DAP orders nationwide police reports, accuses Umno Youth of scaring off local traders and subverting law with Kepala Batas protest

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Threads WhatsApp Telegram KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The DAP today condemned Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh for leading a march and demonstration in front of a hardware shop in Kepala Batas yesterday, despite police warnings against holding gatherings. In a statement, the party said the act amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader, who had already apologised over the flag incident and was still under investigation. 'Akmal's decision to disregard police warnings is also a direct challenge to the rule of law and a disruption of public order, causing unease among traders in the surrounding area and forcing them to close their businesses earlier than usual,' said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook. 'Acts like this go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of Malaysia's multiracial society. Appropriate punishment must be meted out for such extreme behaviour.' DAP Socialist Youth wings nationwide have since been instructed to lodge police reports under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief. Loke said reports would also be made under Section 507B of the Penal Code for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such effects. 'I reiterate that the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of national sovereignty, must be flown correctly and with full respect. However, threats, bullying and inciting tension are not the way to resolve this matter,' Loke added. Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam here today over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. PDRM said the move was to safeguard the safety of the local community and maintain public order, after both Umno Youth and DAP planned to host events on the matter. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty. — Malay Mail

‘Crazy': Farhash Wafa Salvador denies involvement in Rafizi son attack amid rumours

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Entrepreneur Datuk Seri Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak has reportedly denied today rumours linking him to the attack on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son. Malaysiakini reported the former political secretary of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim replying with a one-word response about the allegations: 'Crazy.' This comes after former economy minister Rafizi said two male suspects on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing helmets had tailed his wife's car before grabbing his son and stabbing him with a syringe. Yesterday, Rafizi said that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. He said in his opinion this was a strategy to ensure that he drops the matter altogether. Rafizi said police were investigating the possible link between the attack and his work, which he believes is connected. He explained that his son will need repeated blood tests over six months to rule out drugs, poison, or viral infections. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar has since said the police have tightened security measures for Rafizi following the attack. Formerly Perak PKR chief, Farhash lost the contest for Gombak PKR division chief in 2022 to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Farhash is or had been a director and/or shareholder in at least ten private companies including MMAG Holdings Bhd, HeiTech Padu Bhd, 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd, Apex Equity Holdings Bhd, Berjaya Construction Bhd, and Pacific Samudera Sdn Bhd.

UTeM Strengthening Aerospace TVET To Produce More Competent Graduates

MELAKA, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) is working to strengthen the Aerospace Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector to produce more competent graduates for the job market. Its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin, said the initiative is being carried out with the support of the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia (NAICO Malaysia), which has paved the way for strategic collaborations with major industry players. She said the partnership represents a significant step forward in ensuring that UTeM remains dynamic and a leading reference point in high-tech TVET, particularly in aerospace. "At the global level, UTeM is also collaborating with the Moscow Aviation Institute in Russia, and we are actively developing an Aerospace TVET curriculum that is relevant, dynamic, and aligned with the current demands of the global job market. 'In addition, we are identifying specific competency certifications that will equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to fully meet industry requirements," she said in a statement today. She said the initiative aims to ensure that every UTeM Aerospace TVET graduate possesses recognised professional qualifications and technical competencies, thereby enhancing their marketability both nationally and internationally. The Aerospace TVET programme will be offered entirely at the Faculty of Mechanical Technology and Engineering (FTKM) and the Faculty of Industrial and Manufacturing Technology and Engineering (FTKIP). Massila said UTeM's efforts to strengthen the Aerospace TVET field are in line with the government's aspiration to position Malaysia as a major aerospace hub in Southeast Asia, supported by a highly skilled workforce and a strong, competitive industrial ecosystem. Meanwhile, NAICO Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Prof Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah said the corporation is committed to fully supporting UTeM's efforts to develop an Aerospace TVET curriculum that meets industry standards and requirements.
