Grizzlies tab Tuomas Iisalo as head coach
May 2 - The Memphis Grizzlies made Tuomas Iisalo's stay behind the bench a permanent one by naming him the Grizzlies' head coach on Friday.
"I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies going forward," general manager Zach Kleiman said in a statement. "Tuomas' teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both ends of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis."
The Grizzlies fired head coach Taylor Jenkins on March 28 despite the club's 44-29 record at the time and named Iisalo interim head coach.
Under Iisalo, the Grizzlies went 4-5, finishing 48-34 in the regular season and making the playoffs via the play-in tournament before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.
Iisalo, 42, joined the Grizzlies as an assistant under Jenkins ahead of this past season. He was coming off a stint as the head coach of Paris Basketball in 2024, when he was named EuroCup Coach of the Year in his native Finland.
The hire makes him the first NBA coach born in Finland.
Iisalo, who had a 14-year professional playing career in Finland, has big shoes to fill. Jenkins, 40, is the winningest coach in Grizzlies' franchise history with a 250-214 record with three playoff appearances since being hired in June 2019.

Report: Grizzlies C Zach Edey to undergo ankle surgery
June 7 - Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey is expected to miss some time at the start of the 2025-26 season after undergoing surgery for a sprained ankle, ESPN reported Saturday. After a solid rookie season, Edey was injured in an offseason workout earlier this week. "After consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple specialists, we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him back to 100 percent with no limitations," Edey's agent Mark Bartelstein said, via ESPN. "He will make a full recovery and be back better than ever," The Grizzlies selected the 7-foot-4 center with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after a phenomenal college career at Purdue. He was named the Naismith College Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Ralph Sampson (1982-83). As a rookie, Edey proved to be a pivotal presence for the playoff-bound Grizzlies, averaging 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks across only 21.5 minutes per game. He started 55 games. In the first round of the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Edey was productive in Game 4, recording eight points, eight rebounds, and seven blocks. He was the first rookie ever to record those minimums in a playoff game while playing 33 minute or less. --Field Level Media

Tonight's rugby news as Wales star goes under the knife again and Welsh players turn up at camp early
Tonight's rugby news as Wales star goes under the knife again and Welsh players turn up at camp early The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Several Wales players attended an optional early training session ahead of their summer camp (Image: Gareth Everett/Huw Evans Agency ) These are your evening rugby headlines on Thursday, May 29. Wales star goes under the knife again Wales lock Dafydd Jenkins is set to go under the knife again and have surgery on a back injury, ruling him out of this summer's tour of Japan. The 22-year-old Exeter Chiefs star has opted to undergo the procedure next week in a bid to get himself ready for the start of next season, having made his decision following talks with the Welsh Rugby Union and his club side. Jenkins missed the start of the Gallagher Premiership season after undergoing surgery on both his knee and shoulder, with his return to action for the Chiefs in December his first appearance since last summer's Wales tour of Australia. He has gone on to make 17 appearances for club and country over the course of the campaign, but will spent the summer recovering from another operation having decided to sort out his back issue now rather than leaving it. Issuing an update on Jenkins, Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter said: 'He's having surgery on a back issue; he's going to have that this week, and so he'll be out for a period. "It wasn't an operation he actually desperately had to have now, but it's one that he's needed to have. 'He's felt the degree it needed doing now rather than leaving," he added. "So it's one of those decisions that Daf, the WRU and ourselves just sat down and decided, let's get this done now." Welsh players turn up at camp early Wales' summer camp officially begins next week, but some players have taken the opportunity to hit training early by attending an optional extra conditioning session at their Vale Resort base. The likes of Taulupe Faletau, Elliot Dee, Rhodri Williams, Alex Mann and Cam Winnett were seen being put through their paces in various drills, with the Welsh Rugby Union sharing photos from the session on their social media pages. Also in attendance was Dragons tighthead Chris Coleman, who earned his first senior international call-up for this summer's tour of Japan after impressing scrum guru Adam Jones. Led by interim head coach Matt Sherratt, Wales will take on Japan in two matches in July as they look to end their miserable run of 17 straight Test match defeats. Star banned after Pollock incident Bordeaux prop Jefferson Poirot has been suspended for two weeks after clashing with Northampton Saints star Henry Pollock at the end of the Champions Cup final in Cardiff last weekend. The 32-year-old - who helped his side to a 28-20 win to claim the trophy - was alleged to have grabbed the England international by the throat when several players came together in an incident after the final whistle. After the match, Saints' director of rugby Phil Dowson claimed the alleged act was "uncalled for and out of order", and Poirot has now had his fate confirmed by an independent disciplinary committee. The loosehead accepted that he had committed an act of foul play which deserved a red card, with the panel determining that he had acted "against the spirit of good sportsmanship". While four weeks was selected as the appropriate entry point for the sanction, his suspension was halved to two weeks due to his guilty plea, cooperation and good disciplinary record. An EPCR statement read: "Taking into account the player's guilty plea, his good disciplinary record and his full co-operation with the disciplinary process, the Committee decided to reduce the sanction by the maximum of 50% before imposing a two-week suspension." Poirot will now miss Bordeaux's final two games of the Top 14 regular season against Toulon and Vannes, but will be available to return for the play-offs. Star returns after tumour diagnosis By PA Sport Staff Emma Wassell has been included in Scotland's Women's Rugby World Cup training squad after recovering from a benign tumour in her chest. The 30-year-old, who has 67 caps, has not been involved in the national set-up since last year. Scotland head coach Bryan Easson has picked an extended 38-player squad as he begins preparations for the tournament, which takes place in England in August. Easson has included four uncapped players – Aila Ronald, Hannah Ramsay, Hannah Walker and Meg Varley – all of whom trained with the squad through the Guinness Women's Six Nations. Easson said: 'We've named a strong, competitive group that blends hard-earned experience with exciting young talent. Article continues below 'I was particularly pleased with how our debutants and uncapped players performed during the Guinness Women's Six Nations – both in training and in matches – and this window gives them a chance to step up and show us more. 'It's also fantastic to welcome back Emma Wassell, Coreen Grant, Hollie Cunningham, and Meg Varley, all of whom have worked hard to return from injury and are now fit and available for selection. Their return adds even greater strength and competition to the squad.' Scotland kick off their campaign against Wales at Salford Community Stadium on August 23 and also face Fiji and Canada in the pool stage.

David Hughes a perfect fit for Newport County
The Exiles are preparing for a new era after Hughes left his role as Manchester United Under-21s coach to become manager at Rodney Parade. The 47-year-old leads a new-look management team with Wayne Hatswell returning as his right-hand man and Lee Kendall, the Newport-born son of club great Mark, joining as goalkeeping coach. Hughes takes over a side that finished in the last safe position in League Two, albeit with a comfortable seven-point lead over relegated Carlisle. Nelson Jardim left the club once he had retained Football League status but the Exiles had a disappointing campaign after a summer of big change in 2024. 'I don't think we saw the best of the squad last year. We shifted between playing styles and lacked consistency – something that young players really need,' said former Swansea owner Jenkins, whose takeover of County was rubber-stamped in January, 2024. 'A number of those players are still with us and will benefit greatly from the new coaching approach. If we add four or five experienced players in key areas, we'll be in a much stronger position.' ADDITIONS: County need to add some experience, owner Huw Jenkins has admitted (Image: Kian Abdullah/Huw Evans Agency) Jenkins led the recruitment drive last summer and is working with the new management team plus head of football operations Chris Finn, who has been at the club since the Graham Coughlan era. 'Ultimately, I make sure the financial side aligns with the club's goals, but recruitment decisions will be a collaborative effort,' said the owner. County are waiting for responses after making offers to the experienced quartet of goalkeeper Nick Townsend, centre-back James Clarke, full-back/midfielder Shane McLoughlin and midfielder Aaron Wildig. 'We've made offers, and we're waiting on responses. David is fully across all of it,' said Jenkins. 'There may still be changes — players assessing their role under the new regime – but we know we need four or five experienced signings in vital areas. 'David's contacts, and ours at clubs like Cardiff, Swansea, and Bristol [City], will hopefully help bring in a few loan players or squad additions.' Jenkins outlined his reasons for picking Hughes in an interview with the club. BOSS: New County manager David Hughes (Image: Newport County AFC) 'We've brought in a team with the right balance of experience and energy,' said the owner. 'The goal is to offer more excitement, more entertainment, and to restore pride in the team. 'After last season, it felt it was important to bring a different energy into the club. A new coaching team working together is key.' Hughes has never been a boss at EFL level – although the return of Hatswell does provide reassurance – but Jenkins is not bothered by that inexperience. 'Newport County is about giving people a platform. David is at the right stage of his career to step up, and after many discussions, it was clear he was the right fit. 'Importantly, his knowledge of our current squad is excellent, which puts us in a strong position to build.' County stayed away from the relegation scrap under Jardim, who worked with Jenkins at Swansea, but dropped down the table after finishing the campaign on a nine-game winless run. The Exiles went agonisingly close to promotion twice under Michael Flynn, were in the mix in the first season under James Rowberry and in the race for the play-offs until the wheels came off in the 2023/24 run-in under Graham Coughlan. The chairman wants to slowly build back towards being contenders for League One. 'The aim is to be in the top half, looking up, not down. We're not under any illusions, this takes time, but the changes we're making now are all designed to push the club forward,' he said.
