Golf legend blames 'tragedy' for Jordan Spieth's staggering decline
Player, who is widely considered one of the greatest golfers in history, thought he saw a contemporary in Spieth went he burst onto the scene a decade ago. The South African believes the drop-off is due to bad coaching.
In 2015, Spieth became the second-youngest golfer to win The Masters after Tiger Woods. The Texan followed it up with a triumph at the US Open.
He's won one major since, the 2017 Open Championship, and struggled to keep up with the sport's elite.
Now, Player, 89, has blasted Spieth and his team for letting the golfing prodigy not live up to expectations.
'Jordan Spieth, I think, is the best golfer in the world, but in my opinion, he was taught the wrong thing. He was taught the wrong thing. And he just went downhill,' Player said to 'The Golf Supply'. 'If you had a man like Ben Hogan teaching Jordan Spieth, he would be the best in the world.'
'He's such a competitor, such a wonderful man. A wonderful guy for golf, the best short game, oh man, best course management, but, man, he just can't hit the ball, ya know? That is a tragedy.'
Player blasted the American state of golf as a whole, with a referendum likely coming next month with the Ryder Cup in New York.
The nine-time major champion, and nine-time Champions Tour major winner, specifically tore into those teachers in the United States not instructing the bowed wrist technique correctly.
The technique keeps the clubface path closed compared to the direction of your swing, leading to a more accurate shot for any non-putt.
'I would say in America today, the golf pros that are teaching know less about golf,' Player added.
Player then name-dropped another American golfer he has seen as having a massive drop-off: 'When's the last you heard of Dustin Johnson?'
Johnson last won a major in 2020, with the pandemic-era Masters, his last victory on the PGA Tour before moving to LIV Golf.
Spieth's last win on the PGA Tour came in 2022, at the RBC Heritage in a playoff over Patrick Cantlay. His best placement this season is two fourth-place finishes. The Texan's current form is subpar at 40th, 31st, and 38th in his last three tournaments.
To make matters worse, Spieth is not competing in this weekend's BMW Championship in Maryland due to finishing outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Player did not make a comment about Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, or Bryson DeChambeau, who are among the best golfers in the world and hail from America.
Scheffler in particular has shown a dominance on the links golf fans have not seen since Woods in his prime.
Player is no doubt one of the best to ever pick up a set of clubs, often regarded as one of the big three to popularize the sport on television alongside Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Phillies welcome back Aaron Nola in finale vs. Nats
August 17 - The Philadelphia Phillies expect to welcome back one of their star pitchers on Sunday, a day after they placed another on the injured list. Aaron Nola will make his long-awaited return to the rotation on as the Phillies vie for a split of their four-game series against the host Washington Nationals. Nola (1-7, 6.16 ERA) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his first start with Philadelphia since May 14. The right-hander went on the injured list two days later with a sprained right ankle, and then dealt with a stress fracture in his right rib cage. Nola fared well in his third rehab outing with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, striking out 11 batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y. "It felt good to get the pitch count up a little bit and get back in the sixth inning," Nola said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The arm feels great; the ankle feels good. I'm glad to be able to finally get back on the field and catch and throw normally. I'm just excited to get back on the mound again for these guys and give them a chance to win again." The National League East-leading Phillies would like that very much, given that they lost for the fourth time in five games with a 2-0 setback to Washington on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia was unable to solve Cade Cavalli, as the latter tossed seven scoreless innings to pocket his first win of his career. James Wood slapped a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to provide all the offense that Cavalli would need. Shortly after that defeat, the Phillies announced ace right-hander Zack Wheeler is headed to the 15-day injured list due to a blood clot in his right arm. There is no timetable for his return. "There's not a lot that we can say on it at this time," said Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations. "It could have been a much more trying situation than it is." As for Nola, he is one season removed from recording 14 wins -- his most since he erupted for 17 in 2018. Nola, 32, allowed two homers and five runs total on six hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 5-1 setback at Washington on March 30. He is 10-9 with a 3.75 ERA in 34 career appearances (all starts) versus the Nationals. Nola may not be the only returning member of the Phillies, as third baseman Alec Bohm also is expected to be recalled from Lehigh Valley. Bohm has been sidelined since July 19 with a rib fracture. Trea Turner recorded his second three-hit performance of the series on Saturday. The speedy Turner is 8-for-14 in the set. Washington left-hander Mitchell Parker (7-13, 5.55) will be tasked with keeping Turner in check when he starts Sunday's game. Parker, 25, got the better of Nola in that game on March 30. The former scattered seven hits and struck out five batters over 6 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win on that day. All told, Parker is 1-1 with a bloated 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings over two career encounters versus the Phillies. He hasn't fared well of late, going 0-3 with a 10.67 ERA in three starts this month. He allowed just two hits -- albeit with five runs -- in 5 1/3 innings in an 8-5 setback to the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday. "It still (stinks). It's still a loss," Parker said. "I gave up a couple runs and set them in motion to kind of run away with it." --Field Level Media

Furious Rassie Erasmus slams Springboks performance after Australia defeat: ‘We were really awful'
Rassie Erasmus pulled no punches as he laid into his South Africa side following their second half capitulation in the stunning 38-22 loss to Australia in their Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park. The Springboks were cruising as they led 22-0 inside the first quarter, but while Australia grew into the game and began to win the individual contests, the home side wilted in the second half as the visitors scored 38 unanswered points. "I can try to butter it up and bottle it up to sound cool and respectful. The effort was maybe there but the accuracy or precision wasn't," Erasmus told reporters. "It was a bad loss in a bad way. Not against a bad team, we just didn't have fight right until the end, and that's not what we want to give South Africa. "There was a stage where I felt our heads were dropping and shoulders were slumping, and that was part of the disappointment. We were really awful, and they were very good, but we made them better.' Australia dominated at the breakdown, an area that has troubled the Springboks this season as they try to move to a more expansive, running style of play, which makes for a looser contest on the floor. "We didn't scrum them and they beat us in the lineouts," Erasmus said. "In the first 25 minutes, I thought we were really good in the breakdown. After that, when Siya (Kolisi) got injured and Marco (van Staden) went for a (head-injury assessment), it slipped away. "They beat us in most departments. We as coaches got it terribly wrong and we must look firstly at ourselves." The two teams meet again in Cape Town on Saturday and Erasmus, who has already announced his side for the match to the players, says there may be a rethink. "We know from now until next Saturday we are going to take a lot of flak. We take the credit when we do well, now we must take the flak when we do badly. "We already picked next week's that will probably change. "We'll have to rethink it. They tactically outsmarted us and physically dominated us." Reuters

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami add to Galaxy's rough season
August 17 - Lionel Messi returned from injury Saturday night and finished with a goal and an assist to propel host Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba also scored to help Inter Miami (13-5-6, 45 points) bounce back following a 4-1 loss last Sunday against host Orlando City SC and secure a much-needed three points in the chase for the Supporter's Shield. Messi, who had missed Miami's previous three matches across all competitions with a thigh injury, did not start but entered the game at the start of the second half. With the match knotted 1-1 in the 84th minute, Messi took a ball at the top of the box and delivered one of his signature individual efforts to put Miami ahead for good. Messi juked past the Galaxy's Lucas Sanabria and dribbled past another defender before firing a shot on target from distance past Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Micovic. Five minutes later, another rush upfield ended with Messi delivering a beautiful back heel to Suarez, who knocked another ball home to secure the club's first league win since July 19. It was Suarez's first goal in run of play in his past nine matches across all competitions and sixth in league play this season. A rough campaign following an MLS Cup championship last year continued for the Galaxy (3-16-7, 16 points), who are winless in their past four league matches -- although LA will play Pachuca of Mexico in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday. Despite Messi's presence, the Galaxy gave themselves a chance to secure at least a point when Joseph Paintsil equalized the match in the 59th minute on his own brilliant individual effort. Paintsil dribbled past two defenders and ripped a shot that bounced off Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and into the net. But Messi answered in the clutch with his MLS-leading 19th goal. Despite outshooting LA 28-5 and 8-3 on shots on goal, Inter Miami didn't find the back of the net until Alba scored in the 43rd minute off a great through ball by Sergio Busquets. Suarez hit the post on a strong attempt early in the match, and Miami had a goal by Telasco Segovia disallowed after a review determined he was offside. --Field Level Media
