Pop Star Keisha Buchanan, Member of Girl Group Sugababes, Was ‘Beaten and Controlled by Ex' for 3 Years, Court Hears
The 40-year-old singer's ex-partner Taiwo Leo Atieno appeared in court on Thursday, May 8, facing several charges of alleged abuse during their relationship
"The defendant has conducted a campaign of terror and abuse against the complainant for over ten years," Prosecutor Edward Kalber told the courtA British popstar has accused her ex-partner of spending three years harassing her while also demonstrating coercive and controlling behavior.
On Thursday, May 8, Willesden Magistrates' Court heard allegations of how Keisha Buchanan was beaten and blocked from wearing red lipstick by Taiwo Leo Atieno during their 10-year relationship. Per prosecutors, the soccer star, 39, who played for Kenya and Luton Town, also allegedly controlled Buchanan's finances, when she could shower, and eating habits, UK newspapers The Standard and Metro reported.
He is also accused of preventing the Sugababes singer, 40, from watching TV, only allowing her to go to the gym at 'certain times' and demanding $33,000 [£25,000] from her.
The pair reportedly met in 2006 and began dating in 2011, while the alleged abuse took place between 2015 and 2018, the outlets reported.
Buchanan went to the police in December last year to report the 'campaign of terror and abuse' she allegedly suffered, according to The Standard.
Atieno allegedly harassed the 'About You Now' singer after their relationship ended, while also breaching a court order banning contact.
He reportedly sent texts, emails and made social media contact for three years.
'The offending is severe in its nature and has caused […] problems for the defendant, both psychological and physical,' Prosecutor Edward Kalber said, according to Metro.
'The complainant states that while she lived with the defendant, she wasn't allowed to open her own letters or sort out her finances,' he continued. 'The complainant would have to ask for money whenever she wanted it.'
'The defendant would get annoyed if the complainant wore red lipstick. He berated her and called her trashy, and told her she looked like a prostitute whenever she wore this,' Kalber added. 'This then fed into her dietary issues, due to the defendant controlling what she was allowed to eat.'
Having been allegedly assaulted three times, Buchanan had to undergo physiotherapy due to the physical abuse, Metro reported.

Atieno is charged with controlling and coercive behaviour between December 2015 and May 2018, assault occasioning actual bodily harm between January 2012 and January 2015, harassment between January 2021 and December last year, and an alleged breach of a non-molestation order, per The Standard.
The Brixton-born forward of Kennington, southwest London, indicated not guilty pleas to all four charges against him when he appeared in the dock on Thursday, according to the outlet.
His lawyer, Eli Belegu, told the court that Atieno was Buchanan's business manager.
'This is absolutely misleading as far as he is concerned,' she said, according to MailOnline. 'He denies that she ever had to ask him for money. The defendant is not a flight risk. The defendant has no intention of leaving the country and will attend further hearings.'
'The defendant is not at risk of committing further offenses," Belegu added.
Buchanan also contests that he breached a court order.
Atieno was remanded back into custody following the court appearance. Deputy District Judge Clare Boichot has sent the case to Harrow Crown Court, with a preliminary hearing set for June 5.

Melania Trump demands Hunter Biden retract 'extremely salacious' Epstein comments
WASHINGTON -- First lady Melania Trump demanded that Hunter Biden retract comments linking her to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and threatened to sue if he does not. Trump takes issue with two comments Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, made in an interview this month with British journalist Andrew Callaghan. He alleged that Epstein introduced the first lady to now-President Donald Trump. The statements are false, defamatory and 'extremely salacious,' Melania Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, wrote in a letter to Biden. Biden's remarks were widely disseminated on social media and reported by media outlets around the world, causing the first lady 'to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm,' he wrote. Biden made the Epstein comments during a sprawling interview in which he lashed out at 'elites' and others in the Democratic Party he says undermined his father before he dropped out of last year's presidential campaign. 'Epstein introduced Melania to Trump. The connections are, like, so wide and deep,' Biden said in one of the comments Trump disputes. Biden attributed the claim to author Michael Wolff, whom Trump disparaged in June as a 'Third Rate Reporter.' He has accused Wolff of making up stories to sell books. The first lady's threats echo a favored strategy of her husband, who has aggressively used litigation to go after critics. Public figures like the Trumps face a high bar to succeed in a defamation lawsuit. The president and first lady have long said they were introduced by Paolo Zampolli, a modeling agent, at a New York Fashion Week party in 1998. The letter is dated Aug. 6 and was first reported Wednesday by Fox News Digital. Abbe Lowell, a lawyer who has represented Biden in his criminal cases and to whom Brito's letter is addressed, did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Wednesday.

Man accused of faking death and fleeing U.S. convicted of rape
A man accused of faking his own death and fleeing the United States to avoid sexual assault and fraud allegations was convicted of rape in Utah on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. A Salt Lake County jury found Nicholas Alahverdian, who has been identified and charged by authorities in Utah as Nicholas Rossi, guilty after three days of testimony. Deliberations began Wednesday. He will be sentenced in October, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Alahverdian faces a second rape trial in nearby Utah County scheduled for September. In 2022 — two years after an online obituary stated that Alahverdian died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma — Alahverdian was arrested in Scotland under the name Arthur Knight. Speaking with a British accent and appearing in a wheelchair, he denied that he was Alahverdian and claimed that he was an Irish orphan who had become a businessman. In his opening statement, the prosecutor in the Salt Lake County case said that Alahverdian admitted his true identity under oath last year. He accused Alahverdian of raping a 24-year-old woman in 2008 after a whirlwind romance and engagement. At trial, the victim testified that Alahverdian quickly became controlling and mean after she bought their rings and lent him money for rent. When she removed the ring and told him their relationship was over they fought and he eventually assaulted her, she testified. Alahverdian's defense lawyer, MacKenzie Potter, compared the allegations to an 'old puzzle from the thrift store,' saying that 'not all the pieces are there.' The victim's story had changed over time, Potter said, and it can't be verified. Alahverdian, who was raised in Rhode Island's foster youth system and later became an outspoken aide in that state's legislature, was previously accused or convicted in other assault and sex crimes cases involving women he was in relationships with. In a case in Massachusetts in 2010, a woman he was married to at the time told authorities he held her down, grabbed her neck, struck her in the face and refused to let her leave their home following an argument over a crying baby. Alahverdian pleaded no contest to misdemeanor domestic assault and was sentenced to probation. In Ohio in 2008, a woman whom Alahverdian met on MySpace accused him of sexually assaulting her while walking to class at a local community college. He denied the allegation and was charged with public indecency and sexual imposition, a misdemeanor crime indicating sexual contact against a person's will. After a trial, Alahverdian was fined and ordered to register as a sex offender. The second Utah case, also from 2008, involves a woman who said they'd started dating after they met on MySpace. An affidavit in support of an arrest warrant shows that she told authorities that she broke it off after he became increasingly aggressive and borrowed money without paying her back. On Sept. 13 of that year, she said she went to his home after he said he'd pay her back, according to the affidavit. He instead raped her, according to the document. A sexual assault kit was completed the next day, authorities have said, but a backlog in testing meant that Alahverdian was not identified as a suspect until a decade later. Alahverdian has pleaded not guilty in that case.
