India beats Bangladesh on penalties to win SAFF U-19 Championship 2025
India U19s showed nerves of steel to outlast Bangladesh 4-3 on penalties to successfully defend its SAFF U19 Championship crown at the Golden Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.
The match had ended 1-1 after regulation time, forcing a nervy penalty shootout. Buoyed by a raucous crowd, India had taken the lead in the second minute through captain Singamayum Shami before Bangladesh equalised in the 61st minute through Md Joy Ahamed.
The shootout was not for the faint-hearted. Rohen Singh's limp second penalty gave Bangladesh the upper hand as keeper Md Ismail Hossain Mahin saved the spot-kick.
But Bibiano Fernandes' boys refused to buckle. When Bangladesh skipper Nazmul Huda Faysal blazed his effort over the cross-bar, the game swung back India's way. With renewed belief, India converted its remaining kicks, and goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam delivered when it mattered the most. He dived low to his left to deny Salahuddin Sahed.
Captain Shami, who had started the evening with a stunning goal, stepped up for the final kick. Calm, composed, and full of conviction, he slotted it in to crown India champions once again. A fitting end to a tense and fiercely fought contest.

Best Goalkeeper: Suraj Singh Aheibam - India
Most Valuable Player: MD Arbash - India
Fair Play: India
India had come flying out of the blocks. Within two minutes, it was ahead. Awarded a free-kick from over 30 yards out, Shami spotted the Bangladesh keeper slightly out of position and went for goal. His curling strike was pinpoint, and even though Mahin got a hand to it, the power behind the effort carried it into the net.

India rode the momentum, dominating possession and pushing Bangladesh on the back foot. In the 16th minute, Omang Dodum sliced through the defence with a solo run and was nearly in for a second, but Mahin made a vital save to keep Bangladesh in the contest.
Those missed chances would come back to haunt India.
Bangladesh, rattled at first, grew into the game. It closed down spaces, cut off India's passing channels, and slowly turned the tide. By half-time, it had begun to threaten with set-pieces, but India's backline stood firm.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute. A chaotic corner sparked a scramble in the box, and Md Joy Ahamed pounced on the loose ball, firing it past Suraj Singh to level the match. It was the first goal India had conceded in the tournament, and it came at the worst possible moment.
From there, both teams pressed for a winner, but the game turned cagey and physical. The final third became a battlefield, and clear-cut chances were few and far between.
With the whistle blowing for full time, it all came down to the tie-breaker. And India captain Shami rose to the occasion a second time to bury the final penalty into the net and send his team and the crowd into delirium.

IPL 2025: Five questions Sunrisers Hyderabad have to answer ahead of next season
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) failed to live up to their standards in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) as they finished sixth on the points table with six wins from 14 matches, having 12 points to their name. A season which began by posting the second-highest total in the tournament's history (286/6), it seemed that SRH will once again give nightmares to all teams by flexing their batting they failed to fire consistently throughout the season, which resulted in their batting getting crumbled time and again. As a result, the last year's runner ups were knocked out before the playoffs after failing to emulate their magic from 2024. As SRH aim to make a comeback next season, they will need to find answers to several questions to find the missing puzzles in their squad:1. Is ultra-aggressive approach fruitful every time? While SRH made merry on flat batting tracks in 2024 by consistently posting totals above 240, they faced an uphill task to find their rhythm on pitches which had some bite in them. As a result, they had to settle for below par score on a particular wicket, while being desperate to breach the 200-run mark. Going ahead, SRH need to re-look at their batting approach and plan their targets accordingly, as per the nature of the pitch.2. How to get contributions from middle and lower order?advertisement For SRH, the bulk of the scoring was done by Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. While the trio played a few breathtaking innings, they failed to get the support from the middle and lower order and hence couldn't get a perfect finish to their innings. Hence, the team management need to instill confidence in their under performers to get the best out of them.3. Can Mohammed Shami return to his best? After SRH bought Shami for Rs 10 Crore at the mega auction, everyone expected t he veteran seamer to form a formidable new ball pair with Pat Cummins. However, Shami had an indifferent season with the ball as he could only scalp six wickets from nine innings. The speedster also looked out of rhythm, having recently recovered from his injuries. Heading into the next season, the SRH management will have to make a decision on Shami's retention after assessing his form and preparedness to play full season.4. Which is the ideal new ball pair?SRH didn't have a stable new-ball pair throughout the season as they were forced to make changes due to their misfiring bowling attack. By the end of the season, they found gems in the form of Jaydev Unadkat and Eshan Malinga, who consistently provided them with breakthroughs. Hence, heading into the next season, the team management need to finalise a potent new-ball, which can provide them with crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay and put the opposition on the backfoot.5. Finding a wicket-taking spinneradvertisementSRH were dealt a major blow early on in the season as Adam Zampa got ruled out due to a shoulder injury. His absence left a massive void in their team as they failed to find a wicket-taking spinner in the middle overs. Harsh Dubey came to their rescue right at the end of the tournament but their playoffs hopes were crushed by then. Hence, they need to go in with an attacking wicket-taking spinner, who can break partnerships in the middle updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! End of road for Mohammed Shami in Test cricket? 'No Longer the bowler he used to be,' says former selector
Mohammed Shami. New Delhi: India named an 18-player squad for the upcoming England Test series, starting June 20. The selection included newcomers Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, as well as the return of Shardul Thakur and Karun Nair. Notable omission from the squad is veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, a decision that may indicate future team strategies. After a lengthy injury absence, Shami returned to competitive cricket in November and gradually increased his playing time. He participated in India's white-ball matches, culminating in their Champions Trophy victory in 2025. Despite this success, selectors remain unconvinced about his physical readiness for the demands of Test cricket, resulting in his exclusion from the current squad. A former Indian selector suggests Mohammed Shami's Test career may be finished. His absence from the upcoming Australia and England tours, crucial for fast bowlers, makes his selection for later home Tests unlikely. 'If Mohammed Shami isn't available in Australia or England, why would the selectors pick him against West Indies and South Africa at home. They might as well use Akash Deep, Arshdeep, Harshit or Mukesh as Siraj or Bumrah's partner,' the ex-selector was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. 'Shami's body is ageing, and one has to accept that he is no longer the bowler he used to be,' the selector added. Shami, who debuted in Test cricket in 2013, has a career record of 229 wickets from 64 matches. A BCCI medical assessment of Mohammed Shami in Lucknow found him physically unprepared for the demands of bowling extensive overs daily. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, reported that Mohammed Shami is undergoing fitness training for the upcoming England tour, but his current workload is insufficient. 'He has been trying to get fit for the series but he has had a little bit of a setback for the last week or so and he has got some MRIs done. I'd like to mention, I don't think he was going to be available for all five Tests. I don't think his workload is where it needs to be,' Agarkar told reporters in Mumbai on Saturday. 'It's what the medical guys told us that he's been ruled out of the series,' Agarkar explained that the senior pacer's unavailability was unfortunate, but the team had to proceed with its current fit players due to the player's ongoing injury and the scheduling constraints of the series. They had hoped for at least partial participation from the injured bowler, but his fitness prevented it. 'So it's unfortunate that a bowler like him will always want to try and pick by himself. At the moment, he's not fit,'

"There's no reason why he can't bounce back": Daniel Vettori backs Mohammed Shami following poor IPL season
New Delhi [India], May 26 (ANI): Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has backed experienced right-arm seamer Mohammed Shami following his disappointing performance in the competition so far. Shami had a poor IPL 2025 season in the 18th edition of the cash-rich league, the right-arm pacer managed to grab only six wickets in nine games, where he has conceded runs at an economy of 11.23. Speaking on Mohammed Shami's poor form in IPL 2025, Daniel Vettori at the post-match press conference following win over KKR said, 'It is a long time ago that he played T20 cricket, so it always takes a little bit to acclimate back into it. The game has progressed very quickly over those 18 months since the last time he played for GT he was a Purple Cap winner. I just think the challenge is remaining consistent for him.' 'I think that's where he's at his best when he hits that length and probably just wasn't at that metronomical best that we've seen in the past. And that's partly a long layoff, that's partly the game. And I know that he worked exceptionally hard and he was desperate to do well, but it just wasn't quite his season. But there's no reason why he can't bounce back because of the quality of the bowler that he is,' he added. Meanwhile, Shami stayed away from the on-field action for over a year due to an ankle injury. Shami recovered successfully from the ankle surgery in February 2024 but started suffering pain in his right knee, for which he has been seeking treatment. Last year returned to the domestic circuit and featured in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal. With his experience, the fast bowler enjoyed a fruitful outing and returned with seven scalps against Madhya Pradesh last year. Rumour mill suggested his return during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia; however, the series went by, and there were no signs of him. The 34-year-old was assigned to bowl with the new ball for India across formats in 2025. He represented the nation in the title-winning Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year and ended the campaign as the joint second-highest wicket-taker. (ANI)
