Golf in a hangar? DeChambeau's woes at the British Open get ‘The Scientist' thinking
'The Scientist' might have another one in the pipeline.
'This is going to be wild,' DeChambeau proffered at the British Open on Tuesday, 'but imagine a scenario where you've got a 400-yard tent, and you can just hit any type of shot with any wind with all the fans.
'That's what I imagine, like in a hangar or something like that. A big stadium. That would be cool to test.'
Don't put it past DeChambeau to go through with it.
After all, he's open to anything if it means improving his patchy record at golf's oldest major championship.
The 31-year-old American has played seven times at the Open Championship, where handling the fickle weather can be the key to success. He missed the cut on three occasions and only finished inside the top 30 once.
It's a record that frustrates one of the sport's deeper thinkers. He remembers playing well at the Walker Cup at Royal Lytham St. Anne's — one of the courses on the British Open rotation — back in 2015, and was quick to point out he coped fine in windy conditions in LIV Golf events in Miami and Valderrama this year.
Place him in the British Open, though, and he can get blown away — like last year at Royal Troon, when he shot 76-75 to miss the cut and said afterward: 'I can do it when it's warm and not windy.'
'The times I've been over here, for some reason, my golf swing hasn't been where it needs to be,' DeChambeau said Tuesday. 'Right now it feels as good as it's ever been. Hitting it far, hitting it straight as I can, and learning how to putt better on these greens in windy conditions and rain and all that.
'It's just figuring it out. It's just going to take time and something that I never really experienced growing up in California.'
Lifting the claret jug — as unlikely as it would be, given his Open woes — would deliver the two-time U.S. Open champion a third major title and no doubt boost the already-swelling audience on his YouTube channel that has risen to more than 2 million subscribers.
His popularity is clear over in Northern Ireland, too. Late Monday, dozens of people — mostly kids — were seen waiting outside Portrush to get a photo with, or the autograph of, DeChambeau.
He obliged, happily.
DeChambeau is using YouTube to have some fun and to show the world a different side to him. He even suggested it's just as important as the results he gets.
'I'm not going to be here forever,' he said. 'What footprint do I want to leave? I think it humbles me and almost makes me more passionate about what I'm doing off the professional golf course.
'Am I going to get frustrated playing bad golf?' he posed. 'Yeah. Am I going to want to still sign autographs? Yeah, because I care about the game.'

That's not to say he doesn't still have a burning desire to win at Portrush this week — and secure a result that will impress Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley in the process, ahead of the match against Europe in September.
'I feel pressure every week to play good for not only Keegan, but myself, and the people that I love online and everybody that's watching me,' DeChambeau said.
'I'll walk through the fire,' he added, 'rather than run away from it.'

Oakmont bans former US Open champion Wyndham Clark for damaging locker
OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark won't be allowed back at Oakmont Country Club until he pays to fix the locker he damaged and gets counseling for his anger. Golf Digest obtained a letter that club president John Lynch sent to Oakmont members this week about the incident during last month's U.S. Open, when Clark smashed up his locker out of frustration. Media were not allowed in the locker room, but a photo was leaked and went viral. 'Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property,' Lynch said in the letter. 'Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board's choosing, and the successful completion of counseling and/or anger management sessions.' Clark received a 10-year exemption for winning the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023. The exemption ends in 2033, the next time Oakmont is to host the U.S. Open. The storied club has held the U.S. Open nine times, the most of any U.S. Open site. Clark said a week later at the Travelers Championship that 'I made a mistake that I deeply regret' and he was sorry. 'But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up,' he said. According to Oakmont, he has offered to pay for repairs. Clark, who reached as high as No. 3 in the world last year, has only one top 10 on the PGA Tour in the 2025 season. Leipzig signs Ivory Coast youth international Yan Diomande with more arrivals expected
LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — Leipzig has signed Ivory Coast youth international Yan Diomande from Spanish second-division team Leganés. The club is also reportedly close to finalizing deals for Serbia midfielder Andrija Maksimović and Belgium winger Johan Bakayoko. The 18-year-old Diomande signed a contract through June 2030, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday. Diomande spent just one season at Leganés after moving from Florida-based club AS Frenzi. He made his league debut against Real Madrid and scored two goals in 10 La Liga appearances for Leganés but couldn't prevent its relegation at the end of the season. 'He's a left winger with outstanding pace, strong dribbling, athleticism and a real eye for goal. On top of that, he never gives up on a ball and plays with great team spirit. With these qualities, he fits perfectly into the type of football we want to play this season,' Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer said. Leipzig, which missed out on European qualification last season, was also expected to complete the signings of Maksimović and Bakayoko from Red Star Belgrade and PSV Eindhoven, respectively. Yussuf Poulsen, who joined Leipzig when it was still in Germany's third division in 2013, has left for promoted Hamburger SV. Usyk-Dubois 2: How to watch, what's at stake, betting odds
LONDON (AP) — Daniel Dubois gets a second shot at Oleksandr Usyk and this time the stakes are higher as the winner will become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. The pair will square off at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night almost two years after their first bout, which is best remembered for a controversial low blow by Dubois. Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth round to retain his WBA, IBF and WBO belts. Victory for Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) would see the Ukrainian become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. It's a feat he first accomplished in May 2024 by beating Tyson Fury on a split decision and taking Fury's WBC belt. Usyk then relinquished his IBF belt — with Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) the recipient — just over a year ago to focus on a rematch with Fury. The last British heavyweight to hold every major belt was Lennox Lewis 25 years ago. When is the fight? The ringwalks are expected to be at around 9:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. ET). The first fight on the undercard will begin around 5:40 p.m. What happened the first time Usyk and Dubois fought? It was held in Wroclaw, Poland, which practically speaking was home territory for Usyk, whose country is still defending itself from a Russian military invasion. The southpaw Usyk controlled the fight by using his right jab effectively, finding holes in Dubois' defense and causing the Briton's left eye to swell by the fourth round. The low blow in the fifth round remains the talking point — even this week. Dubois' punch sent Usyk to the canvas. Referee Luis Pabon had a clear view and ruled it an illegal low blow, though Dubois' camp accused Usyk of pretending to be hurt. Usyk was given nearly four minutes to recover. Usyk scored a knockdown late in the eighth round and ended it a round later with a straight right that dropped Dubois. Who have Usyk and Dubois fought recently? Since beating Dubois, Usyk secured back-to-back victories over Tyson Fury. Both fights took place in Riyadh and both went the full 12 rounds. The first was a split decision. The rematch last December was a unanimous decision. Dubois rebounded from his loss to Usyk with three wins, all by stoppages: Jarrell Miller in the 10th round; Filip Hrgovic in the eighth round; and Anthony Joshua in the fifth at Wembley. Dubois was scheduled to make a title defense against Joseph Parker in February but he backed out at the last minute citing an illness. What's at stake? So much. There is Usyk's undefeated record. The Ukrainian turns 39 in January so he's at the point of his career where every fight could be his last. Going out on top must be at least a little appealing. Plus, even though he clearly feasts on British opponents, he might not be as enthusiastic to face the likes of rising star Moses Itauma, a 20-year-old Slovakia-born British southpaw who has drawn comparisons to a young Mike Tyson. None of Itauma's past six opponents have lasted two rounds. For the 27-year-old Dubois, history awaits. He'd be the first British fighter since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Fury and Joshua have been much more heralded in their careers, but neither has been able to beat Usyk. They both fought him twice and lost. Dubois also wants to prove that his stunning knockout of Joshua last September in an IBF title defense was no fluke. BetMGM Sportsbook lists Usyk at 8/25, equivalent of a moneyline favorite of +312; and Dubois at 27/10 or +270. The odds on a draw are 17/1. Who is on the undercard?
