Jay Sigel, American amateur golf great, dead at 81
Jay Sigel, the man widely regarded as one of the greatest American amateur golfers, died of pancreatic cancer, the U.S. Golf Association announced on Sunday.
Sigel died on Saturday at the age of 81.
The amateur golfer had two U.S. Amateur titles and three U.S. Mid-Amateur victories to his name, while also participating in nine Walker Cup matches and being named captain twice.

The Bryn Mawr, Pa. native captured 10 state amateurs and four state opens, while winning three times each at the Porter Cup, Sunnehanna Amateur and Northeast Amateur.

'He was a dear friend and somebody that we will remember forever, and take a lot of inspiration from,' USGA president-elect and chair of the Championship Committee Kevin Hammer said in an obituary. 'Best amateur since Bobby Jones hands down.
'Not only was his career as an amateur – and as a professional [on the PGA Tour Champions] — incredibly successful and legendary, but he [also] participated alongside all of the members [at Delray Dunes Golf & Country Club in Boynton Beach, Fla.] in team matches, supported the club, helped the juniors and just was inspirational at every level. His legacy extends far beyond his playing credentials, which are extraordinary.'

Sigel was also the low amateur at the Masters three times and once at the U.S. Open and the Open Championship.
He had planned to turn pro originally back when he competed for Wake Forest, but he injured his arm during his sophomore year in a freak accident in which his left hand went through a pane window and required 70 stitches.

The injury resulted in a nine-day stay at the hospital and led Sigel to reconsider his hopes of going pro, and he instead started an insurance business.
'I always thought things happen for a reason,' Sigel said. 'The hand injury was the best thing to happen to me.'
Sigel did turn pro later in life at the age of 50 and went on to win eight PGA Tour Champions events.

They agreed to terms on a deal to acquire veteran nose tackle Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The Jets are sending sixth-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027 to the Vikings, who are trading a 2027 seventh-rounder along with Phillips — pending the 29-year-old D-lineman's physical — according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams didn't announce the deal. Advertisement Article continues below this ad ESPN and NFL Network first reported the trade, which came a few hours after New York made another addition to its defensive line when it acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs and a seventh-rounder next year from Cleveland for a sixth-rounder. According to multiple reports, the Vikings also agreed to pay $3.7 million of Phillips' $7.4 million salary due this season. Phillips played the past three seasons for the Vikings after spending his first four with Buffalo. He was a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2018. Phillips has eight career sacks, five fumble recoveries and is regarded as a top run stuffer. The 6-foot-3, 307-pound Phillips started every game during his tenure with Minnesota, with 6 1/2 of his sacks and 17 quarterback hits during that time. He signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Vikings in 2022 and then was signed to a two-year extension in September. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. Advertisement Article continues below this ad The 6-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23) — where he was teammates with current Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner for one season. Phillips and Briggs join a D-line that's led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams and includes Micheal Clemons, Jay Tufele, Will McDonald and Rashad Weaver. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the additions of Phillips and Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. Before the trades Wednesday, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks praised his line and was excited about its potential. 'I preach all the time to the defense, everything that we do starts up front,' Wilks said. 'Those guys are going to be the cowbells of this defense and really try to spark and get us going.' Saints acquire second-year wide receiver Devaughn Vele from Broncos for a pair of draft picks
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are alleviating some of the crowding in their wide receiver room by sending second-year pro Devaughn Vele to the New Orleans Saints for a pair of draft picks. The Broncos will get a fourth-round selection in next year's draft and a seventh-rounder in 2027 in exchange for Vele, who caught 41 passes for 475 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie last season. Vele (6-foot-5 and 210 pounds) was a seventh-round selection by Denver out of Utah in 2024. He caught all eight passes thrown to him in last year's opener and two of his three TDs came against the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs. He also caught a half-dozen passes for 80 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12. Vele joins a receiver corps in New Orleans that also includes Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Brandin Cooks, Mason Tipton, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Dante Pettis. Led by Courtland Sutton, the Broncos have a deep wide receiving corps, which coach Sean Payton has said would provide some difficult decisions when it comes to paring the roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players next week. Reds place catcher Tyler Stephenson on injured list because of thumb injury
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson was placed on the injured list Wednesday because of a small fracture on the tip of his left thumb, an injury he initially sustained while catching a pitch from hard-throwing right-hander Hunter Greene last week. Stephenson, who is batting .226 nine homers and 36 RBIs in 72 games, aggravated the injury while catching Nick Lodolo's bullpen session Tuesday night before a against the Los Angeles Angels and was sent for X-rays, which revealed the fracture. 'You can play as tolerated, but the catching part, that makes it a little more difficult,' manager Terry Francona said. '(His recovery) would be quicker if he wasn't a catcher." Stephenson will be evaluated by a hand specialist Thursday during a off day in Phoenix. Jose Trevino will take over as the starting catcher, and Will Banfield was called up from Triple-A Louisville. ___
