Western Michigan wins 1st Frozen Four hockey title, beating Boston University 6-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Owen Michaels scored two third-period goals to seal Western Michigan's first Frozen Four championship in a 6-2 victory over Boston University on Saturday night.
Iiro Hakkarainen and Wyatt Schingoethe had a goal and assist each, with Ty Henricks and Cole Crusberg-Roseen also scoring to cap the Broncos' first Frozen Four appearance in the program's 52-year history. Hampton Slukynsky stopped 24 shots and top-seeded Western Michigan (34-7-1) closed its winningest season with 10 straight victories.
The Broncos reached the final with Michaels scoring his second goal 26 seconds into double-overtime in 3-2 victory over defending champion Denver in the semifinals Thursday night.
In defeating the five-time champion Terriers, the Broncos become the fourth program to win the title in its championship game debut, joining Denver in 1958, Cornell (1967) and Lake Superior State (1988). Western Michigan also made it three-for-three for Michigan-based teams winning the tournament when played in St. Louis, after Michigan State won in 2007 and Michigan Tech in 1975.
The win didn't come easily. The Terriers appeared to cut the lead to 4-3 with 8:04 remaining when Matt Copponi jammed in a rebound through Slukynsky's legs. Though replays clearly showed the puck going over the line, the goal was disallowed because the whistle had blown.
Cole Eiserman and Shane Lachance scored for Boston University (24-14-2). Mikhail Yegorov stopped 22 shots in a matchup up freshman goalies.

Xabi Alonso arrival having major impact on Rodrygo Goes amid Arsenal interest

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes seemed destined to be the odd one out at the club this summer, with Los Blancos prioritising the form of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. Their activity in the transfer market would also suggest that Rodrygo is not a central part of their thinking, but Xabi Alonso's arrival could alter the situation. Rodrygo was one of just five senior players that began with Alonso on his first day of training, and on the second day, there appeared to be a clear change in his mood. The Brazilian posted in capitals 'HAPPY' on his social media pages, with pictures of him training. As per Marca, Alonso has been paying special attention to Rodrygo early on, and one of his tasks is to get the 24-year-old back to his best form. He did not play the final month of the season due to a much questioned fever, and was left out of the Brazil squad earlier this month. Alonso convincing Rodrygo to stay The Madrid-based daily say that unless there is a surprise shift, Rodrygo will continue at the club. Meanwhile Sport had that the initial conversations with Alonso and early training sessions have convinced Rodrygo to stay at the club, after doubts about his role in the team. Image via EFE Arsenal interest in Rodrygo Arsenal hold an interest in Rodrygo, and Mikel Arteta is keen on a move for him. However they have not yet made a move for the Real Madrid forward, and the suggestion is that they will not break the bank for him. Price tags between €70m and €100m for Rodrygo have been discussed as acceptable for Los Blancos. Rodrygo's role at Real Madrid While relations with Alonso may have improved matters, ultimately it remains to be seen what kind of role he has on the pitch. Most of the projections for Alonso's preferred team do not have space for Rodrygo, and he is planning for a starting XI with Franco Mastantuono on the right. If Rodrygo is not a key part of the side, it would be a surprise if he were willing to accept a reduced role.

US Open tee time awaits Docherty less than a month after horrific car accident

Associated Press OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — What Alistair Docherty thought was smoke was really the powder bursting out of the freshly deployed airbag. There was no mistaking the blood and glass covering everything in the wrecked white minivan. Docherty was driving May 20 when he got T-boned in an intersection, two days before the Korn Ferry's Visit Knoxville Open. On June 2, the 31-year-old, who missed his PGA Tour card by two spots at the end of last season, qualified for the U.S. Open. At 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Docherty will tee off at Oakmont. It's no stretch to say he's happy to be here, but Docherty wants more than just a good memory to close out this wild three weeks. 'It's not a miracle,' Docherty said after wrapping up a practice round that hardly looked possible less than a month ago, as he was tangled in the blood and glass. 'I'm very thankful. But it's definitely where I believe I'm supposed to be. Everything works out for a reason. I'm just trying to take advantage.' The pictures tell the story best. One is of the passenger's side of the minivan, sitting in the grass near the intersection, crumpled almost beyond recognition after getting slammed by an SUV that ran a red light. Another is Docherty lying in a hospital bed, lips pierced, eyes barely open, wearing a hospital gown draped over part of his neck collar. 'My car spun around a few times. I felt glass and everything come at me,' Docherty said. 'I opened my eyes and thought I saw smoke. I jumped out of the car as quickly as possible. It ended up being the stuff coming out of the airbag. I walked around a little dazed, and I was covered in blood and glass.' At the hospital, doctors and nurses were able to clean the glass off his body — no major damage there. The scans came back clean — nothing broken, either. Docherty said his shoulder and legs took the brunt of the crash. Constant work with the physical therapist allowed him to set his sites on June 2 at Duke University Golf Club. He shot 72-64 in the 36-hole qualifier to earn one of seven spots available there. The third part of that photo essay is him holding his invitation to play in the U.S. Open this week. Docherty knows he's lucky to be here but he's aiming for more — knowing a strong performance in this, his first major, could result in his second life-changing moment in a month. 'This is a great test to see where my game is at right now,' he said. 'If you show up thinking 'I don't have a chance here,' then you're done. so, I believe I have a chance to play my best here and see where it puts me.' ___ AP golf: in this topic
