Drivers stressed about weekend Mass Pike closures, traffic delays
"I think I'll cry," said Catherine Carney, a Logan Express bus driver who will be on the job this weekend driving her route from Framingham and will have few options. "Personally, I will probably just follow the Pike because if we go through the roads out in the towns, they're going to be just as swamped," Carney said.
Mass Pike shutdown begins Friday night
That will be the word this weekend as the shutdown begins 9:00 p.m. Friday and ends 5:00 a.m. Monday near the I-95 interchange.
It will be in Fernando Pereira's direction to work in Boston. "I think they have to figure out how to make this work better because it's a lot of stress in this situation," Pereira said.
The plan is to close a two-mile stretch leaving only one lane in each direction on the eastbound side of the Mass Pike. The advice is to avoid the area or plan ahead for alternate routes into the city such as Route 2.
Derek Wheeler needs to get his son to a tournament soccer game. "Unfortunately we're going to have to take Route 9 as far as we can and wind our way through Cambridge and Watertown essentially," Wheeler said.
Mike Mills is boarding a bus to the airport hours early just in case. "I don't want to miss my flight," Mills said. "I think that's the thing I'm most stressed about."
Impact to rail service
Shuttle buses will also replace Commuter Rail service on the Worcester Line trains between Framingham and South Station. On Amtrak, the Boston to Chicago route is impacted and buses will run between Albany, New York and Boston.
MassDOT says it chose weekends it hopes will have the most minimal impact because the shutdown will occur again the weekend of June 20. "First and foremost, leave yourself a lot of extra time. Use the tools that are out there," said MassDOT highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver.

Manatee spotted on Cape Cod for first time in nearly a decade
A manatee has been spotted on Cape Cod for the first time since 2016. It was first seen in Mashpee on July 26, according to MassWildlife protected species program manager Erin Burke. It was seen again on July 29 in Mattapoisett, where it briefly ended up stranded on the tidal flats before people helped get it back into the water. MassWildlife has been in contact with the International Fund for Animal Welfare about potentially rescuing the manatee. Burke said water temperatures will soon dip below what a manatee can handle. "The reason they're concerned is because the animal doesn't look well, it looks a little thin," Burke said. Manatees typically make their home in the warm waters off Florida and the Gulf Coast and will migrate further north in the summer. It's uncommon, but not unheard of, for manatees to make their way up to New England, Burke said. A pregnant manatee was rescued on Cape Cod in 2016 as the water turned colder and then released in Florida. In 2023, a manatee was spotted in Quonochontaug Pond in Charlestown, Rhode Island and was later found dead. The IFAW said only four manatee sightings have been documented in Massachusetts in the last 17 years. It is working with federal wildlife officials to monitor the manatee. "We ask that anyone who encounters this manatee or any other marine mammal maintains a safe and respectful distance-at least 150 feet. Do not attempt to feed, touch, or closely approach the animal," the organization said in a statement. "These actions can be harmful to both the animal and the public, and in some cases are a violation of federal law." Anyone who sees the manatee in distress is urged to call the IFAW's stranding hotline at 508-743-9548.

SINGAPORE, Aug 6 — Travellers from Singapore who are heading to Malaysia over the upcoming National Day weekend should brace for heavy traffic and longer immigration clearance times at land checkpoints, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said yesterday, according to CNA. From August 8 to 10 — coinciding with the National Day public holiday on Saturday, August 9 — congestion is expected at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. ICA urged travellers to check real-time traffic updates before starting their journey, CNA reported. For those who must travel during peak periods, ICA suggested using cross-border bus services to avoid lengthy jams. 'We seek travellers' understanding to cooperate with ICA officers, observe traffic rules and maintain lane discipline,' the authority said, warning it would take action against those who ignore instructions, CNA wrote. The advisory follows record-breaking traffic volumes in June. During the school holidays, an average of more than 525,000 travellers crossed daily via the two land checkpoints — nearly 10 per cent more than in the same period last year. On June 20, a new single-day high of 578,000 crossings was recorded, surpassing the previous peak of over 562,000 set last December, CNA noted. According to ICA, car travellers departing during peak hours in June faced waits of up to three hours for immigration clearance, largely due to traffic tailbacks from the Malaysian side. With the upcoming long weekend likely to draw similar or heavier traffic, ICA's advice is clear: plan ahead, consider alternative transport, and be prepared for delays.
