The Beachline: Trump Jr's friend cuts a curious path from Pakistan to Bangladesh via Turkey. Who is he?

Economic Times16-05-2025

New Delhi: Who is Gentry Thomas Beach? This question looms large over US President Donald Trump puzzlingly even-handed remarks on Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, in turn, putting the spotlight on his family's dealings with Pakistan's deep state.
Beach, a Texas-based investor and a college friend of Donald Trump Jr, it appears, was there right at the start - Pakistan, Turkey and Bangladesh.
On January 30, within 10 days of Trump's oath-taking, Beach was in Islamabad projecting himself as a 'Trump associate'. He brought with him a team of potential investors under the umbrella firm White Bridge Global. He met Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, as reported in Pakistan media, and told him: "America cares about Pakistan... You are our front face in the entire region, very important."Beach went on to pledge "billions of dollars" to recast the skyline of Karachi and Islamabad. "Through White Bridge Real Estate, we are prepared to invest in and develop landmark projects that meet global standards."
Then, he went on to sign a deal with Pakistan company Apex Energy for exploration and development of placer gold deposits estimated at $50 trillion, as per local reports. Incidentally, a couple of months ago, the National Engineering Services of Pakistan claimed that they have located a vast placer gold block, apparently worth Rs 80,000 crore, near Indus river in Attock. The scientific logic is that these are gold deposits off the Himalayas, mixed in the sediments of the Indus and now deposited in the lower reaches of the river. Placer mining is the excavation technology to separate gold from its sediments.Plus, Beach's two-day visit also saw Pakistan exploring the possibility of joint mining for critical minerals that can somehow get Islamabad into US Defence Department's Trusted Partner Programme.
This visit was organised through the Pakistan's Special Investment Facilitation Council. Formed in 2023, it's led by the Pakistan PM but has Pakistan army chief Asim Munir as member of the apex committee. The National Coordinator, a key member of both the apex and the executive committee, is also an army officer, Lt Gen Sarfaraz Ahmed, and so is the Director General, SIFC, Maj Gen Tabassum Habib. Such was Beach's confidence in his Trump credentials that he even clarified to Pakistan media on US Special Presidential Envoy Richard Grennel's support for Imran Khan. "He may have been misled on Pakistan," he reportedly said. From Islamabad, Beach went to Dhaka, where he met Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Younus and the Jamaat-e-Islami leadership along with officials of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority. As per some reports, there he fronted his other company Highground Holdings to express interest in investing in Bangladesh's minerals and energy sectors.Interestingly, White Bridge Global's other big deal was inked on Tuesday with Turkish firm Terra Holdings to set up a 50-50 joint venture in Dubai, completing a worry-for-India arch connecting Turkey, Pakistan and the new regime in Bangladesh.Beach and Trump Jr were together at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, in the 1990s. Both hit headlines recently in the course of a decades-long trial and retrial of a case between Beach and his former employee Touradji Consultants.A raft of emails surfaced in the proceedings, essentially exchanges between Beach and Trump Jr that conveyed racial slur. The former has since moved an application in the court to redact those mails on grounds that they have little relevance to the case at hand.Either way, the association runs deep and the nature of the quick South Asia trip, right after Trump became president is likely to raise questions in the light of his remarks post-Op Sindoor as well as the recent cryptocurrency deal between World Liberty Financial, which has links with Trump's family, and Pakistan's hurriedly created Crypto Council.Meanwhile, a web page has been launched called White Bridge Pakistan (whitebridgepakistan.com). It says: Launching Soon.

MCX gets SEBI nod to launch electricity derivatives

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch electricity derivatives. Backed by both SEBI and Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), this move aims to help power generators, distributors, and large consumers hedge price risks and manage volatility. It is a big push for efficiency in the power market and aligns with Indias goal of becoming a developed, energy-secure nation. Praveena Rai, MD & CEO, MCX, said: "The introduction of electricity derivatives marks a pivotal development in Indias commodities ecosystem. These contracts will offer participants a reliable, transparent, and regulated platform to manage power price risks, which are becoming more dynamic due to renewables and market-based reforms. With Indias growing focus on renewable energy and open access power markets, electricity derivatives can serve as a vital bridge between the physical and financial sectors." MCX is India's leading commodity derivatives exchange with a market share of about 98% in terms of the value of commodity futures contracts traded in financial year 2024-25. It offers trading in a diverse range of commodities, spanning multiple segments including bullion, energy, metals and agri commodities, as well as sectoral commodity indices. On a consolidated basis, MCX's net profit rose 54.16% to Rs 135.46 crore while net sales rose 60.83% to Rs 291.33 crore in Q4 March 2025 over Q4 March 2024.

HC grants relief to candidates

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Friday granted relief to CLAT-PG candidates over alleged discrepancies in the answer key and directed the consortium of NLUs to declare results soon. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela's decision came over the plea of students in relation to a couple of answers in the key. The court, however, rejected the objection with respect to the declared answer to a third question, and asked the consortium of national law universities (NLUs) to accordingly award marks to the candidates. The court passed the order while deciding three pleas seeking rectification of errors in the final answer key of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-PG 2025. The bench's verdict highlighted the issue of a high fee of Rs 1,000 charged by the consortium per question for raising the objection to the provisional answer key, observing there ought to be a 'fine balance' between the concerns of the candidates and the institutions. While comparing the fee charged for objected questions by other organisations, the fees sought by the consortium 'appeared to be excessive and disproportionate' but the consortium's concern that it was required to keep frivolous individuals and coaching institutes at bay also did not appear to be 'fanciful or imaginative', it added. The bench, however, expected the consortium to take heed of its observations and take appropriate steps to 'avoid such excessive fee in the next examinations'. 'It may be advisable for the consortium to place this issue before the committee headed by Justice G. Raghuram (retd) for his valuable opinion which may be adhered to by it,' the bench said. The court ruled on the correctness of the answers in the answer key after considering each question and the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioners and the consortium. CLAT determines admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in national law universities in the country. CLAT PG 2025 was held on December 1, 2024. Multiple pleas were filed in different high courts alleging several questions in the exam were wrong. On February 6, the Supreme Court transferred all the petitions over the issue to the Delhi High Court for a 'consistent adjudication'. The top court passed the direction on the transfer petitions of the consortium.

'I Am Not Participating...': FBI Chief Kash Patel Responds To Trump-Musk Public Feud

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel has refused to participate in the public feud between US President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, after the latter said Trump was in the Jeffrey Epstein files, which is why they have not been released so far. 'I'm not participating in any of that conversation between Elon and Trump," said Patel on the 'Joe Rogan Experience" podcast on Thursday after learning of Musk's statement regarding Trump's involvement in the Epstein files.
