North West mother in court for allegedly pouring acid over daughter's (14) face
Potchefstroom Herald reports that the case was postponed until Tuesday for a formal bail application.
According to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, provincial police spokesperson, police initially received a call from the mother who informed the police that her 14-year-old daughter had poured acid on herself and was admitted to a local hospital.
Investigations by the Mmabatho Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit established that the mother arrived home at Majemantsho village in the early hours on April 22.
She then asked her daughter to accompany her to an outside room, where she allegedly poured acid over her face. She took the teenager to a local hospital.
'The arrest of the mother is not solace and will definitely not erase the pain and trauma that the child has been subjected to by a mother, who is supposed to be a guardian, provider and protector,' says acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng.
'This incident requires the active involvement and collective responsibility of government and civil society in dealing with the precipitating and predisposing causes of social fabric crimes against children, women, the elderly and vulnerable in society.
'No amount of punishment or sentence meted out to the suspect (mother), including medical care, will suffice. This innocent child is scarred for life physically, psychologically and emotionally,' he adds.

Police kill four suspects in Gauteng armed robbery ambush
Gauteng police shot and killed four suspected robbers in Randfontein on Tuesday after a gunfight with officers from the Tactical Response Team. The police intercepted the suspects after the Eastern Cape police's Crime Intelligence Unit shared information that the group was planning to rob a businessman in Randfontein. The businessman was reportedly en route to deposit a large sum of money at the bank. Officers from the Tactical Response Team spotted the suspects' vehicle travelling on Ventersdorp Road. Gauteng police deputy commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which carried four suspects. 'The suspects opened fire on our members, and the team returned fire. All four suspects were fatally wounded,' said Kekana. Police seized rifles and pistols at the scene. They also found traditional muti inside the suspects' car, including on the seats. Police noted that the vehicle had false number plates. A sticker on the petrol cap read: 'Prayer is the key.' Commenting on the failed robbery, Kekana said, 'Neither worked for them, not their muti nor the prayers. They were doing something they shouldn't have, and even the prayers ended up helping the police.' Video: 4 suspects gunned down in business robbery attempt in Randfontein
Video: 4 suspects gunned down in business robbery attempt in Randfontein Four suspects were killed during a shoot-out with police along Ventersdorp Road in Randridge Agricultural Holdings in Randfontein, Gauteng, today. Randfontein Herald reports that, according to acting provincial police commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana, police intercepted the suspects who were allegedly planning a business robbery, specifically targeting a businessperson in the Randfontein area. 'We received intelligence from the Eastern Cape that the suspects were planning to rob a business. We then deployed our tactical response team and anti-gang unit to intercept them. When police tried to stop them, they started shooting at the police officers. Police had no choice but to defend themselves,' he said. Police recovered multiple casings inside the suspect's vehicle, a rifle, magazines and two pistols. Kekana says they were driving a vehicle with a false number plate, with the correct ones found in the boot. He adds that it is a criminal group and police cannot rule out that they were involved in crimes in other regions. Kekana says criminals will face the full might of the law. 'Criminals are not allowed to think they can rule this country.' Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. Shocking viral schoolgirl bullying incident condemned
Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, has condemned the viral video depicting a schoolgirl being assaulted. The video, which has been widely circulated on social media platforms, shows the girl being humiliated and physically assaulted by boys from her school on a school bus. The assault continued even after she had disembarked. Letsike described the incident as 'appalling' and a stark reminder of the pervasive gender-based violence (GBV) within communities and schools. 'No child deserves to endure such brutality, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our schools are safe havens for learning and growth,' Letsike said. The Deputy Minister has called on the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to take swift and decisive action, including a full investigation into the incident, disciplinary measures against the perpetrators, and immediate enforcement of anti-bullying laws, as part of the Code of Conduct for all learners. She also urged the DBE to implement comprehensive prevention programmes to prevent both bullying and acts of GBV in schools. 'This incident should intensify a call to all stakeholders to take immediate action to protect our children and create safe and respectful school environments. We will work tirelessly with the Department of Basic Education, all stakeholders, including parents and educators,' Letsike said. Letsike emphasised the need for greater vigilance from adults, including parents and teachers, in identifying warning signs and addressing problems promptly. 'Learners must feel safe at school. Parents and other adults can help learners who suffer at the hands of bullies,' she said, adding that schools should be free from violence and GBV.
