Pune RTO enforces mandatory uniforms for auto, taxi drivers
To bring standardisation in public transport and to help passengers identify legitimate operators, Pune's Regional Transport Office has mandated the enforcement of uniform regulations for auto rickshaw and taxi drivers within the city limits.
According to Sub-Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale, as specified in the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, all licensed auto and taxi operators must adhere to the dress code which includes a white shirt paired with khaki pants and their identification cards while on duty.
'A special inspection campaign for auto rickshaws and taxis will be implemented through the Regional Transport Office, where the drivers are expected to carry valid documents for their vehicles. It should be noted that strict action will be taken against drivers found guilty during the inspection as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Authority,' stated Bhosale in a press release.

3-year-old girl killed in hit-and-run in Vashi
Navi Mumbai: A three-and-half-year-old girl was run over by a speeding white car in Vashi's Sector-17 on Sunday morning, leading to protests among the homeless. The child, Jiesha Janesh Ghosale, was walking behind her mother and siblings when the vehicle allegedly hit her and sped away without stopping. The police said that the victim lived with her family under the bridge near Vashi Plaza. The family had gone for breakfast to a roadside stall around 10am, and while they were walking back, the car hit her. Bystanders rushed the girl to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, said the police. Following the incident, a group of the area's homeless gathered outside the Vashi Police Station, asking for immediate action against the unidentified driver. The police said that the protesters raised slogans demanding justice, and accused the authorities of failing to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially homeless children who are vulnerable to such accidents. The police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the vehicle. The unknown driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving and an FIR has been registered under sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and 281 (negligent driving) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 134 (A) and (B) (duty of driver) and 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Cops crack down on unruly motorists, seize 12 bikes
Ranchi: City police have launched an extensive crackdown on unruly motorists after a video of a youth performing dangerous stunts on his two-wheeler on the newly inaugurated Kartik Oraon (Siromtoli) flyover went viral on social media. Md Kasif, the second-year undergraduate student in a city college, who featured in the viral video, though not arrested, was paraded in public and made to appeal to the public to comply with traffic rules on Monday. The bikers, mostly belonging to the age group of 19-23 years, had made commuting a tough task for others on the roads, as they ride two-wheelers at a very high speed, leading to accidents. City police and the Ranchi district transport department have now decided to teach these violators a lesson. Ranchi sadar police, starting the drive against these motorists, seized at least 12 bikes from various locations under the police station area. "The seized bikes were found violating various norms under the Motor Vehicles Act. The riders had modified the rear areas of the bike, where number plates are installed. Removing the number plates makes it easier for them to do stunts. On top of that, most of the bikes do not have number plates on the rear sides; they exist only on the front side. They have also modified the silencers to make loud sounds. Cases have been registered under the MV Act for modifying the vehicles and will be prosecuted by the court," Kuldeep Kumar, in-charge of Sadar police station, told TOI. Ranchi DTO Akhilesh Kumar said that the district transport department has been conducting drives against the unruly motorists. "The transport department has collected information on these motorists, where they perform the stunts and will take strict action against them. As per law, the bikers are fined Rs 5,000 per alteration made on the vehicles. They will be nabbed and lessons on safe driving will be imparted to them, as done to the youth who went viral after performing a bike stunt Siromtoli flyover," Kumar added. Kumar said that Md Kasif, who was nabbed after his stunt video went viral, was fined Rs 5,000 for not having a valid licence, and his two-wheeler has also been seized. Kasif was paraded in public by the police and was made to appeal to the public to comply with the traffic rules. Ranchi DC Manjunath Bhajantri directed district officials to curb any such menace on the flyover and deploy police personnel to curb crowds of selfie-takers posing a risk of accidents with vehicles passing by.

Court says even earning childrendeserve compensation, awards Rs 8L
Bengaluru: Nearly two years after a 68-year-old stonecutter lost his life in a road accident, a Bengaluru court has awarded his family Rs 8 lakh in compensation. The order was passed by judge Shreyansh Doddamani of the 21st additional small causes court and motor accident claims tribunal on May 27. The fatal accident occurred on NH-75 near Bethamangala Cross in Kolar district on June 28, 2023. Rajappa, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was critically injured when a speeding car allegedly rammed the two-wheeler from behind. Thrown off the bike, he succumbed to his injuries at RL Jalappa Hospital later that evening. The resident of Shivaramapura in Kolar was a stonecutter and part-time farmer reportedly earning Rs 30,000 a month. His wife Narayanamma, and sons Amarnath SR and Manjunatha R filed a compensation claim of Rs 35 lakh under the Motor Vehicles Act, stating he was their primary breadwinner. While the car's owner, Arun Kumar PR, confirmed valid insurance with Tata AIG General Insurance Co Ltd, both he and the insurer denied negligence. Tata AIG also questioned the validity of the driver's licence and alleged policy violations, claims the tribunal rejected after examining the police chargesheet and supporting evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police held the car driver responsible for the incident under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt), and 304A (causing death by negligence). The tribunal noted that the respondents failed to counter these findings or provide contrary evidence. Although the family claimed a monthly income of Rs 30,000 for the deceased, the court accepted a notional income of Rs 16,000 due to a lack of documentary proof, using Karnataka Legal Services Authority guidelines. It awarded Rs 6.4 lakh for loss of dependency. Additional compensation included Rs 48,400 in spousal consortium, Rs 18,150 each for loss of estate and funeral expenses, and Rs 40,000 each to the sons in filial consortium—bringing the total to Rs 8 lakh. The court ordered Tata AIG to deposit the compensation within a month, with 70% allocated to the wife and 15% each to the sons, along with 6% annual interest from the date of filing. Citing Supreme Court and Kerala High Court rulings, the judge affirmed that even adult, earning children are legal heirs entitled to compensation, noting, "Loss of a parent cannot be measured by financial dependence alone."
