
How AI Can Improve Storm Forecasting as Hurricane Season Arrives

Weather models based on artificial intelligence (AI) are better than traditional forecasts at tracking tropical storms, new research has found, part of a wave of AI breakthroughs that could improve warnings for extreme weather such as hurricanes.
"To our surprise, we saw that for the first time an AI system could outperform all existing operational forecasts for all those hurricane events," Paris Perdikaris, an associate professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania, told Newsweek.
Perdikaris spent a year with Microsoft Research working on a large-scale AI model called Aurora that was trained on more than one million hours of data from various Earth systems. On May 21, Perdikaris and collaborators at Microsoft Research published results in the journal Nature. Aurora did better than traditional forecasts in a range of predictions, including a 20 to 25 percent improvement in tracking tropical storms over two to five days.
"We see a uniform improvement across the board in terms of the accuracy," Perdikaris said.

It's the latest in a string of promising reports on AI forecasting for extreme weather.
In December, researchers at the AI lab Google DeepMind also published in Nature results from its machine learning forecast system, called GenCast. The researchers wrote that GenCast "better predicts extreme weather, tropical cyclone tracks and wind power production."
In February, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) put its AI Forecasting System (AIFS) into operation and reported that it outperforms state-of-the-art physics-based models for many measures, including tropical cyclone tracks.
"The AIFS typically does a more accurate job of moving large-scale weather systems around the globe," Matthew Chantry, strategic lead for machine learning at ECMWF, told Newsweek via email. "Storms, are typically more accurately positioned."
AI is not a panacea for tropical storm forecasting, scientists said, and recent research has exposed some weaknesses in AI forecasting. One study found that while AI systems do well at tracking a hurricane's path, they tend to underestimate wind speed and storm strength.
But with climate change supercharging storms, AI promises to be a valuable addition to our warning system, potentially helping to save lives and prevent property damage.
Cheaper, Faster Weather Modeling
The Weather Company, producers of The Weather Channel, Weather Underground and Storm Radar, have been developing AI and machine learning for forecasting tools for years, according to Peter Neilley, senior vice president of weather forecasting services and operations.
"It's just gotten more sophisticated and that enabled us to create these data-driven models," Neilley told Newsweek. "So that's all culminated in this sort of revolution for weather."
Neilley explained that, unlike traditional weather models in which supercomputers work through complicated physics formulas, AI systems operate by learning from patterns from historical weather data.
Building the AI model takes a lot of work and computing power, he said, but "they're very cheap to run once you've built the model."
That, Neilley said, is AI's main benefit. Where traditional physics-based models can take hours, an AI model could take less than a minute.
"What that enables you to do is actually run them many, many times and each time, you're running a slightly different model," he said. "With that much better prediction of how it may play out, I can use that to help people and businesses make better decisions."

In the past year, The Weather Company has partnered with NVIDIA to produce more granular forecasts using AI and to improve weather simulations. Another collaboration with government scientists aims for better integration of vast weather data to get a clear snapshot of the state of the atmosphere, the critical starting point for forecasting.
AI Cannot Replace Need for Basic Data
Neilley said the AI approach can also yield a different type of forecast, one with a probabilistic range of outcomes to consider. While that rich outlook offers many benefits in some extreme weather conditions, such as an approaching hurricane, it could lead to information overload.
"Just giving decision makers more complicated information is probably making their job harder," he said. "What is needed is an AI-based decision modeling system on top of the weather model."
The AI company Urbint aims to provide that sort of informed weather preparation for electric utility companies. In April, Urbint acquired StormImpact, an AI company that predicts the risk of storms, wildfires and floods for utility infrastructure.
"They don't just need to know that a storm is coming—they need to know which circuits will go down, how many customers will be impacted, and what resources they'll need on the ground to restore power quickly and safely," Urbint CEO Corey Capasso told Newsweek via email. The system predicts what transformers, substations and overhead lines are most vulnerable.
"That means utilities can anticipate not just if, but where and how the grid will be impacted, and start planning for the exact number and type of crews needed," he said.
StormImpact's technology is already being used by major utility companies, including Southern Company, American Electric Power and FirstEnergy.
Weather-related disruptions cost utility companies an average of $70 billion annually, Urbint said. A report released earlier this month by the Electric Power Research Institute shows extreme weather events causing at least $1 billion in damage are becoming more frequent. From 2019 to 2023, billion-dollar disasters happened about 20 times a year.
Climate scientists warn that our warmer atmosphere is contributing to many extreme weather events. Warmer air holds more moisture leading to more intense rainfall and flooding, and higher sea surface temperatures fuel tropical storms.
As we head into this Atlantic hurricane season on the heels of the two hottest years on record, several forecasts predict a busier than average season. Several veteran storm forecasters have voiced concerns about the Trump administration's deep cuts to the National Weather Service and its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), warning that some key weather bureaus are understaffed and basic data gathering has been compromised.
It may be tempting to look to the advances in AI to fill gaps left by those cutbacks. But for all the potential benefits AI holds for weather forecasting, researchers caution that it is not a replacement for existing systems of gathering and analyzing weather data.
"We still need the raw data," the University of Pennsylvania's Paris Perdikaris said.
"We still need high quality data coming from physics-based simulation models that have been in place all these years."

In ancient teeth, clues of human evolution — and perhaps a new species
A close examination of 13 teeth discovered in the Ledi-Geraru research area, ranging from 2.6 million to 2.8 million years old, adds new fragments of evidence to the increasingly complex story of human origins and potentially reveals an entirely new species, according to research published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Advertisement Human evolution has long been visualized as a simple linear timeline, a kind of evolutionary baton race in which one species evolves into another, from apes to modern humans. The new finds reinforced that human evolution was more of a tangled-up bush. Different species and different branches of the hominin family tree overlapped with one another in time and space. Three smaller teeth, the researchers report, were from the group that modern humans belong to, Homo, and dated to 2.6 million and 2.8 million years ago. They were found at Ledi-Geraru in 2015 and 2018. The larger teeth were relatives of Lucy — an Australopithecus whose famed fossil find in Ethiopia 50 years ago changed the modern understanding of human origins. Already, outside researchers are debating next steps and whether they agree that the teeth found by Reed's team represent a new species of Australopithecus. The study was supported by the National Science Foundation. Because of the uncertainties around federal funding, Reed isn't yet sure if the next year of grant funding will come through. Advertisement 'We don't have all the pieces of the puzzle,' Reed said. 'What's exciting to us is you want more pieces of the puzzle to put this [story] together.' For years, paleoanthropologists have been piecing together evidence of a diverse world of hominins — the group that includes modern humans and our close ancestors. In Kenya, 1.5 million-year-old preserved footprints show that Homo erectus and another branch of the hominin family tree, Paranthropus boisei, walked along the shores of a lake within hours or days of each other. In and around a cave in South Africa, fossils reveal that Homo erectus, Australopithecus sediba, and Paranthropus robustus coexisted 2 million years ago. Now, in East Africa at sites within the Ledi-Geraru research area, a collection of ancient teeth show Homo and Australopithecus coexisting in yet another spot. But would they have interacted with one another? Would they have interbred? John Hawks, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison who was not involved in the work, said the find is exciting because it opens a window into a critical and mysterious period of human evolution between 2.5 million and 3 million years ago. He said he's eager to see the work published, but noted that such finds raise as many questions as they answer. 'The kinds of evidence that Ledi-Geraru is generating is evidence spanning hundreds of thousands of years of time, and potentially hundreds of square kilometers of space,' Hawks said. 'When several things are reported together like this, that creates a challenge of interpreting what that evidence together tells you.' Advertisement Clément Zanolli, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Bordeaux, said in an email that he was not yet convinced that the teeth are a new species of Australopithecus and would be cautious about attributing the smaller teeth traced to Homo. Newer techniques that use CT scanning allow scientists to study the internal structure of teeth and could build a stronger case. He said the finds would represent some of the oldest remains of Homo and the youngest specimens of Australopithecus in East Africa. 'These new findings are thus adding more pieces to the puzzle, but they are not decisive to understand human evolution,' Zanolli said. When the famous Lucy fossil was discovered a half-century ago, she was popularized as a 'missing link' between apes and humans. Human evolution looked simpler then. Today, the tree of human evolution is full of species that may have been direct ancestors, distant cousins, or side branches that died off. If anything, the science of human evolution has become a deeper mystery, as it has become clear that there were once lots of hominins walking around the planet, sometimes interacting with one another. As hallmarks of human innovation — such as using stone tools and butchering meat — have been shown to have been shared with hominin ancestors, the question of how and why humans alone succeeded has become more mysterious. Zeray Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist and professor at the University of Chicago, said he thinks it's possible the Australopithecus teeth described in the paper aren't a new species, but they could be evidence that Lucy's species persisted. Australopithecus afarensis was previously thought to have vanished around 2.95 million years ago from East Africa. Advertisement One model for how to understand human evolution is a concept called 'budding cladogenesis.' In this model, species don't progressively change into the next species and vanish. They give rise to different species at different times and in different places, and the ancestors may stick around and live alongside them. Lucy's species could have been one such long-lived species, and the teeth are one new piece of evidence to consider. 'The material is … highly fragmentary, but it does have important information in regard to a time period which is really critical,' Alemseged said. 'It really allows us to think about the complex question of how evolution has happened.'

Rising seas could put Easter Island's moai at risk by 2080, study warns
By the end of the century, rising sea levels could push powerful seasonal waves into Easter Island's 15 iconic moai statues, according to a new study published in the Journal of Cultural Heritage. About 50 other cultural sites in the area are also at risk from flooding. 'Sea level rise is real,' said Noah Paoa, lead author of the study and a doctoral student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. 'It's not a distant threat.' Paoa, who is from Easter Island — known to its Indigenous people as Rapa Nui — and his colleagues built a high-resolution 'digital twin' of the island's eastern coastline and ran computer models to simulate future wave impacts under various sea level rise scenarios. They then overlaid the results with maps of cultural sites to pinpoint which places could be inundated in the coming decades. The findings show waves could reach Ahu Tongariki, the largest ceremonial platform on the island, as early as 2080. The site, home to the 15 towering moai, draws tens of thousands of visitors each year and is a cornerstone of the island's tourism economy. Beyond its economic value, the ahu is deeply woven into Rapa Nui's cultural identity. It lies within Rapa Nui National Park, which encompasses much of the island and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The roughly 900 moai statues across the island were built by the Rapa Nui people between the 10th and 16th centuries to honor important ancestors and chiefs. The threat isn't unprecedented. In 1960, the largest earthquake ever recorded — a magnitude 9.5 off the coast of Chile — sent a tsunami surging across the Pacific. It struck Rapa Nui and swept the already-toppled moai further inland, which damaged some of their features. The monument was restored in the 1990s. While the study focuses on Rapa Nui, its conclusions echo a wider reality: cultural heritage sites worldwide are increasingly endangered by rising seas. A UNESCO report published last month found that about 50 World Heritage sites are highly exposed to coastal flooding. A UNESCO spokesperson said that relevant experts weren't immediately available for comment. Possible defenses for Ahu Tongariki range from armoring the coastline and building breakwaters to relocating the monuments. Paoa hopes that the findings will bring these conversations about now, rather than after irreversible damage.
