RTO cracks down on illegal self-driving rentals, detains cars
Chennai: Regional Transport Office (RTO), Meenambakkam, on Thursday initiated action against the illegal rental of private vehicles to be used as self-driving cars. This followed a protest by licensed taxi operators earlier this week that drew attention to widespread violations in the city. Acting on instructions from joint transport commissioner (south zone) Pon Senthilnathan, RTO and enforcement officials conducted an inspection at Pallavaram police station, where the cars seized during the protest were examined. Several of them were found to be operating in violation of permit norms and were formally detained for running without valid commercial permits, a contravention of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. In addition, a separate notice was served to Zone Cars, the rental agency in Pallavaram, for functioning as an unauthorised canvasser and facilitating such illegal rentals, an offence punishable under Section 193 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Zone Cars, which has expanded operations to Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy, markets itself as a platform for private car owners to earn between 15,000 and 55,000 a month by renting out their idle vehicles. The firm advertises rentals at 105/hour and long trips for 1,500/day with unlimited kilometres, allowing bookings to be extended for up to six months. "Operation of private vehicles for commercial purposes without proper permits is illegal. Strict action will be taken against violators," the RTO said on Thursday.

RTO, police collect ₹71,500 from 27 heavy vehicles
B hubaneswar: Officials of Regional Transport Office (RTO) collected Rs 71,500 from 27 heavy vehicles parked illegally on the Remed Chowk-Bareipali service road on Wednesday. The illegal parking caused traffic congestion and frequent accidents on the road. The RTO staff were accompanied by Bareipali police. On Thursday, the RTO collected an additional Rs 1,55,000 for traffic rule violations across the district, informed additional RTO Kanhucharan Banra. People said the problem worsened with the ongoing construction of the elevated corridor, as buses were diverted to the service road. Mahesh Gupta, a city resident, said, "The heavy vehicles parked on the road are not giving space to vehicles to ply on. Smaller vehicles were finding it difficult to ply on the road with buses diverted. Accidents were a daily affair." Bareipali police said the unauthorized parking caused long delays for commuters. "The heavy vehicles were parking unauthorisedly on the route which caused traffic congestion and people often complained for the long hours they were taking to pass the service road adjacent to NH," an official stated.

586 vehicles, 27 driving licences face suspension over unpaid challans
: The district traffic department has sent a list of 586 vehicles to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for suspension or cancellation of registration due to more than five unpaid traffic challans. Along with this, a list of 27 driving licence holders has also been sent for possible suspension or cancellation. Assistant regional transport officer (administration), Rajesh Chaturvedi, said the list sent by the police includes only vehicle registration numbers and not the names of owners (For representation only) The action may lead to suspension for one to six months, or full cancellation in serious cases, such as repeated offences or involvement in criminal activity. Assistant regional transport officer (administration), Rajesh Chaturvedi, said the list sent by the police includes only vehicle registration numbers and not the names of owners. These vehicles have more than five pending e-challans, which were issued through the Integrated Police Management System (IPMS) using CCTV footage. 'Many drivers do not know about these challans, as they are not always informed unless they check the e-challan mobile app or receive a notice,' he said. The transport department now plans to send notices to the vehicle owners. They will be asked to pay their pending challans at the RTO. If they do not comply, their vehicle registrations or driving licences could be suspended or cancelled. Traffic inspector Amit Kumar added that the first list has already been sent, and a second list is almost ready. According to the RTO records, Prayagraj currently has 11,84,226 driving licences on record — including 9,59,382 permanent licences and 2,24,844 endorsed and learner licences.

Villagers block highway as private buses skip stops in Dharmapuri; RTO warns of permit cancellation
DHARMAPURI: Residents of Somanahalli and Periyampatti are distressed that private buses bypass their villages by using the national highway. Late on Tuesday, residents stopped over seven buses in Periyampatti in protest, demanding an explanation. Private buses going to Krishnagiri or Hosur have two designated routes. One runs along NH 44, where buses have to pass through Periyampatti, or another route that accesses NH 844, making a detour via Pulikarai and Palacode to reach Hosur. However, over the past year, many private buses have been failing to follow the designated route, leaving commuters stranded. On Tuesday, residents of Periyampatti waylaid over seven buses, disrupted traffic for over two and a half hours, and staged a protest blocking NH 44. A few days ago, residents of Somanahalli also staged a similar protest, blocking NH 844 by seizing two buses. Meanwhile, the Regional Transport Office has issued fines of up to Rs 1 lakh each to private buses. Speaking to TNIE, P Manivannan from Mallupatti, a retired postal employee, said, "The private buses here are crucial for labourers from the surrounding 20 villages, as most people here work in Hosur or Bengaluru. We have about five private buses arriving here daily, but since the opening of NH 844, which connects Dharmapuri-Royakottai and Hosur, the buses do not stop here. This has resulted in hundreds of labourers being left stranded and a loss of livelihood. Workers are forced to spend Rs 100 to Palacode by hiring private autos to access the nearest bus stand from where they can go for their daily wage work."

(Photo by Raj K Raj/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) According to the police, the victim, Avinash Nivale, 35, his wife, their 7-year-old son and Nivale's father were heading home to Ghatkopar in their Ertiga. As per Nivale, when he reached Gandhinagar at 2:30pm, the accused were travelling in the same direction, but driving in the middle of the road. When Nivale overtook their car the accused sped up, overtook him, and blocked his way. In the FIR, Nivale claimed that they had deliberately blocked his car and stopped him from going ahead. As per the police, when both vehicles stopped at the signal in front of the R-city mall, the victim got out of his car and asked one of the accused why he was blocking his vehicle. Nivale alleged that the woman in the car began abusing him claiming that she was an Regional Transport Office (RTO) officer and threatened to suspend his license. The verbal spat escalated when the two accused got out of the car and one of them threw a heavy stone at Nivale's car, breaking the window. Nivale told the police that when he tried to stop them, they grabbed his collar and began beating him. His wife came to his rescue, but the accused allegedly beat her, and molested her too. One of the accused threw a cement block lying nearby at the couple. Senior inspector Santosh Ghatekar said that Navale then admitted his wife in a private hospital as she had suffered a severe head injury. 'We have registered a case against the accused,' said Ghatekar and added that the police were verifying whether one of the accused was indeed an RTO officer as she claimed. 'They were brought to the police station and after we recorded their statement, they were allowed to go,' the police added.
