Some Of Our Favorite Hidden Indie Gems Are In The Big Steam Sale

Yahoo2 days ago
The Steam summer sale is an annual opportunity to add vast numbers to the teetering pile of games you'll get around to playing someday. With bonkers 90-percent-off deals, you can grab recent big-name games for under $5, all of which you'll definitely remember to load up someday. But it's not just the AAA blockbusters that are cheap right now; the sale also includes fantastic unknown indie games at far less risky prices.
Buying an unknown game, or one that's barely had any reviews, is fraught. Of course, for such games, that's a self-perpetuating problem—no giant buzz means no early sales, and no early sales fails to encourage others to take a chance. Fortunately, there are wonderful sites out there that root through the squillions of games to help you find the good stuff, like IndieGamesand Alpha Beta Gamer, and YouTube channels like SplatterCatGaming. (And, if I may, my own Buried Treasure.) So there's no better time than now to look through their recommendations, and then see if those games are cheaper in the Steam sale.
But, to make life even easier for you, I've gone back through some of my favorite hidden indie treasures of recent times—games that are completely brilliant but mostly unknown—to see which are discounted right now. Read on for a few suggestions of games you might otherwise entirely miss, now at even lower prices.
In an already fantastic year for point-and-click adventures, The Beekeeper's Picnic really stands out. This gorgeous exploration of the post-war relationship between Holmes and Watson, now living in retirement, is touching, smart, and stunningly written and acted. We wrote more about it here.

A super-smart, super-difficult puzzle game in which you play a ghost-like creature who is apparently driven to crush squids. You do this, as is so often the case, by pushing blocks onto them. But Ligo gets unique when you play as two or more of the main character at once, each moving in tandem and, upon coming into contact, globbing together to form a longer (or taller, or more right-angled) creature. It's properly tough stuff, presented very beautifully.

Imagine playing No Man's Sky through the lo-fi worlds of Ed Key's Proteus. That's the slightly-overselling-it pitch I have for Miro, a game made by one person with huge ambitions. This is such a lovely example of where indie gaming can be utterly different from big-name-publisher games, taking big swings without necessarily being able to connect them all, set in scratchy, experimental weirdness. We wrote lots more about it here.

Imagine if you took all of the old-school Zelda games, smooshed them up in a blender, put the results in a centrifuge, and then titrated the results into a single drop. You'd be mad. Don't do that. You can't even blend digital concepts. But Master Key does make me wonder.
This is a stunning piece of game design, a progressively unlocking RPG delivered in black-and-white, with no dialogue (people communicate in pictograms), that'll tickle all the places A Link To The Past can. We reviewed it here.

City building games have become just incredibly complicated in recent years, letting you control everything but the color of the gum on the sidewalk, but sometimes it's pleasant to hark back to those older times when things were somewhat simpler. Dawnfolk does that with its tile-based town creation, but then adds in a whole lot more with its puzzle-like goals, increasingly involved challenges, and the gorgeous feature whereby teeny events take place within the individual tiles. We wrote much more coherently about it here.

We are so very blessed with great puzzle games. (I'm currently hooked on Nurikabe World.) But every now and then there's something that's extra special. Polimines is one such game, a logic puzzle game that is so perfectly delivered as to be sublime. That first game joined the ranks of Hexcells with its elegance of design, and now this far more involved, complicated, and fantastic sequel, Polimines 2, surpasses it. I'd explain the conceit to you, but your eyes would glaze over at my attempts, so just watch the video above to get it.
Both games are bundled together at the best price I've ever seen for this.
Sale Price: $5.61 (58% off)

If you're old enough to remember Hexen and Heretic, then sit down, you look tired. And while you're here, play Wizordum. If, on the other hand, you're not over a thousand years old, then oh boy, do I have something fantastic to introduce you to. It's this game called Wizordum, based on some old games you won't have heard of.
This is a spectacular FPS in which you mix melee and ranged attacks with your sword-and-spells character. It's also an old-school boomer shooter that's not about frantic speed. Instead this is much more about discovering secrets, finding bonus areas stacked with ammo, and methodically solving vast level-sized puzzles to find keys and open doors. It's bloody marvelous.

Owner of viral $1.3M Indianapolis home for sale talks listing, trolls and his unique style

When you sell your home, a private space becomes public as strangers see inside every corner, both online and in person. Indianapolis artist Adam Stoner has experienced that more than most, as his listing has gone viral with more than 100,000 views on Zillow and countless posts and comments online. And when it comes to real estate and art, as they say, everyone's a critic. "What was once my creative environment is now everyone else's experience," Stoner said. "So until we sell, it's more like a hotel now, which I didn't expect." Stoner, owner of the Salt House Tattoo in Franklin and a media personality with a popular YouTube show and podcast, has handled the online criticism with grace and humor. Stoner discussed the viral listing on his YouTube show, explaining his love for the home and his understanding that everyone's style is unique while adding his signature brand of humor. He laughingly read several of the negative comments, like "100 percent a magician lived here," before taking his viewers on an MTV Cribs-style tour of the home to show what makes it perfect for him and, hopefully, a buyer. "Honestly, it's not been fun," Stoner told IndyStar of the negative online comments. "I think that's why I've been having so much fun with it online. People that are rude don't expect me to joke back." We talked to Stoner about what inspired his vision for the home, listed for $1.399M, with gleaming black and white epoxy floors, Chinese temple doors circa the 1500s and more. "I like to make every environment I have an environment that inspires me," he said. "Being a tattoo artist, I need to feel creative in every corner of my life in order to give my clients my best. My shop, the 'Salt House,' is a Victorian dark history private tattoo studio complete with gold and old. So when I come home, I want the silver side of the coin." The massive home has more than 8,500 sq ft, 5 bedrooms, 5 1/2 baths, a resort-style pool, a recording studio and a 9-seat movie theatre. With all that space, we asked Stoner about his favorite feature. "Everyone that comes over loves the movie theater. Hands down for me, my recording studio," he said. "That's where I live most of the time, making music, documentaries, my show, designing tattoos and more." While Stoner waits for the home to sell, the main takeaway seems to be to ignore the noise and do what makes you happy, especially when it comes to your own home. "Decorating the way we did allowed us to be on vacation every day."

Rare flower that smells like rotten flesh to bloom in S.F. Spare your nose and watch the livestream

The San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers has launched a livestream of one of its famously stinky corpse flowers, allowing fans to watch the rare bloom without enduring its pungent smell. The plant, also known as titan arum or the amorphophallus titanum, is expected to unfurl within a week, according to an Instagram post from the historic Golden Gate Park greenhouse, which houses a total of five of the plants. Scientists have nicknamed this particular one Chanel. Chanel's livestream began Tuesday, July 1, on the Gardens of Golden Gate Park YouTube channel. It shows a birdseye view of the plant, which has been roped off, as visitors cycle through the space. Those who want to get a closer look, or take a whiff of the phallic-shaped plant once it blooms, can still visit the Conservatory of Flowers in person between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Thursdays through Tuesdays. Titan arum is native to the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and is considered endangered by the International Union of the Conservation of Nature. It spends years cycling through dormancy and growth phases, during which it produces a giant leaf that can reach up to 15 feet tall. This process can occur multiple times over several years before the plant accumulates enough energy to bloom. Its bloom only lasts for about 24 to 48 hours During the first evening, its putrid odor, which has been compared to the smell of rotten flesh, releases to attract pollinators such as carrion flies and beetles. After the event, it can take between three to five years for the plant to bloom again. The Conservatory confirmed on Friday, June 27 that Chanel will bloom soon, distinguishable by the plant's tall central spike, called a spadix, poking out through its ruffly spathe leaves. Chanel last bloomed in 2022. Scarlet, another one of the Conservatory of Flowers' titan arums, bloomed in 2023, while the California Academy of Sciences ' corpse flower bloomed last year. Both were livestreamed.

YouTube stars complete hole-in-one challenge after 57-hour livestream on Calgary golf hole

A days-long stunt by viral YouTube pranksters the Nelk Boys had shut down part of a Calgary golf course for more than 50 hours, as the group pursued a single goal: to sink a hole-in-one. Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, the group posted to social media that Nelk Boys co-founder Kyle Forgeard got a hole-in-one after 57 hours on livestream. The challenge, livestreamed to tens of thousands of viewers on had members of the Nelk team repeatedly attempting a 155-yard (142-metre) shot at Heritage Pointe Golf Course. As of Wednesday afternoon, the stream had a steady viewership of more than 30,000. Despite a heatwave pushing temperatures to 30 C this week, Forgeard said they weren't going anywhere until the goal was completed. 'We're not leaving until we get a hole in one,' Forgeard told a Postmedia reporter between swings on Wednesday, cracking open a can of his Happy Dad hard seltzer. Their main YouTube channel has nearly 8.5 million subscribers with a combined total of about 1.78 billion views. Forgeard also hosts the Full Send Podcast, which boasts more than 2 million YouTube subscribers and a guest list that includes Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Mike Tyson and Shaquille O'Neal The challenge has 18 members of the Nelk Boys crew camped out near the tee box, sleeping in tents and an RV parked on site. 'Usually I get . . . penthouses and the hotels, but it's the opposite this time,' Forgeard said. 'I woke up at 7 a.m. today and I felt like I was in a Russian sauna — and I've actually been in a Russian sauna.' The hole-in-one challenge took place on a private filming set at Heritage Pointe Golf Club and was not open to the public. The team arrived in Calgary last Friday amid a hailstorm, days before a heat warning came into effect in the city. But Forgeard, now based in Miami, isn't complaining. 'It's nice weather,' he said. 'Canada in the summer? Can't beat it.' Forgeard said the challenge came together after connecting with Heritage Pointe Golf Club owner Barry Ehlert. 'I was like, if there's one guy that's gonna hook us up and let us do this at his course . . . (it's Barry),' he said. 'He was instantly down.' David Robinson, vice-president of operations at Heritage Pointe, said the stunt hasn't disrupted regular operations at the course and has been a positive experience for staff. 'This is definitely the first time we've seen something like this,' Robinson said. 'The guys have been great to work with and awesome to our staff. 'It has been a fun experience,' he added. Forgeard, who was born and raised in Mississauga, Ont., fondly recalled his Canadian upbringing, playing road hockey 'every day' after school. 'I feel like there's literally no better place to grow up,' he said. 'I'm really proud to be from Canada.' He also praised the staff at Heritage Pointe: 'The staff here has been so great — they're bringing us food, anything we need.' Asked how long they prepared to stay, Forgeard paused. 'That's a good question,' he said. 'I don't know — but we can't leave until we make a hole in one. There's no way.' The team expressed interest in visiting the Calgary Stampede, which officially kicks off on Friday. 'I loved it (last year),' Forgeard said. 'If we make the hole in one on Friday, obviously we're rolling into the Stampede.'
