Australian World Cup captain retires from rugby after Lions tour
The 32-year-old, who travelled an unconventional path to the international stage, captained his country at the 2023 Rugby World Cup following an injury to Will Skelton.
The New South Wales Waratah missed the entirety of the 2024 campaign, but battled back to make his first appearance for Joe Schmidt against Fiji last month.
A concussion ruled him out of the first test against the Lions, but he returned for the second game in Melbourne for his 21st and final cap. A cut to his heel saw him miss the series finale.

Porecki made one cameo appearance for the Waratahs, back in 2015, before embarking on a five-year stint in England, playing with Saracens and London Irish.
He became a regular on his return to the Sydney-based team and, at the age of 29, Porecki made his Wallaby debut in a memorable victory over England in July 2022.
'To wear the Wallaby gold and Waratahs blue was a dream of mine as a boy growing up in Manly, and to be able to say I did both is something I'm incredibly proud of,' said Porecki in a statement.
'Rugby has given me so much to be thankful for and has been such a massive part of my life for so long, but it feels like the right time for me to turn the page and start a new chapter.
'There's a lot of people who have supported me in my journey, and to them I'll be forever grateful. I'm especially looking forward to spending more time with my wife, Shani, and kids, Luca, Charlie and Billie.
'I look forward to continuing to support the game away from the field in this next stage of my life.'
Head coach Schmidt paid tribute, saying: 'Porky is the ultimate professional and quiet achiever. He doesn't say a lot, preferring to get on with the job and to lead by example, and he's done that really well for the time that I've known him.
'On behalf of everyone within the team, we wish him and his family all the best in this next stage of their lives.'

Gareth Steenson has eyes only for World Cup role with Ireland
Gareth Steenson is blocking out all talk of what comes next for him in order to concentrate on his role with an Ireland women's senior team just weeks out from its first pool game at the 2025 Rugby World Cup. The former Ireland U21 and Exeter Chiefs out-half has been working with Scott Bemand's squad for a year now in a role as kicking coach, but the IRFU has since appointed a certain Jonathan Sexton to a similar brief. Sexton's contract with the Irish union kicked in on August 1st, at which point he was still in Australia working with Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions, but the Leinster legend is about to take over a large brief now that he is back on home soil. The IRFU has itself labelled it an 'expanded coaching role' from the part-time job he was doing last season with Sexton slated to work with the various men's and women's national grade teams up to senior levels. 'My future is I'm going to the World Cup so post-that it will be a matter of seeing where we are really,' said Steenson. 'When I moved back home a year ago I was very lucky to come in and work with the pathway, work with the sevens right across that kicking regime. 'I've been very lucky since the Six Nations, doing a little bit more with the backs, a bit more work in that area, looking to strike plays and stuff like that. I've been very fortunate to be part of the growth piece as well so it's been really exciting. I've loved it. 'All the focus has been really getting to this World Cup. Now we know that we are on the brink of it, it's very exciting.' Steenson has come to his current chapter via a long association with Exeter Chiefs with whom he won a second-tier Championship title and then two Premierships and a Champions Cup to boot. In all, he spent 13 years at Sandy Park. So successful was he at the English club that he was awarded the status of freeman of the city of Exeter a few years ago, following on from such luminaries as Chiefs boss and legend Rob Baxter and Admiral Horatio Nelson. Steenson has yet to graze any sheep on the common, or walk through the town with his sword, as the honour allows. Now back living on this side of the water, there is the carrot of returning to Sandy Park for a World Cup quarter-final next month. Advance from Pool C, either as winners or as runners-up, and Ireland will play their quarter-final at the stadium he called home for so long. Beat Japan and Spain in their first two games and they will make it that far regardless of events third day out against New Zealand. 'Well, it would be fantastic,' said Steenson. 'First of all, get to the quarter-final. We've got to respect what we've got to do. We've got to make sure we get those first couple of games. I know it's a cliché, but we've got to get those games. 'We've got to rock up well, play well this weekend (in the warm-up game) against Canada to give us confidence going into that competition. For me personally it would be fantastic to go back. I know that there is a lot of excitement already. 'I was back in Exeter three weeks ago and there's a real energy around the World Cup. To go back with the green jersey would be very exciting, even better if we win. Even so we've got a lot of work to do.' Steenson never got to play senior rugby for Ireland. He did go to two World Cups at what was then U21 level, and he was a key player in a team including Jamie Heaslip and Tomas O'Leary that reached the World Championship final at the grade in 2004. Coaching may not hit with the same punch as playing for most people, but the 41-year old is still thrilled at the chance to play a part for Ireland at a senior equivalent and on the back of a club career that delivered so much. 'For me, it just was the journey that I took, the journey I had at Exeter chiefs. Would I have changed it for one or two caps? Well, I was quite happy how I finished with a double but, yeah, I've always wanted to be involved.'

Ireland star has Lions teammates in stitches after brutal putdown
The British and Lions tours are famous for behind the scenes access to players and coaches. Quite often, some of the most memorable moments of Lions tours comes from the documentary episodes as players from four different nations come together as one squad. The 2025 Lions tour, under the leadership of Irish boss Andy Farrell, featured 11 Irish players including Leinster's Josh van der Flier. The 2022 world player of the year failed to make a test appearance but he has absolutely nailed Welsh captain Jac Morgan in the final part of the Ultimate Test' docu-series. That YouTube series has taken fans behind the curtain on the 2025 tour. As part of the final episode, viewers were able to see what was happening on the team coach to the stadium ahead of the last game. Reading out suggestions for the 'Barry Crocker' (shocker) award, Van der Flier read out Morgan's message. The Wales captain and Lions teammate's text read: "Alright Josh, boy? You should do yourself for Barry Crocker for being the only Leinster player in the original squad not to get named in the Test team!" As Van der Flier mouthed "Ooo", the players laughed in response, with Jamie George and James Lowe lapping up the sledging. However, the Irish flanker had a very sharp and witty retort. "That's very rich from a man who's won more games for the Lions than he has for club and country this year!" he hit back. There was a massive roar from the players, with Ellis Genge's fist flying in the air, exchanging a smile with buddy Morgan, who was sat right next to Van der Flier. However, this wasn't the only bit of banter dished out by Morgan, who quipped via text: "Alright Josh, boy? Any ideas for the Barry Crocker? I was thinking we do Bundee Aki for being 37 years old and his highest academic achievement is the World Rugby Anti-Doping module." The Lions wrapped up the series against Australia after the second Test, winning with a game to spare for the first time since 1997 against South Africa. The docu-series has given fans a number of other highlights and insights. Ireland's Dan Sheehan revealed that he has struck up a surprising bromance with England's Ellis Genge, with the Leinster man admitting he was surprised to learn that the prop was 'not a d******d'.
