
KHNP vows cost-effective nuclear build, eyes European markets
PRAGUE — Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's 50 years of experience and proven supply chain give it a competitive edge over rivals in securing the Czech Republic's $18 billion nuclear project, President and CEO Whang Joo-ho said Thursday.
Although the contract, originally set to be signed this week, has been temporarily delayed by a court injunction following a legal challenge from a losing bidder, Whang emphasized that KHNP is fully prepared to move forward once legal hurdles are cleared.
'While there has been a slight delay, we believe things will progress smoothly, especially since the Czech Cabinet has already approved all aspects of the contract,' Whang told Korean reporters in Prague.
CEZ, the Czech Republic's state-run utility, revealed that KHNP's proposal would enable electricity to be delivered at a cost up to 10 percent lower than that of rival bids from France's EDF and the US-based Westinghouse. Whang attributed this competitiveness to KHNP's long-standing supply networks and decades of nuclear construction expertise.
'We not only have the materials for the 1,000 megawatt reactors, but also proven supply chains developed through past projects, giving us confidence that we can deliver at the promised cost,' Whang said.
The CEO also noted that rival companies have often faced significant challenges, with project timelines extending and budgets ballooning to two or three times the original estimates. 'We've carefully analyzed these factors and believe we're offering the best possible package,' he said.
On concerns of possible cost overruns, Hwang drew a distinction between the Czech project and past challenges faced in the UAE's Barakah project, explaining that any delays there were due to client-added work, not KHNP's failures.
'In the nuclear industry, Korea is widely regarded as one of the rare players capable of consistently delivering on time and within budget,' he emphasized.
When asked whether KHNP's bid for the Czech Dukovany nuclear project offers stronger cost efficiency compared to its past work on the UAE's Barakah reactors, Whang said the Czech contract reflects tighter controls and clear risk-sharing terms.
Domestically, Korea's Shin Hanul 3 and 4 reactors cost just under 6.5 trillion won ($4.6 billion) each for 1.4 gigawatt units. The Czech project's 1.0 GW reactors, though not directly comparable, are expected to come in at a lower cost.
Whang pointed out that the Czech contract is set at a relatively higher price compared to domestic projects due to overseas risk factors, but KHNP has worked to fully hedge those risks through detailed negotiations with CEZ.
For maximum profitability, Whang emphasized leveraging Korean firms' proven supply chains. But where local Czech products or services offer better value, KHNP will work with them.
'The Czech Republic has a strong manufacturing base, and we're helping local partners quickly build the qualifications needed for nuclear work,' Whang said.
CEZ has warned that a delay of several months could result in losses of hundreds of billions of dollars. When asked if KHNP would face similar losses, Whang explained, 'If we had signed yesterday, we could have fully mobilized and accounted for our workforce. Now, with the delay, we still need to retain certain staff, which leads to some losses — but relative to the overall scale of the project, it's not significant.'
Looking beyond the Czech Republic, Hwang described Europe's nuclear contract landscape as a 'battlefield,' emphasizing that trying to break into highly complex legal environments through competitive bidding can drain KHNP's resources.
Instead, he said the company is focusing on less legally burdensome markets like Norway and Sweden, where strong local developers work closely with governments to preselect nuclear sites and actively invite SMR suppliers, making them promising destinations for KHNP's small modular reactors.

During their 20-minute phone call, both leaders also called for a more active people-to-people cultural exchange and cooperation, as this year marks the 35th anniversary of forging diplomatic ties and the 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the two nations. Lee also expressed his anticipation for Fiala's visit to South Korea at his convenience during their call, Kang added. Lee's phone call with Fiala followed those of US President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Kospi soars to over 3-yr high on foreign buying spree, eased tariff uncertainties
South Korea's stock market surpassed the 2,900-point mark for the first time in over three years Wednesday, extending its winning streak to a sixth day, thanks to continued foreign inflow and progress in trade talks between the world's two biggest economies. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index added 35.19 points, or 1.23 percent, to close at 2,907.04, marking the highest level since January 14, 2022, when the index closed at 2,921.92. Trade volume was heavy at 383.5 million shares worth 12.3 trillion won ($9 billion), with winners outnumbering losers 600 to 281. Foreign investors continued their purchases of local shares for a sixth consecutive session. "The Kospi breached the 2,900-point mark on upbeat momentum created by favorable US-China trade negotiations and foreign investors' continued purchase of big-cap shares," Lee Jae-won, an analyst at Shinhan Securities, said. High-level officials from Washington and Beijing held trade talks in London for two days through Tuesday, where they agreed on a framework to carry out measures to resolve their trade disputes on rare earths and technology. Kim Jae-seung, an analyst at Hyundai Motor Securities, said expectations on the Lee Jae-myung government's policy to boost the local stock market also improved market sentiment. Lee, who took office last week, has pledged to usher in the 5,000-point era and get rid of the so-called Korea discount, which refers to investors' tendency undervalue South Korean assets due to geopolitical risks or other issues. Kospi soars to 3-year high on foreign buying, tech rally
Optimism builds as analysts forecast continued gains on policy, global tailwinds The South Korean benchmark Kospi broke through the 2,900-point threshold for the first time in over three years on Wednesday, marking a notable milestone as it extends its bullish rally. The Kospi reached as high as 2,904.21 during intraday trading, surpassing the 2,900 mark for the first time since it peaked at 2,902.79 on Jan. 18, 2022. The index opened at 2,887.32 and quickly gained in early trading, exceeding the 52-week high of 2,896.43 recorded on July 11 last year. The rally followed overnight gains on Wall Street, driven by growing expectations of improved trade conditions between the US and China. Hopes are rising that restrictions on semiconductor sales to China may be eased. After hitting its peak, the Kospi pared some gains, retreating to the 2,890-point range as of press time. At 2 p.m., it stood at 2,897.23, up 25.38 points or 0.88 percent from the previous session. The index has been on a six-day winning streak, which began a day before the country's presidential election on June 3. A massive influx of foreign capital has fueled the rally. Offshore investors purchased nearly 4 trillion won ($3 billion) worth of shares on the Kospi in June, extending the 1.16 trillion won net buying spree seen in May, according to Korea Exchange data. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, foreigners had net bought 72 billion won worth of shares, while institutional investors purchased 146 billion won. In an attempt to support the rally, President Lee Jae-myung visited the headquarters of the Korea Exchange in Yeouido, western Seoul, on Wednesday, where he held a meeting to discuss measures to prevent unfair trading. During the election campaign, Lee pledged to usher in a 'Kospi 5,000 era' by strengthening minority shareholder protections. Amid the continuing upward momentum of the Kospi, local brokerage firms are upping their outlooks. KB Securities, for instance, raised its 12-month target for the Kospi to 3,240 points by the first half of 2026. 'Although tariff risks are expected to continue through the third quarter, along with an increased possibility of a recession if the threats materialize into actual impositions, the Korean stock market is likely to demonstrate relatively strong resilience, supported by a weakening dollar, domestic stimulus measures and ongoing capital market reforms,' analyst Lee Eun-taek said. 'By the fourth quarter, trade tensions could enter a phase of resolution, leading to a rise in risk appetite and revitalized investment activity,' Lee added. With the rally of the stock market, the secondary bourse Kosdaq stood at 786.09 as of 2 p.m., up 14.89 points or 1.93 percent. The Korean won was quoted at 1,369.57 per dollar as of 2 p.m., losing value by roughly 5 won from the previous daytime trading.
