DGCA has directed Air India to carry out additional maintenance actions on Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft equipped with Genx engines, in coordination with the concerned regional DGCA offices.
These measures will come into effect from June 15, the order said.
The DGCA stated that, as part of aircraft maintenance and pre-flight drills, inspections must be carried out for fuel parameter monitoring and related system checks, cabin air compressor and associated systems, electronic engine control system testing, engine fuel-driven actuator operation testing, oil system inspection, and serviceability checks of the hydraulic system.
In addition, a review of the flight readiness parameters should be conducted, and a 'flight control inspection' must be included in the transit checks until further notice.
A power assurance check should be carried out within two weeks, and maintenance actions on Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft must be ensured at the earliest based on a review of recurring faults observed over the past 15 days.
The DGCA stated that the complete report of the above-mentioned inspections must be submitted to the DGCA for review.

4-month sand mining ban in state to protect rivers
Patna: There will be no river sand mining in Bihar for four months till Oct 15. Even authorised leaseholders will not be allowed to extract sand during this period. The transport of sand outside the state is also prohibited. However, the mines and geology department has assured that there will be no shortage of sand during the monsoon ban. Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, who also oversees the mines and geology portfolio, said on Sunday, "The sand mining will resume after monsoon. However, there will be no shortage of sand. I have asked the officials to keep a track on anyone demanding more than the prescribed rate and punish them." The department has stockpiled over 30 lakh cubic feet (CFT) of sand near river ghats and several stockists have been licensed to store additional quantities. Seized sand will also be made available for sale. According to an official from the department, only mining is restricted during this period, not the transportation of already-stocked sand. Adequate reserves are available at the secondary loading points across the ghats. Of the 457 river ghats identified for yellow sand extraction in Bihar, 161 were operational prior to the ban. During the prohibition period, the department's disaster management group will oversee operations to prevent illegal mining and maintain order. This annual monsoon-season ban is implemented to safeguard the river ecosystem and curb unlawful mining. Even approved leaseholders are barred from extraction during this period. Credit over caution: Household savings in India fall to 18.1% of GDP; more Indians rely on credit to fund expenses
India's household savings have slipped to a new low for the third consecutive year, falling to 18.1% of GDP in FY24, according to a report by CareEdge Ratings. On the other hand, household debt rose to 6.2% of GDP, almost twice as much as ten years ago, showing that more Indians are borrowing to meet their everyday needs, the report said. The report also pointed to a wider dip in gross domestic savings, which dropped to 30.7% of GDP in FY24, down from 32.2% in FY15. Despite the worrying decline in savings, the report notes a more promising outlook in rural India. Wage growth for rural male workers rose 6.1% year-on-year in February, marking the fourth straight month that earnings outpaced rural inflation. Easing food inflation and healthy agricultural prospects are also helping boost rural consumption. 'Going ahead, RBI policy rate cuts, lower tax burden and continued easing of price pressures remain key tailwinds for the broad-based demand recovery,' CareEdge said in the report. Rural consumer confidence is showing cautious optimism, holding steady near the neutral 100 mark. Meanwhile, urban consumer sentiment remains subdued, although expectations for the year ahead remain hopeful across both rural and urban households. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like May 2025: Top 5 Dividend Stocks [Read Now] Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo The report also highlighted a broader trend of cost control in corporate India. Labour cost growth in major IT firms, for instance, has dropped from a high of 26% in Q3 FY23 to just 4% in Q3 FY25, pointing to continued efforts at cost rationalisation. On the inflation front, there's more good news. India's retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), fell to 3.2% in April 2025, the lowest since August 2019. However, prices of essentials such as edible oils (up 17.4%) and fruits (up 13.8%) remain stubbornly high. A strong Rabi harvest, healthy water reservoir levels, and forecasts of an above-normal monsoon are expected to help stabilise food prices further. As per government data, the Indian economy grew by 6.5% in real terms in FY25, signalling resilience despite pressures on household balance sheets.
