Mets' Brooks Raley getting it done after return from Tommy John surgery

The MLB season is nearing the home stretch, but for Brooks Raley it has just begun.
Coming off Tommy John surgery performed at the beginning of last season, Raley's been thrown into the fire right away as one of two Mets left-handed relief pitchers.
'There would be [pressure] if I hadn't played on this team before,' Raley told The Post before pitching a scoreless eighth inning in the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Guardians.
Raley said it also helps that he's familiar with the role, considering that he was the lone lefty out of the bullpen for the majority of his first season with the Mets in 2023.
Carrying that responsibility as the go-to guy to shut down left-handed hitters, Raley thrived with a 2.80 ERA across 66 appearances.
He pitched eight scoreless outings in 2024 before his surgery and has added on seven more scoreless appearances since returning July 19 this season.
But like any player coming back from such an injury, he's faced his struggles.
'The most difficult part is jumping back right after the All-Star break,' he told The Post. 'Some guys have been up here for three months at it — I'm just trying to get back in the flow of everything.'

Though he noted some 'sporadic' changeup control since making his return, Raley said he thinks he's 'executed well' overall.
At 37 years old, the veteran is still learning some things along the way.
'You never know, before surgery, how banged up you've been,' he told The Post. 'I've always battled stuff with my elbow before and kind of just found a way to navigate that.'
No longer dealing with 'sharpness' in his elbow, pain that he 'played with for a while,' Raley has found some immediate success upon his return.
'The [velocity's] been up a little bit, the ball feels like it comes out better, the movements are a little bit better,' he told The Post.
His return was called essentially a 'trade deadline acquisition' by manager Carlos Mendoza — and perhaps he could wind up being the most valuable one in the righty-heavy bullpen.

'[I'm] just trying to find my place and [make] some good adjustments, which I think I've done a really good job of,' Raley said. 'Knowing that I don't have to carry more than I'm supposed to because of how many good players we have, it's just doing my job whenever I'm called upon.'

Orioles' Félix Bautista faces another long recovery after surgery to repair rotator cuff and labrum
BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles closer Félix Bautista has had another major operation, this time to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. The team says Bautista had surgery Tuesday with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. The development comes just over a week after interim manager Tony Mansolino announced the 6-foot-8 right-hander would miss the rest of the season because of a 'significant' shoulder injury. Bautista is likely to miss most of next season too, part of a string of health issues that have limited him since he made the All-Star team in 2023. Bautista was one of the most imposing relievers in baseball that year, posting 33 saves and a 1.48 ERA. But he missed the last month of that season, plus the playoffs, because of a right UCL injury. After Tommy John surgery, he was out for all of 2024. Bautista was able to make it back this year, going 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 19 saves, but after 34 2/3 innings, he'll miss significant time again. 49ers sign Michael Dunn, Malik Knowles and release Demone Harris, Corey Kiner
With just days until their final preseason game, the San Francisco 49ers are trying to put together the best roster that they can before they have to trim the group down from 90 players to 53. With so many injuries, San Francisco's roster has been in constant flux, and that trend continued on Wednesday when they signed offensive lineman Michael Dunn and Malik Knowles. Dunn, 30, played collegiately at Maryland from 2012-16 before signing with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Since then, he's had stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Birmingham Iron (AAF) and Seattle Dragons (XFL). Over the last five seasons with Cleveland, he's appeared in 53 games and started nine. Knowles, 25, earned All-Big 12 honors twice (2021-22) at Kansas State during his five-year collegiate career before signing with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He spent 2024 with the Green Bay Packers and had a stint with the 49ers earlier this offseason. To make room for the two additions, the 49ers release veteran defensive end Demone Harris and waived/injured rookie running back Corey Kiner. Harris, 29, joined the 49ers last week after stops with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs (where he won a Super Bowl), Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons. His depature leaves San Francisco with Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Yetur Gross-Matos, Bryce Huff, Robert Beal, Sam Okuayinonu, Jonathan Garvin, Trevis Gipson, William Bradley-King and Jaylon Allen on the edge. Kiner, 23, played collegiately at LSU in 2021 before transferring to Cincinnati for his final three seasons. Between the two schools, he rushed for 2,882 yards and 16 touchdowns on 5.2 yards per attempt and caught 32 passes for 172 yards. After signing with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent, he went down with an injury in the team's preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He's now subject to waivers, and if he clears, he'll revert to the team's injured reserve.
