Half of Brits revealing they'd end a relationship if a partner's home smelt bad - a scent expert has now revealed a good aroma has the power to give us a mood and energy boost
Brits splash out at eye-watering £9billion each year keeping their homes smelling nice - with more than half saying they'd dump their partner if their home stunk. Each British household splashes out an average of £25 a month on home fragrances, including hand wash, which equates to a whopping £8.8 billion a year.
Citrus proved a hit, with a third (32%) leaning toward zesty scents, while other top household aromas include fresh laundry (35%), lavender (30%) and coffee (23%). At the other end of the scale, pongs topping the least-liked fragrance list include cigarette smoke (48%), body odour (46%) and rotten food (43%).

Our hooters plays a part in our romantic lives too, with more than half (52%) of Brits revealing they'd end a relationship if a partner's home stunk.

A third (31%) also revealed they would avoid going to someone else's home if it smelt bad, according to the study by luxury brand Baylis & Harding. Cleanliness (56%) is the number one feeling most associated with home scents, followed by comfort (51%) and calmness (49%).
Baylis & Harding quizzed the nation on their favourite smells to mark Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit, a favourite of brand ambassador Amanda Holden, being crowned its inaugural home scent of the year.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, in celebration of the Discover Your Signature Fragrance campaign launch, 79% say they are inspired by other people's nice smelling homes, while 89% feel more confident having guests over when their home smells nice.
Three-quarters of people take note of the smell of hand wash they use, with baked bread (19%), freshly cut grass (15%) and fresh coffee (14%) topping the list of quirky aromas Brits would try.
Scent expert Suzy Nightingale revealed a good aroma has the power to give us a mood and energy boost. Suzy said: "Our smell is a hidden superpower that we can tap into whenever we need, selecting hand wash aromas to enhance our mood and help us feel better every single day.

"Our choice of scent, whether that's as a hand wash or perfume, also indicates something about who we are. Those who choose Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit as their favourite fragrance are confident people who welcome a lively home - perhaps enjoying entertaining guests regularly."
Tania Slater, co-founder of Baylis & Harding, said: "We've always known the power of scent, whether its bursts of citrus or floral fragrances.
"We're thrilled to spotlight Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit as our first ever Home Scent of the Year. It's a smell that perfectly captures the refreshing and uplifting experience people want in their homes.
"Part of our Signature collection, Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit has been a customer favourite since launch, so we're under no illusion how important nice scents are to people."

The ‘underwater' trick that will keep your sunflowers blooming for longer & why vase beside the fruit bowl is a big no

THE warmer weather this year means that British sunflowers are bigger than ever. To help people who love the bright yellow blooms, a floral expert has shared her advice for keeping cut sunflowers fresh for longer. 1 With the right care you can enjoy your sunflowers at home for over a week, as these fresh-cut blooms typically last between five to twelve days in a vase. But it all depends on how recently they were cut and the way they're maintained once indoors. Shelley Davis, flower expert at Flying Flowers, has provided her expert tips for keeping your sunflower bouquets looking their best, whether you're cutting them from your garden, picking them up in-store, or receiving flowers by post. Preparation is key Before transferring your sunflowers into a vase, Shelley suggests: 'Sunflowers typically need more water than any other flowering plant, so keeping them hydrated is essential. "Make sure to trim stems at an angle to increase the surface area for water to absorb, and if possible, always cut stems under water to prevent air bubbles from entering the plant, which can lead to early wilting and reduced vase life. "This underwater trick is easier with sunflower bouquets than others, as they're usually displayed in smaller bunches making the process more manageable. 'Removing leaves from your sunflowers will further extend vase life, as leaves take energy away from the flower. By removing leaves, your sunflowers put all their energy into their blossoming heads.' 'Never forget to add flower food to your vase water", Shelley continues. "It provides essential nutrients to encourage the petals to open fully and prevents any nasty bacteria forming. 'If you don't have flower food to hand, you can make some at home. Just add one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of bleach and two teaspoons of lemon juice to a quarter cup of warm water. Alan Titchmarsh's top 7 plants that 'transform ugly fences with gorgeous flowers & fragrance' & they grow for years "Adding this is to your vase will have a similar effect, as the citric acid helps the flowers absorb water, the bleach prevents bacteria growth, and the sugar provides nourishment' Keep them away from fruit Next up, the flower expert revealed that placement is key when it comes to keeping sunflowers fresh for longer. She says: 'Keep your sunflowers away from ripening fruit, as it gives off ethylene gas that speeds up the aging process, causing sunflowers to wilt and decay faster. "Apples, bananas, pears and tomatoes emit high levels of this gas, so it's best to store them far apart." Avoid direct light and heat 'You should also keep sunflowers out of direct light and heat", Shelley suggests. "Without roots, cut sunflowers can't photosynthesise properly, so they burn energy quicker. Heat also speeds up water loss, causing them to droop and wilt further. 'Find somewhere cool and well ventilated with diffused light for your sunflowers to thrive, but also somewhere where you will still be able to see and enjoy them!' Vase size matters When choosing a vase for your sunflowers, Shelley insists that "size matters". She says: "Sunflowers have big beaming heads and the thickest stems of any cut flowers, which will benefit from a taller vase with a wide mouth to keep their height supported. 'If your vase doesn't provide enough support for heavy sunflower heads, consider using floral wire for extra stability.'

Topshop confirms location of first UK store in major return to high street after relaunching website

TOPSHOP is officially back, and it has chosen one of the UK's most iconic fashion destinations for its big return to the high street. The British brand, once a staple for teens and twenty-somethings, has confirmed Liberty will be its first UK stockist. 4 4 The news was teased on social media with a short video showing the famous Liberty façade and W1 postcode, sparking frenzied speculation among fans. Liberty later confirmed the collaboration, with its group buying and merchandising director Lydia King describing the partnership as 'really exciting,' referencing the nostalgia surrounding Topshop's cultural heyday in London. It marks the first time in four years that shoppers will be able to buy Topshop clothing in a UK store, after the collapse of Arcadia and its 2021 takeover by Asos forced the chain entirely online. The comeback follows last week's relaunch of Topshop's standalone website, separate from Asos, with a 40-piece collection fronted by model Cara Delevingne. The line, featuring fresh staples, was showcased in a fashion show at London's Trafalgar Square and was Topshop's first runway outing since 2018. Fans can also shop old favourites like its much-loved skinny jeans. Internationally, Topshop is re-establishing itself through partnerships with Irish department stores McElhinneys and Shaws, France's Printemps and Denmark's Magasin du Nord. But the Liberty tie-up is the brand's most significant move yet, signalling its official return to the British high street. Michelle Wilson, managing director of Topshop and Topman, had hinted earlier this year that the brand was planning a 'semi-permanent presence' in the UK. She also stressed the new era of Topshop won't be a copy of the old model, but a reimagined brand fit for 2025, aiming to compete in today's fast-changing fashion landscape. Topshop teases high street return WHAT HAPPENED TO TOPSHOP? The rise of e-commerce and the shift in consumer behavior towards online shopping caught the brand off guard. While competitors like Zara and H&M quickly adapted to the digital landscape, Topshop struggled to keep pace. Additionally, the brand faced criticism for its fast fashion model, which became increasingly scrutinised for its environmental impact and labour practices. The rise of more ethical and sustainable fashion brands further eroded Topshop's market share. Financial troubles began to surface within the Arcadia Group, exacerbated by Sir Philip Green's controversial business practices and personal scandals. In 2019, Arcadia Group entered a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to restructure its debts, leading to the closure of several Topshop stores. Now, with Liberty on board and a brand-new website up and running, the label that once defined a generation is banking on nostalgia and reinvention to win back shoppers. 4

Make Jamie Oliver's fluffy flourless pancakes for the Bank Holiday in just 10 minutes

If you're looking for a delicious breakfast recipe to whip up over the August Bank Holiday Weekend then look no further - and this pancake recipe is 'not too tricky' to make With the August Bank Holiday fast approaching, it's safe to say brunch is on the cards for many Brits eager to make the absolute most of their extended weekend. If you're entertaining at home rather than venturing out, then here's a scrumptious and speedy breakfast recipe that any visitor would adore. ‌ Jamie Oliver's fluffy flourless pancakes require just 10 minutes to prepare and are classified as "not too tricky" by the celebrity chef. According to instructions given by TV chef Jamie, this recipe produces two portions, but you can adjust it as needed, should you end up with any additional guests. ‌ It comes after a writer claimed 'I tried butter from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and big brands - and the winner is not Lurpak'. ‌ Publishing the recipe on his official website, Jamie explained: "These simple breakfast pancakes can be made without flour - throw the ingredients in a blender, whiz it up and fry in a pan for breakfast in no time. Easy!" Ingredients 100g porridge oats 100g cottage cheese Two large free-range eggs One tsp baking powder Olive oil or unsalted butter, for frying Topping options One avocado Two free-range eggs Chilli sauce Method Mix the oats, cottage cheese, two eggs, and baking powder in a blender. Whizz until smooth, incorporating a tiny pinch of sea salt and a splash of water if the mixture appears too thick. Warm a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat with a small quantity of oil or a small knob of butter, reports the Express. ‌ Spoon dollops of the batter into the pan, preparing in batches if required. Cook each side for approximately two minutes, or until golden brown. If preferred, serve the pancakes garnished with sliced avocado, a fried egg, and chilli sauce, or personalise with your favourite toppings. Finally, sit down, enjoy, and relax—preferably outside in the garden if the sun comes out. Looking ahead to the weekend forecast, the Met Office predicts both misery and sunshine, depending on where you live. Some parts of the country will be basking in glorious weather, while others may face the knock-on effects of a hurricane currently blowing across the US. The national forecaster said: "High pressure is likely to be the dominant feature at first bringing widely fine and dry weather whilst a generally northerly flow leads to rather cool conditions. ‌ "This will be increasingly eroded from the west as frontal systems start to move in from the Atlantic through the weekend, leading to more changeable conditions. "Whilst this is happening, a deep area of low pressure is likely to develop in the North Atlantic, linked to Hurricane Erin. This likely progresses towards the UK through the early part of the week. The changeable period will likely continue through the last week of August, especially in the north and west, with a small chance of widely wetter and windier weather developing. The evolution of this is highly uncertain, though."
