Putin will not attend Ukraine peace talks in Turkey

BBC News14-05-2025

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not travel to Turkey for peace talks on the war in Ukraine, despite calls from Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky for him to attend.Russia's delegation at Thursday's talks in Istanbul will instead be headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinksy, according to a Kremlin statement.Zelensky had previously said he would attend the talks and meet Putin in person if the Russian president agreed, and said he would do everything he could to ensure the face-to-face meeting took place. The Ukrainian president will be in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Putin and Zelensky have not met in person since December 2019. Russia and Ukraine last held direct negotiations in March 2022 in Istanbul, shortly after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbour.Fighting has raged in Ukraine since then. Russian forces have slowly expanded the amount of territory they control over the past year, mostly in the east of Ukraine.Putin had initially called for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey's largest city "without pre-conditions", before Zelensky announced that he would go in person and expected the Russian president to travel as well.Earlier on Wednesday, Donald Trump floated the possibility of joining the meeting himself if Putin did.The US president, who is currently in Qatar, told reporters he did not know if his Russian counterpart would attend "if I'm not there"."I know he would like me to be there, and that's a possibility. If we could end the war, I'd be thinking about that," Trump said. The US is expected to send a high-level delegation to the talks, including the country's top diplomat Marco Rubio. Since returning to the White House, President Trump has sought to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

The World Tonight No sign of reconciliation between Trump and Musk

US President Donald Trump is "not particularly interested" in speaking to Elon Musk after the tech billionaire and former close political ally turned on him in a bitter and public war of words. Initial reports that the pair had scheduled a phone call came to nothing. With some among the MAGA branch of Trump's supporters rounding on Musk, we explored the factional infighting and what impact it might have on the Big Beautiful Bill which Trump wants the Senate to pass, but which Musk opposes. Also on the programme, can supporters of the European Convention on Human Rights head off criticism by adapting the treaty? That's what the Secretary General of the Council of Europe seems to suggest. We hear from former Attorney General Dominic Grieve. And we speak to the Hollywood actor turned cryptocurrency sceptic about his new documentary on the phenomenon, premiering at the SXSW festival in London.

Ukraine war briefing: We bomb their warplanes, they bomb our civilians, says foreign minister

Russia's missile and drone barrage against Kyiv on Friday killed at least six people, Ukrainian officials said. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, said three emergency workers who went to a bomb site were 'killed in a repeat Russian strike'. Two died in an attack on the northern city of Chernihiv and at least one more in the north-western city of Lutsk. Eighty people were injured in attacks across Ukraine. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said Russia had ''responded' to its destroyed aircraft … by attacking civilians in Ukraine … Multi-storey buildings hit. Energy infrastructure damaged.' Ukrainian spies last weekend destroyed Russian strategic bomber aircraft on the ground using quadcopter drones hidden on top of trucks in Operation Spiderweb. Russian aviation authorities restricted flights at Moscow regional airports on Friday night as the capital came under threat from Ukrainian drones. It was the third suspension since the night of Thursday 5 June. Russia was attacked with at least 82 Ukrainian drones in areas including the Moscow region over eight-and-a-half hours, the Russian defence ministry said early on Saturday. The Moscow mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said another six drones had been headed for the capital. The Ukrainian military said on Friday that it struck the Engels and Dyagilevo airfields in the Russian regions of Saratov and Ryazan, in addition to striking at least three fuel reservoirs. Footage online showed a large fire and smoke at a fuel facility serving a military site in Russia's Saratov region that has been frequently targeted. BBC Verify said it had confirmed videos posted online of a fuel depot on fire at Engels were genuine. Nasa satellite fire monitoring also confirmed huge fires at Engels. Zelenskyy called for concerted pressure on Russia. 'If someone is not applying pressure and is giving the war more time to take lives, that is complicity and accountability. We must act decisively.' Donald Trump said he hadn't decided whether to approve sanctions against Russia that are being considered by the US Senate. 'I haven't decided to use it,' Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. 'I'll use it if it's necessary.'

Zelensky refutes Trump and calls Putin 'murderer who came to kill the kids'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected US President Donald Trump's comparison of the war with Russia to kids fighting, but labeled Russian President Vladimir Putin a child 'murderer'. Zelensky strongly refuted Trump's analogy involving him and Putin in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. 'Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy,' Trump said during an Oval Office meeting on Thursday. 'They hate each other, and they're fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart. 'They don't want to be pulled. Sometimes you're better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart.' Zelensky was asked in an interview airing on Sunday if Trump was 'getting the message' of the suffering in Ukraine. More Trending 'We are not kids with Putin at the playground in the park,' Zelensky told ABC News' This Week with George Stephanopoulos co-host Martha Raddatz in a clip released on Friday. 'He is a murderer who came to this park to kill the kids.' Zelensky added that Trump 'could not feel fully and understand this pain'. 'And it's not about President Trump, it's about any person who is not here in the country, who is some thousands of miles away — cannot feel fully and understand this pain.'
